Mary HEDDEN married to William HANKINS in Shely Co, KY

I apologize for this very long post, but I believe you will understand why as you read and investigate this information. There are a host of family trees and posts online which state that William Hankins, who was married to Mary Hedden of Shelby County, Kentucky, settled in Jefferson County, Indiana.

I PROPOSE TO SHOW THAT WILLIAM HANKINS OF JEFFERSON COUNTY INDIANA IS NOT THE SON-IN-LAW OF ABRAHAM HEDDEN OF SHELBY COUNTY, KENTUCKY. BUT RATHER, THAT WILLIAM HANKINS OF PUTNAM (right on the line with Hendricks) AND HENDRICKS COUNTY, INDIANA IS, IN FACT, THE SON-IN-LAW OF ABRAHAM HEDDEN, BEING MARRIED TO HIS DAUGHTER, MARY, LATER NAMED POLLY. (Polly was a common nickname for Mary. Why? I don’t know. I didn’t think of the nickname, they did back then. I just report it.)

IN 1820
There are two Williams in Jefferson Co IN. (1) William Hankins Ages of Males: 1 - 26 thru 45, 3 under 10. Ages of Females: 1 - 16 thru 26, 2 under 10.
(2) William C Hankins Ages of Males: 1 Over 45, 1 - 16 thru 26, 1 - 16 thru 18, 1 - 10 thru 16, 2 under 10. Age of Females: 1 - 26 thru 45, 2 - 10 thru 16, 2 under 10.

THE DIFFFICULTY OF EITHER OF THESE WILLIAMS BEING THE ONE MARRIED TO MARY HEDDEN IS THAT WILLIAM STILL LIVES IN SHELBY COUNTY KENTUCKY CLOSE TO ABRAHAM HEDDEN!

Wm Hanken is listed Three persons away from Abraham Headen in Shelby County, Kentucky, Southeastern District. William Ages of Males: 1 - 26 thru 45, 2 - under 10. Ages of Females: 1 - 26 thru 45, 3 - 10 thru 16, 3 under 10.

IN 1830
There was one William in Jefferson Co IN. Ages of Males: 1- 40 thru 50, 1 - 15 thru 20, 2 - 10 thru 15, 2 - 5 thru 10, 1 under 5. Ages of Females: 1 - 70 thru 80, 1 - 30 thru 40, 1 - 5 thru 10, 1 under 5. He fit’s the one from VA in 1850.

THE DIFFFICULTY OF HIM BEING THE ONE MARRIED TO MARY HEDDEN IS THAT WILLIAM STILL LIVES IN SHELBY COUNTY KENTUCKY IN THE SOUTHEASTERN DISTRICT WHERE ABRAHAM HEDDEN LIVES!

William Hankins in Shelby Co KY Ages of Males: 1 - 40 thru 50, 1 (or 2) - 10 thru 15, 2- 5 thru 10, 1 under 5. Ages of Females: 1 - 50 thru 60, 1 - 30 thru 40, 2- 15 thru 20, 1 - 10 thru 15, 2 - 5 thru 10.

IN 1840
There is one William in Jefferson Co IN. Ages of Males: 1 - 50 thru 60, 3 - 15 thru 20, 1 - 10 thru 15. Ages of Females: 1 - 80 thru 90, 1 - 40 thru 50, 1 - 5 thru 10. He fits the one from VA in 1850.

There is NO William in Shelby County, Kentucky.
However, in Putnam County, Indiana Jackson Twp (In the township right next to Marion Twp Hendricks County) there is William Listed with the following: Ages of Males: 1 - 50 thru 60, 1 - 20 thru 30, 1 - 5 thru 10. Ages of Females: 1 - 40 thru 50, 2 - 20 thru 30, 1 - 15 thru 20.

There is also a William HEDDEN then listed in Putnam County.

1850
One William Hankins in Jefferson Co of the correct age, 61, to be married to Mary Hedden. He was born in VA in 1789, but in this census, he is married to Elizabeth born in SC.

The other two Williams mentioned in the 1850 Jefferson Co IN census were too young and born in Indiana. One is married to an Elizabeth who was born in IN. The other is 16.

There are four Mary Hankins in the 1850 Jefferson Co IN Census. Three were born in IN and one was born in IA. The one from IA is 23. The other three are 2, 5, and 14. None could be Mary Hedden

1860
There are five William Hankins in Jefferson Co IN. Four were born in IN. Ages 8, 10, 26, 44. The 44 year old is married to Elizabeth 33, born in Indiana. William born in VA is still there with Elisabeth born in SC.

There are six Mary Hankins in Jefferson Co In. Five were born in IN. One was born in Europe. Their ages are 8 mos, 2, 6, 12, 32, 40. All are too young and not born in Kentucky.

1870
There is one Mary Hankins in Jefferson Co IN. She was born in Indiana abt 1869.

There are three Williams, all born in IN. Their ages are 2, 3, and 51.

In 1880, my Polly Hankins is listed as 90 years old. This places her birth at about 1790. Her birth, in most places is listed as 1789 or 1790, making her 15 or 16 years old when she married William in 1805 in Shelby County, Kentucky. She died 23 Apr 1885.

In the History of Hendricks County dated 1885, there is this paragraph under the name of Harvey Munday:

“Oct. 15, 1854, Mr. Munday married for his second wife Matilda Hankins, born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1820. She came with her parents to this county in 1839. Her father died at the home of Mr. Munday in 1862, and her mother died in Center Township, April 23, 1885, at the advanced age of ninety-six years. Mr. Munday has three children by his last marriage - Mrs. Martha V. Yount, Mrs. Judith Ellen Graham, and Woodson, living with his parents. In politics Mr. Munday is a Democrat. He has been a member of the regular Baptist church since 1839.”

What do we know from these facts?

1.	Mary Hedden married William Hankins 17 October 1805 in Shelby Co, Kentucky. Also know from the Abraham Hedden Will)
2.	Polly (last name not confirmed) was married to William Hankins of Virginia.
3.	Their daughter, Matilda, was born in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1820.
4.	There was one William Hankins living in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1820.
5.	William lived very close to Abraham Hedden in 1820.
6.	The William of Jefferson County, Indiana, born in VA, lived in Jefferson County in 1820 and 1830.
7.	All of the other Williams in Jefferson County were too young.
8.	None of the Williams of Jefferson County were married to a Mary or anything close.
9.	Matilda’s family, with Polly and William as parents, left Shelby County, Kentucky and Moved to Hendricks County, Indiana in 1839.
10.	In 1840 there is no William Hankins in Hendricks County.
11.	There is a William Hankins in Jackson Twp, Putnam County, Indiana in 1840.
12.	In 1850 there is no William Hankins in Putnam County.
13.	In 1850 and thereafter, there is a William Hankins in Marion Twp, Hendricks County.
14.	Matilda is listed as the daughter of that William Hankins in 1850.
15.	In the 1860 Census, William lives with Harvey and Matilda Munday.

The Williams of Jefferson County do not appear to have been able to be married to Mary Hedden. You may look throughout Indiana and Kentucky at this time for Marys and Williams and you will find none that fit the William and Mary of Shelby County, KY as do William and Polly Hankins of Hendricks County, Indiana. I have searched.

If I have made some error, please, point it out. I have struggled with this for years and now have spent the last three days, nearly solid, working on this wall.

For those who believe that some William Hankins of Jefferson County, Indiana is the husband of Mary Hedden, please do not get angry with me. I am willing to look at any and all evidence that there might be and come to a totally different conclusion. After all, through the years and during this three day period of very little sleep, I have come to the conclusion that my William is and is not the right one. At one point I came to the near conclusion that William and Polly’s son, William P Hankins, might have been a bigamist, living both in Hendricks County with his wife Nancy and in Marion county with another wife. I have abandoned that one also. It’s always good to know that they are not, especially for someone like me who’s grandfather WAS. Let me tell you, that really confuses genealogy when you have to trace two families for the same person.

So please, bring out your information and let’s see what we can find.
Joseph Hedden (b. abt 1810) New Jersey

I am still trying to locate my g g grandmother Harriet Hedden's parents. She was born 1838 in Hoboken or Newark. Her death certificate said her parents were Hedden and Arbuckle, but her sister Mary (b. NJ 1840) said they were Joseph Hedden and Rachel Williams. There are no records of these two girls before their marriages, about 1857 and 1860, to Charles Mullen and Stephen Johnson. I know she must be connected somewhere! There is a 12 year old Harriet Heddon in Pequannock, Morris, NJ in 1850, but no other clues as to whether she's the right one, or even if she is, where she came from. Anybody got any ideas?
Ken
Poulsbo, WA

I don't know who her parents were, but I'm hoping someone on this site might have her listed in a family tree. She married Adolphus S. Mountjoy on 2 March 1871 and they lived in Anderson County Kentucky. She died 4 June, 1890. I would so like to know her parentage so I could continue my research. Thank you in advance. I am out of town for a while. Please email me at k_baughm@bellsouth.net

Joseph Hedden, Rachel Williams, New Jersey

My gg grandmother Harriet Hedden was born supposedly in Hoboken in 1838, her sister Mary in 1840. Harriet's death certificate said her parents were HEDDEN and ARBUCKLES, Mary's death certificate said JOSEPH HEDDEN and RACHEL WILLIAMS. Harriet married Charles Mullen in 1859 in Newark and moved to Kansas. Mary married Jose Gallardo and died in Newark in 1911. Anybody heard of these folks?

Joseph 1702-1798

My father, Peter John Whitfield. Hedden travelled extensively in New Jersey and New York and found the following:
Joseph , 1702-1798 married Rebecca Dodd, 1703-1745
He married Rebecca Williams Their children -- not necessarily in order -- Ebenezer, David, Elijah (m. Farrand) Job, Simon, Martha, Phoebe, Rebecca 1751-1841, Elizabeth 1758, Joseph 1728-1780, Jonathan 1733-1795, Sarah and Joanna. Joseph Hedden, 1702 -1798 had 13 children, 176 grandchildren, 106 great grandchildren. I believe my great grandfather David 1811-1885 was one of these great grandchildren. Will appreciate any info.

Matilda's sister, Elizabeth "Eliza" NEWHOUSE, b. c1845-1846, married Elijah C. CAIN in Obion Co., TN. She was living in her father's household in Obion Co. TN in 1870 and in her brother's household in 1880 in Obion Co. Some of her siblings moved to KY after that time. I haven't been able to find her after that unless this Eliza CAIN is the right one. I don't know what happened to her husband and can find only one indication of a child, a son, John, who is listed in her father's household in 1870. In KY Death Records (online) there is the following: Eliza CAIN, age 84 Death Place: Jefferson Co., KY Aug. 2, 1930. (Above census was taken in April of that year.) Trying to trace my Eliza has been very confusing. If any of these names are familiar, please let me know. I'd appreciate any information that might help me prove or disprove whether this Eliza and my Eliza were the same person. Thanks very much.
Brenda

Ruby Leah (?) Hedden or Heddon - Navy nurse gave birth to baby boy 1940's

I'm looking for a woman by the name of Ruby Leah Hedden/Heddon Newman. She was a Navy nurse stationed in VA during the war, and gave birth to a baby boy April 16, 1945; which she gave up for adoption. I believe the father of this baby was killed aboard his ship out at sea.
I also believe her family is from upstate NY, and may have started the fishing lure business with the same name.
That baby boy is my father Charles Leigh Newbern, and he would like to know about his birth family before he passes away, as he is terminal.
Thanks!

Hedden family - around Albion, Illinois

I can't get a good handle on this side of the family. My grandson is real interested in his heritage and we are trying to find relatives. My father-in-law was Ralph Travis Hedden,
born 12-31-1893 and died 1-14-43. He had a sister Dayne Anita and a brother Gordon I know. His mother was Josephine Morgan and his father was Samuel N. That's all I know of this side of the family except for my own generation.
If we are in anyway connected I'd appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Barb Hedden
Gillespie, Illinois
Descendants of James Hedden Maria Rosekrans

Looking for descendants of James HEDDEN & Maria ROSEKRANS, d/o Warren Rosecrans & Phebe Hoff/Haff. Have dates, etc. If you know of the 1920 book "Glimpses Through Portals of the Past" by descendants of Warren Rosecrans (Hedden's, Earle's, etc.), you will see that the authors believe Johannes Rosecrans m. Barbara Holst were the parents of Warren Rosecrans and the son of Jacobus Rosecrans m. Sarah Dekker/Decker. Allen Rosecran's book says this Johannes m. Maria Roosa and that there is no proof that Warren was the s/o Johannes and Barbara Holst. Otherwise, their lineage matches everything in Allen's book back to Herman Henderickzen Rosenkrans. Very much want to straighten out this discrepancy. Hope to hear from related hedden's. Brooke
b-fry@usa.net

I would estimate the photo was taken in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Note on back says this man is from Germany. If this is of interest to anyone please contact me and I will be glad to send it.

Looking for information on Mary Ann Hedden who was born in virginia, moved to Ohio, and later on to Illinois. We don't have her maiden name or her husband's first name, but we do know that she had a son named Louis and possibly a daughter, both born in Ohis. Any info out there? Please let me know.
