My Heckmann family migrated to America from Rothenberg Darmstadt Hessen in 1850 something. I know what you mean about the spelling. My family legally changed it to Hickman in 1870. The old immigrant, John George Heckmann died with the old spelling in 1869 in LaSalle Co., IL. He was born 1823 in Rothenberg
