The research into the Hedefin family was commissioned by a distant cousin of mine. He contacted the Ulster Historical Foundation who undertook the research on his behalf.

You might like to do the same. Their website is ancestryireland.com.

Barbara, I have written to you in the past and just tried again to your email address and it will not go through. My great grandfather was Samuel Hidifont and the name has been recorded as Haddefion, Haddefon, Hedfent,Hediphent. I know Samuel was from Ballymoney in 1863 when he first married. His father was James.I had found Hedefents in Bangor records in PRONI a few years ago. I would appreciate any insight you may have as to how I can delve deeper.

I have just found this board and I hope someone can help me. I am searching for info on Agnes Hedifen Kelly. her parent s were suppose to be John Hedifen and Mary McGill from Scotland. She was born in New Jersey abt 1860. Her husband was Michael Kelly of " Slide, Kelly, Slide" fame. She possibly lived in New York City after his death in 1894. Has anyone heard of any of these Hedifens?

Re: Hedefin/e family

Hi Sean

I am a Hedefin(e) and my research so far indicates that there is no direct relationship between the Headifens and the Hedefin(e)s. The Hedefins definitely originate from N.Ireland.

The Headifens originate from Scotland with a branch in New Zealand. I have had it confirmed from a Headifen (Richard I believe?) who lives in Staunton, Virginia, USA that it was his (great?) grandfather that emigrated from Scotland to NZ.

If you search the genealogy websites particularly the mormon web site, you will get details of deceased Headifens who were resident during the 19th/early 20th centuries in the US( New Jersey and New York), Scotland and NZ. The gentleman above is related to some of the NZ Headifens and one of them was his aunt he remembers as a child.

There are several Headifens living in The Antipodes today. (See yellow and white pages for NZ and Oz for telephone listings). Also, there are a couple of Headifens in Texas too.

Perform a a search in say Google and you will get details of these people in order for you to make contact if you wish to.

I hope this helps.
My husband's great-grandmother was Jemima Hedefine, one of ten children of James Hedefin/e and Eliza Brennan originally from Ireland. They went to Northumberland in the UK in the 1840's.
I have considerable information on their descendants and would be interested in hearing from anyone connected to this family

Hedefine Family Tree

Dear Lynne,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was on leave from the office for the half term when I received an e-mail regarding your message. I am indeed related to your husband. My mother Joan was a Hedefine. My great-grandfather, Robert was Jemima's brother. I too have lots of information and details of the Hedefines' still living today from my particular branch of the Hedefine clan. I'm not certain whether you can see my e-mail address posted along with this message. For information it's barbara@abaca.co.uk and I'd be delighted to hear from you or your husband, as would some of the other Hedefines who've done most of the research to date. I know that the descendents of Jemima have not been entered on the current tree. There is quite a lot of background information about James Hedefin which has been obtained from his British Army Records.

If you contact me by e-mail I'll give you the names and addresses of the two gentleman who would be very pleased to share their findings with you.

Best Regards

Barbara Cartwright
