Classification: Query
Surnames: William Hankins, Polly Hedden
I really need some help figuring out a couple of Williams in my Hankins line. William Hankins b 1783 in VA is said to have married October 17, 1805 in Shelby County Kentucky, Polly Hedden b abt 1789. I have tentatively accepted that this is my William Hankins (4th great grandfather). However, I have noticed several researchers have William and Polly in Jefferson County, Indiana. The various ones have his death as 21 Oct 1864 in Jefferson Co, IN. However, in the Biographical sketch of Harvey Munday, Husband of Matilda Hankins, daughter of MY William Hankins, William Hankins died at their home in Marion Twp, Hendricks County, IN in 1862. Polly died at their home April 23, 1885. Now either My William is not the wife of Polly Hedden and folks have that confused or the William and Polly in Jefferson County are not the William and Polly from Shelby County Kentucky. In the 1850 Hendricks County Census, William age 67 is there with Polly 58 yo, Matilda 25 yo, Martha A Cavett 23 yo, William 19 (dittoed as Cavett, but I believe to be William P. Hankins. He is, after all their son and brother, who is about that age and Martha got her Cavett name by marrying John E T Cavett, October 28, 1845. He died in 1848) and John E T Cavett 2 yo. In the 1860 Census there is a William Hankins born in VA in 1786, Living in Jefferson County< IN, but it is with Elizabeth age 63. MY William Hankins age 78 born in Virginia, is living with Harvey and Matilda (Hankins) Munday in Marion Twp, Hendricks County, IN in 1860. I believe my William Hankins lived just over the line in Jackson Twp, Putnam County in the 1840 Census. All of the ages for children match. He is also 4 names away from Harvy Munday. In the 1830 Census, there is a William Hankins living by some Heddens in southeastern Shelby County, KY, however the children appear to be too old and too many for my William (?). In the 1830 census, there is a William in Dubois County, IN, with children about the right age for mine, but has 1 extra male (who could have died, simply speculation). The mother and father appear to be a little young in this one. The William in Livingston County, KY and another in Indiana do not seem to match at all. So going back to the Shelby County, KY William Hankins, if I allow for the fact that there is a man and a woman of the proper age range and the possibility that there might be parents, and therefore siblings, living with them, I might be able to conclude that this is them and therefore these are William and Polly (Hedden) Hankins. However, if many are convinced that those two (Hankins+Hedden) lived out their lives in Jefferson County, Indiana, then I must conclude that they are not mine. Can somebody help me, please? And then we'll go to who are William's parents. I am sorry this is so long, but I have been wrestling with it for some time.
