Classification: Query
Surnames: Selgrad
Hi: There are Selgrads in Ontario, Canada and Linz Austria. I myself have recently moved from Ontario to Wales, Britain and have done research on the name as has my cousin in Austria. Our side of the family had Michael as the patriarch, born in Zrenjanin, now Yugoslavia, at that time Austro-Hungarian Empire. But the family's origins are in the Pirmasens region (now in Germany) known as Alsace-Lorraine, an area that has flipped between France and Germany - otherwise known as the Black Forest area now. Sel means salt in French and Grad is slavic for town - so translated it means salt-town or in German, Salzburg - at least that is what we think. Love to hear your point of view...
