I have the records of the whole range of censuses for this family (1841-1901), which of course has the 2 entries for 1851. As the towns of Blackburn and Preston are next to each other, I have presumed that they are the same. I have not come across any other Peter and Orlando Heathcote together in the Lancashire area.

Thanks once again Stephen, you really have been a big help. I shall carry on with my research but I have found that via David Maskrey I have traced back and his great great grandmother was Lydia Wigley who married William Maskery. Her brother Thomas we have always thought was the father of George Roe Wigley my great great great great grandfather and grandfather of ELiza Wigley. We have never been able to prove this but maybe this helps with the Maskery-Wigley link. George married Frances Beck and again I have struggled to find records for her, she married George in Ashbourne in 1787.
Thanks once again for all you help if you do find anything else whilst searching I would love to hear it.
Helen.

Helen,

So far I can’t shed any light on Thomas and Mary Smith. As far as know William senior did not have a sister Mary: his siblings were John, Anne, Sarah and Samuel. I wondered whether Sarah Smith might have been William junior’s sister Sarah, but find she married Samuel Copestake.
I have found a christening record for Charles Maskery, 17 August 1834 at St Oswald’s Ashbourne, son of James and Eliza Maskery. James, not David; but the mother’s name Eliza seems too much of a coincidence. Either James or David is a mistranscription, or maybe he went under both names; but it looks like Charles Maskery is a half-brother to Sarah and Fanny Heathcote. As you say, in 1841, he is with his grandfather in Marple. I can’t find him in the 1851 census, but did notice in searching that there were quite a few Maskerys in Shirley. I had thought it was a Belper-Wirksworth surname.
Quite a mystery!

Stephen
Re: William Heathcote and from Ashbourne Derbyshire

Hi Stephen,
I haven't really traced the Heathcote family back far but have been trying to. I have been trying to find out what happened to William Heathcote Jnr after Eliza died around 1848 ish. I have a letter dated 1860 from Ashbourne from a James and Sarah Smith it is written to their brother and sister. It was in my grandads belonging and he lived all his life in Mellor Derbyshire. He was Oswald Roe Wigley one of 7 brothers. his father was John Roe Wigley and grandfather was Henry Roe Wigley. Now Eliza/Elizabeth Wigley was sister to Henry and she was baptised in Bakewell around 1822 but her date of birth is unknown although Henry was born in 1813 so she could only be a couple of years younger than him. In this letter it states that Charles is dead and that he died at Shirley Derbyshire. It is telling whomever it is sent to that their father is ill and they have taken Sarah to live with them and that they send their love to Henry and his family and that Sarah and Fanny send their love to their aunts and uncles and cousins and their grandfather and grandmother. It requests that they ask Charles grandmother if he was in a club and if they could send all particulars (so Charles grandmother must live near to Mellor)so they can pass them on to where Charles died at Shirley. William jnr and Eliza (Wigley) had 2 daughters Sarah and Fanny so I presume they are the 2 girls mentioned and the Henry mentioned is my great great grandfather Henry Roe Wigley and Eliza Wigleys brother. The Charles is a mystery but may be more solvable now you have given the Maskery connection as on the 1851 census for Marple I have found Henry Roe Wigleys father George Roe Wigley living with his other 2 daughters and son William Roe Wigley now it isn't until you look at the original document you see that they also have a young boy of 7 living with them called Charles Maskery, so I wondered if the Charles who died in 1860 could be the same but i can find no record. Now on the 1861 cenus for Mellor the daughter of William Heathcote and Eliza, Frances is living with her uncle Henry and his family in Mellor, she later met someone there and married and moved to Nottingham. The other daughter Sarah, on the 1861 (mispelt surname of Heaghcote)cenus is living in Ashbourne with her uncle and aunt Thomas and Mary Smith. Now the letter stated that in 1860 James and Sarah Smith had taken Sarah to live with them so presumably Thomas could be whomever wrote the letters father. Ten years later I can't find Sarah but Thomas has moved to Mellor to live with his nephew George, Thomas is now a widow. The plot thickens! I wondered if William Heathcote Senior had a sister Mary who could have married Thomas Smith? DO you know of any siblings of William Snr and do you know of anymore of the Maskery connection at all?
I am very grateful of all your help and as you can see it has helped a great deal, I am determined to solve the mystery of the letter so wondered what had happened to William jnr after his wife died?
Many thanks again, Helen.

That's a pleasure.
How far back have you traced this family? Do you know whether William senior had an uncle William? I have found a William married to Jane Silcock in Ashbourne and with Mayfield connections whom I have assumed to be one of my Hognaston relatives, but he seems more likely to be linked to your family.
Stephen

Helen,

I can’t help with your main question on the Smith connection, but have found the family in the 1851 census, at New Road, Sturston, Ashbourne (HO107-2146-318-6):
William Heathcote, Head, Widower, 70, general labourer, Mayfield (Staffs.)
William do, Son, Widower, 33, Maltster’s labourer, Ashbourne
Thomas do, Son, U, 25, Coachmaker, Ashbourne
Elizabeth do, Daur, U, 30, Lace runner, Ashbourne
Mary do, Daur, U, 21, Do Do, Ashbourne
Sarah do, granddaur, 10, Scholar, Ashbourne
Fanny do, Do, 8, Do, Ashbourne.

The description of Thomas as a coachmaker is puzzling, as subsequently he is a clockmaker. Elizabeth appears to be the same person as Ellen in the christening records, 1841, 1861 and 1881 censuses.

I have a christening for William junior on 11 Dec 1814 at St Oswald, Ashbourne, son of William Heathcote and Mary (Archer?), and a marriage to Eliza Maskery on 31 Jan 1837, again at St Oswald’s. I note that an Eliza Wigley married David Maskery in 1833 in Duffield, and don’t find David or Eliza Maskery in the 1841 census, so deduce that Eliza was a widow when she married William Heathcote.

William senior I believe was christened in Mayfield 27 August 1780, son of John Heathcote and Sarah (Wood?).

Stephen
Hi I am looking for more info about William Heathcote he was born in Ashbourne Derbyshire in 1819 to father William and mother possibly Mary or Ann. He married ELizabeth Wigley and had 2 children Fanny born 1843 and Sarah born 1841 both born in Sturston Ashbourne. ELizabeth died around 1848 when the children were little and I am struggling to find out what happen to WIlliam after that. Frances is listed on the 1861 cenusu living in Mellor with her uncle HEnry Roe WIgley and later married a man from Marple and moved to Nottingham. Sarah is living with her uncle Thomas Smith on the 1861 census in Ashbourne. I am trying to find out if WIlliam Heathcote Senior (father of William born 1819) sister Mary married Thomas Smith as there is a Smith connection I am trying to make.
Any help would be gratefully received, Thomas Smith was born in Cheddleton Staffs in 1797.
William Senior was also born in Staffordshire around the late 1700s, many thanks,
Helen

John and Hannah are related to my family line and I have found that they are burried together in St Chads church yard Freehay. Mary Heathcote was married to Isaac Camwell also in St Chads Freehay. The Mary you are refering to was married to Charles Hill as you know, Mary was born 1st Oct 1820 and her her Father was John Heathcote born 15th April 1798.
Hi Stephen,
Thank you very much for that, I had come to a halt at that point as Henry (my g.gf) appears to have been born in Salford Manchester, and the records for there were damaged including his year of birth, so I was not progressing at all.I think Robert was born in 1881. I did not have the names Grace or Hibbert at all, so they are a welcome piece of information, and I did not know about the illegitimate birth or his mothers name Mary Ann. Also the line and name of John back to 1860 Bakewell is new to me. My wife and I are staying in Buxton in August for a few days and we intend visiting Bakewell, not for the first time though. Anyway all for now, and thank you once again, regards, Kneale.

Hi there.I was interested to read this thread.I have only just started tracing my family history and have discovered that I have a Mary Heathcote in my family.
She was born in Bidelph (Biddulph?)in 1820 and married my great great grandfather Charles Hill in 1849 at St Chads Freehay. From the 1871 Census it appears that they lived next door but one to John and Hannah Heathcote.
The household "in between" was occupied by Carles' brother Thomas(?) and his family.

If it turns out that we are descendants of the same Heathcotes then any stuff you got on them would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,
Thank you for your kind offer. Although Heathcotes resided in Bollington and Sutton John William Heathcote and his wife Sarah moved to Oldham Lancashire. As far as I know John and Sarah had 4 children, but I cannot find out what happened to Charles Edward Heathcote (son) of John. My mother told me that he committed suicide but I have found no evidence of this. Unfortunately Sarah died in Oldham in 1909 at the age of 42. John later moved back to Sutton near MacClesfield where he later met and married my grandma Phyllis Hulme.

There is only one Mary Heathcote born in 1857, she is recorded in the 1861 census. She was born in Cheadle, Staffordshire, this being the same county as winnothdale. Her parents are John and Hannah.John was born about Ashford, Derbyshire1824 She has siblings, Elizabeth 1, John 2 mnths, William 7 and Sarah 9. John was a labourer, Hannah was born Staveley Derby about 1822 (another stronghold of our Heathcotes.
They resided at (what looks like R(?(akuway which was a farm in Cheadle.
1871 census the family had moved to Sutton, Derbyshire, residing at 20 Parkside, at Sutton-cum-Duckmanton (home of some of my Heathcotes. John was a farm labourer. They also had living with them John's mother Mary, aged 76. They had added Robert S. 10 and annie 6. The grandmother Mary was born in Derby, Derbyshire. Is it possible that Isaac's surname was Cambell as I have found a marriage of Mary Heathcote to an Isaac Cambell. If I can help some more let me know as I have heaps of info on the Heathcotes

Heathcote family - York County, PA

Charles Heathcote (Born 1820) arrived in the US from England abt 1848, wife Jane was also born in England. By 1850 he was living in Glen Rock, York County, PA. They had at least 3 children: Matthew, 1853; Sarah Ellen, 1865 & Mattie E., 1871, who married Roland Seitz of Glen Rock. By 1900, both Matthew and Sarah had died, although Charles & Jane were still living. There are many Heathcote families in Southeren York County. I'm thinking they must be related, but haven't found the connections yet.

Hi Kneale & Stephen,

Grace Amelia & Henry Hibbert were my 2nd great grandparents. Two of their daughters married Adams' and I am descended from Hetty Heathcote and Edwin Adams. I have a photo of Robert Heathcote at their son Reginald's wedding (he was Reg's best man).

We also had a note that Henry Hibbert was an illegitimate son; however I have since obtained a copy of his marriage that states his father's name as George Heathcote (a farmer). I also have photos of Grace Amelia and Henry Hibbert as well as information about their lives if you would like it. Plus Grace Amelia's parents details.

Cheers,

Eddie Adams

I think there are two different families here.
John and Hannah Heathcote, parents of Mary born in Cheadle, were still in Winnothdale in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. John was born in Biddulph in 1824, son of John Heathcote and Mary Walley; and Hannah was born in Checkley also about 1824.
John Heathcote from Sutton-cum-Duckmanton was christened in Ashford in the Water in 1823, son of Joseph and Mary Heathcote. His daughter Mary was born in Sutton about 1858.

There are two Peter Heathcotes in the 1851 census: a hardware dealer aged 59, lodging in Preston; and a bazaar keeper aged 61 staying with his son Orlando in Blackburn. Both widowers, and both born in Longstone, Derbyshire. Is this the same person recorded twice, or were there two different Peters?

I have noted a Robert Heathcote born in Ashford (1880?) son of Henry Hibbert Heathcote and Grace Amelia Doddemeade. Henry born 1844, illegitimate son of Mary Ann Heathcote. The line goes back to John Heathcote who married in Bakewell in 1660.

Richard,
There are a number of Tamworth entries on the IGI that don't show parents, but the parents are named in the actual register. However, at present I can't find my notes from the copy of the register at Lichfield: I agree it needs re-checking.
1841 census shows Robert and Mary both born outside Leicestershire, and your burial record for Robert in 1858 aged 69 is consistent with a 1789 birth. I can't find him in 1851, though, which would confirm place of birth.
Stephen

Hi Eddie, yes I would love a copy of those photos. Robert was my grandfather and Henry Hibbert and Grace Amelia were my 2xg.grandparents also. You are right about Henry and Grace's m. cert; I also have a copy, now theres a but! I also have a copy of Henry Hibberts b. cert; his father is recorded as William Hibbert a cotton dyer. It was registered on the 1st of May 1844, and he was born to Mary Ann on the 23rd of March 1844 at 44 Stanley St; Salford.
I suspect the George Heathcote on the m.cert; was her father? Perhaps they were attempting to hide the illegitimacy? Another but is she also had a brother called George? Intriguing,I doubt we will ever know the answer. If you send me your e-mail address I email a copy to you of the b. cert; Kneale. e-mail: KnealeH@talktalk.net

Re: Heathcotes of Great Longstone, Derby

Whilst collecting data for the families of Heathcote in the Lancashire area, I came across a Peter Heathcote, born abt 1790 in Longstone, Derbyshire, occupation - Bazaar Keeper. He first appears on the 1841 Census in Lancashire and remains there until his death, which I think is 1868 in Burnley. Hope this helps for your search for Heathcotes descended from Longstone.
