I did a little more research, and it appears that by the 1930 census John and Leila were living separate, but still listed as married.
Listed on Palms Court in Reading, Berks Co, PA:
Leila L Heckman, head of household, renting property for $22, age 51, married, married at age 32, b. PA, parents b. PA, occupation: none
daughter Mildred A, age 18, single, occupation looks like coverer of boxes, born PA
daughter Catharine M, age 13, born PA
daughter Margaret R, age 10, born PA
For the same census year, this appears to be the same John but now living with parents on Locust Street in Reading is:
Joel Heckman, head of household, owns $3000 property, age 84, married at age 25, b. PA, parents b. PA
wife Alice, age 69, married first at age 27, b. PA
son John, age 54, married first at age 34, b. PA
(notice no wife for John in household).
Also found a John A in the 1910 census (street appears to be Thirteenth St), Reading, Berks Co, PA, which may or may not be the same John. He's the right age and has the same occupation, so he may be worth investigating further as you noted he may have been married prior to Leila...
John A Heckman, age 34, married once (within the year) b. PA, parent b. PA, painter of houses.
wife Rebecca, age 29, married once (within the year), 0 children, born PA, parents born PA.
The 1900 census shows what appears to be your John living with his parents in Perry Twp, Berks Co, PA:
Joel Hackman/Heckman?, b. July 1845, age 54, married 12 yrs, b. PA, green grocier.
wife Alice, born Apr 1860, age 40, married 12 yrs, 1 child/1 living. (this must be a 2nd marriage and a stepmom to John)
son John, born May 1876, age 24, single no occupation listed.
M in law Catharine Martin, born Feb 1840, age 60, married 43 yrs, 7 children/2 living, born Switzerland, immigrated 1853.
and 1880 census shows what may be this family:
1880 census for Shoemakersville, Berks Co, PA
Joel Heckman, 34, carpenter, b. PA
wife Malinda, 28, keeping house, cannot read/write, b. PA
son John, 4, b. PA
son Howard, 2, b. PA
Sorry I can't prove any of this, but it should give you some leads to check out.
