I am seeking information about Matthias Heckman, b. 1734 or 1744 in Funkstown, Maryland. He married a woman by the first name of Maria. Matthias and his wife sponsored a number of baptisms of children in the German Reformed Church in Hagerstown during the 1790's & early 1800's.

Matthias was an Ensign in the Revolutionary War and served in Maryland's Flying Camp. Please reply if you have any information. Thanks.

Peter Heckman *

I posted several years ago about Peter, but I've since found out more about him. His father was born aboard ship on the way from Germany and they lived near Reading, Pa. Peter was born in 1780 and the family fled from indians many times before moving. Peter was a saddler and traveling minister. He even went to Canada and met the Governor (Queen Victoria's father), the Duke of York. Eventually, Peter made his way to Chambersburg and saw Christina Leap, daughter of the merchant, Daniel Leap. They married in 1811 and lived there until 1824. That year they moved to Versailles Twp, Allegheny County, to land left to Christina by her father in his will.

Does anyone have any info about a male Heckman that was born aboard a ship on the way from Germany? This would have been about 1745-1760 time period. I've run against a brick wall on identifying Peter's father, or even brothers or sisters.

DNA Testing for Descendants of Philip Heckman of Armstrong County, PA

Recently completed Y-chromosome DNA testing has confirmed that the Philip Heckman who lived in Armstrong County, PA, and who married Maria Esther Otterman, was the son of Albrecht Heckman, the immigrant from Germany in 1753. Albrecht lived in Guildford Township, Franklin County, PA, and died there in 1804.

For many years some researchers in the Franklin County area claimed that Albrecht's son Philip was the same Philip Heckman who lived in the Newville area of Cumberland County, PA.

After many years of research, which always lead to a brick wall, DNA testing has cleared up this issue.

Althought DNA testing at present is somewhat expensive, it may prove to be your only source of proof to help break down those brick walls.

Best regards to all,

Richard S. Heckman

I am looking for more information on my grandfathers family who were living in Iowa between 1920 through at least 1942. My grandfather is Gail Wayne (GW) Heckman who joined the Navy in December of 1941 and died at sea in August of 1942. I have information about the sinking of his ship and the types of duties he may have performed. I would like to find out about his family especially his surname line. Any information would be appreciated. I believe GW was living near Anita, Iowa around 1940 at the age of 20. There is a page dedicated to him at www.armed-guard.com under the button "SS Topa Topa". Thanks in Advance

PHOTO OF HECKMAN FAMILY, JEFFERSON CO. OK

Dear List,

I have a copy of a Heckman family photograph. It was mistakenly sent to me as one of my family members. However, it has now been verified as a Heckman family who lived near Ryan, Jefferson Co. OK when the 1920 census was taken.

I believe this photo is of a John Heckman, b. @ 1881, and wife Emma, b. @ 1883. There are two children in this photo, and I think they may be Richard, b. @ 1905 and Willie, b. @ 1909. These dates are from the 1920 census record. If my ID is correct, this photo would have been taken @ 1911/1912.

This family lived next door to my Grandparents, Aaron F. and Ella Johnson in Jefferson Co. OK in 1920. My limited info is that the Heckman family moved from Jefferson Co. in the 1920's. So, if this is your family, and you are interested in this photo, please contact me privately at: jmje36@aol.com.

Sincerely, Judy in TX

Heckman DNA family research

A Hickman/Heckman surname reconstruction project has recently been started in conjunction with Familytreedna.com. The intent of this project is to reconstruct Hickman/Heckman family connections using male Y dna. This is a relatively new application for established genetic science. All testing is done by the genetics faculty at the Univeristy of Arizona. There are already five members and we hope to enlist the participation of as many different Hickman subsets as possible. Male Hickmans/Heckmans of both German and English descent are encouraged to participate. It is hoped that this project will provide another tool for Hickman/Heckman researchers to supplement traditional paper research. The public Hickman/Heckman website can be viewed by typing Heckman in the search box at www.Familytreedna.com.

HECKMAN / KUNS / Miller

The info provided here is from notes in the papers of John S. Whiteneck II who was the founder of Generations of Peace. I believe this is info on his wife, Lois Heckman Whiteneck.
The info I have is from written notes found in their papers. I have no clue as to the truth to any of this info but would like to share with someone that I thought might be interested.

David Heckman possible born in IN grandsire of Lois
son of John Heckman and Barbara Kuns; John born in Henry Co., IN; Barbara born in Dlephi, Carroll Co., IN
John Heckman s/o David Heckman born in VA near Roanoke married (I think) Mary Moyers born in VA.

Barbara Kuns d/o John Kuns (Pennsylvania Dutch) and Hannah Kuns (Penn. Dutch)

Moyers, Heckman were of German descent while the KUNS were of Penn. extradation.
Mary Moyer's father was a very tall man. All these people were Dundards but the only preacher was Mary MOYERs' father who Grandpa thought was Danial MOYER. All were farmers. John KUNS could not write his name but farmed & carried on a tan yard & slaughter business.

Then this goes on to talk about the MILLER family-- a Elizabeth Virginia MILLER who was also a grandmother to Lois Heckman Whiteneck.
I am looking for information on Alfred and Maria Heckman. both born around the 1830's in PA. They had 5 children, all of who supposedly lived into or close to their 90's. Maria also lived to be 90 or 100, Alfred died before 1900.

The children are:
-Mary Alice Heckman Kyler(b. 10-12-1856, d. 10-11-1956) this is my great-great grandmother
-Martha Heckman Savage (b @ 1863),
-Lida Heckman Miller (b @ 1866)
-Isaiah (b about 1860, d @ 1956) married Alvina?
-William (b @ 1870, d about 1956) married Margaret?

I am not sure about the wives names (they were written very messy). I found this family (minus Mary Alice) in both the 1880 and 1870 census in Columbia County, Scott Twp. I can't seem to trace back any further than that.
Any info would be appreciated.
thanks
Janice

Looking for info on Peter Heckman who married Christina Leab (or Leap) 1811 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, PA. He was born 1781-1784 in Northumberland County, according to information given by his son, Isreal Gideon Heckman, for the "History of Allegheny County, PA". A lead suggested that his father's name was Adam, but I cannot verify that. There is an Adam Heckman in Franklin County at that time, but is most likely Peter's brother.
Peter died in 1840 in Versailles Twp, Allegheny County. He and Christiana had 11 children.

new hunch about ancestors

Am pursuing the lead that Adam (1780) Heckman may have been a brother of the Philip Heckman who married a Poppenmeyer. And they were possibly sons of Andrew Heckman(circa 1835). They also may have had another brother and 4 sisters in 1790 PA census. Does anyone have any info on this family (not Philip - I have alot about his descendents!) from Cumberland/Franklin county Pa. They possibly descend from Johann Peter and Elisa Margareth Heckman. Also does anyone know if Andrew may have been a brother of Albrect Heckman who settled in Franklin county.
All hunches! Help me out PLEASE!!!

My oldest Heckman is John Heckman form Berks County, PA. He was born (March) 1817 and died 8 March 1864 and is buried at St. Michaels Church in Tilden Township. He was married circa 1843 to Rebecca Burkey (b. 13 Nov 1819 – d. 26 Apr 1905). She is buried at St. John’s in Hamburg, PA.

Their children are: Willoughby B. b. 21 Sep 1844; Abraham B. b. 7 Dec 1846 – d. 10 Aug 1914; Sarah b. 21 Nov 1848; Samuel b. 31 Jan 1853; Catharine (Kitty) b. 8 Sep 1855; Elizebeth b. Dec 1859 – d. Oct 1895 or 97 and John b. cir 1861.

Most of the children were baptized at St. Michaels. Abraham married Kate B. ? – she was born 18 Sep 1857 – d. 19 Dec 1918. They are both buried at St. John’s in Hamburg. Also buried there are Catharine (Kitty) who was married to Harry Wireman (b. 7 Sep 1858 – 8 Jan 1930) and Elizebeth who was unmarried. Willoughby, my GG-grandfather was married to Rebecca Loos.

If anyone has any information on any of them – please let me know – I am having a hard time finding John’s parents. I have not found an actual birth or baptismal record – the birth date I have comes from his tombstone.

Thanks!
Patti Keefer Billow

Heckman Brick Wall

My grandfather was Arthur Fredrick Heckman, born (probably) in New Baltimore, Michigan. According to family, his parents died when he was a baby and he was raised by an uncle until he was about 12, when he was on his own riding the trains in the southeast Michigan area. He never had a birth certificate and had to give the state the information for one when he needed it for work, and then complained that they had gotten the year wrong. He always drove around the New Baltimore area looking for his parents graves, but could never find them. My mother always told us his birthday was 1/27/1888 and he didn't know his parents names.
To make a long story short, out of despiration I finally sent for his SS records, and found not only his birthdate was actually 1/27/1889, but that his parents names were Henry Heckman and Mary Lozzen. I thought my brick wall was finally crumbling, until I tried to find them! I have found a few Henrys and a couple Mary Lozzens, but nothing I can tie together, or even place in the New Baltimore area at the right time.
The only other info I have is that my Grandfather thought he had a sister named Lillian.
If any of these names ring a bell with anyone, I would really love to hear from you. I'm completely out of ideas as to where else to look. Thanks Sandi Green

I am looking for any information on my grandmother, Catherine Heckman, who was born at Hatteras St., Troy Hill, Pittsburgh, PA on 2/28/1871. (Died 2/17/1960.) Her parents were Charles Heckman, possible born in Brady's Bend, Armstrong Co, PA and Natalie Roesser, possibly born in Essen, Germany. I believe there were other children in the family but I am not sure. Catherine married Joseph Simon around 1895 and they had 6 children including my father Vincent G. Simon. This is absolutely all I know about my grandmother and her family. Has anyone come across a Catherine or Charles Heckman who fits this picture? Would love to hear from you. Thanks, Sara

My mom read an article in the Muskegon Chronicle (Michigan) of a Donald Heckman who was reunited with his son, Christopher Windhorst, that was leaving for the possible war in Iraq. My mother was curious to see if they are related to her. I am having no luck what so ever on finding anything. If any one knows of this family I would appreciate any help. The paper stated that Donald Heckman is from Indianapolis, IN. Thank you. My name is Alisa and my email is whitear@core.com

Peter & Elisabeth Heckman PA & Ohio

I am looking for info on Peter Heckman & Elisabeth Bunstein, they were married 6 Sept 1811 PA, Peter was the son of Johannes "John" Heckman and Susanna Hornecker, He is on the tax assessment records from 1810 - 1831 Lower Nazareth and Bethlehem Twps. He sold off all his lands by 1832 and is not found in any records from this time, family genealogies in the past say that Elisabeth moved with her nephew Jacob Bunstine to Ohio and died there, but nothing is said of Peter, I don't know if he died in PA or Ohio.... I know they had one daughter born in 1812 named Catherine, I have John Heckman Sr will and his wife Susanna Hornecker Heckman's will that give the names of the children as Adam, George, Peter, John Jr, Jacob, Margaret m. John Heine, Susanna m. Jonathan Hunt, Catherine m. Abraham Brown:
Peter deeded land to Mathias Schnabel in 1822, and in 1830 granted land to John Unangst, after this there are no records of him and Elisabeth. I am hoping someone out there will be familiar with this family, especially Elisabeth and hoping Peter when they moved to Ohio with their nephew and perhaps their death dates and where buried and if they had anymore children.
Thanks so much
Tanya Biblgirl@msn.com
