this is deffinately the same family. shows on 1911 census as William born 1873 plashettes northumberland married to mary jane in 1898 (born 1879) children, eva, mary ann, mary jane, archibold, william junior, and catherine - no birth certificate exists for catherine anywhere but on census says born at Happy land county durham in 1899 this would be the correct age, she was my great grandmother so i know she existed even without the birth certificate!! she married edward best taws in 1919 and died in 1936.. from their found entris on austarlain electorol register for 1930's for william and mary jane as well as for mary ann who married frederick day and william junior. Herbert alexander lambs mothers maden name was also catherine hedley born 1871, so eva and herbie had hedley family on both sides

I have an Eva Hedley in my tree(who seems to be no direct Hedley relation to me) was born in about 1902 and married Herbert Alexander Lamb (born 1896) who is my 2nd cousin once removed! Eva's parents were William Hedley (1872-1961)and Mary Shields (1879 - 1954)married in Consett in 1897 and both of whom died in Australia. I don't have Catherine as a sibling, but there's Mary Ann (born 1900) Archibald, William, Francis and Terence. It all sounds a likely link and it may be that Catherine was another sibling - I'll keep looking!
Cheers
Richard

Although I have researched Hedley's from Tynemouth I do not know a lot about Eva and have not made a connection yet.

its a while since i have looked her but since the release of the 1911 census have just found my catherine and william hedley!! finally! My Cathrines sister is eva hedley. and i know there is a lamb connection, it seems the previous threads now are tying together! My Catheine hedley would have been the sister inlaw of herbie (herbert) Lamb.

Searching for information on g.g. grandfather George Reed Hedley, son of John Hedley, born c1821 in Gateshead. In 1844 he married Mary Hobson at Monkwearmouth, Durham. Known children of the marriage are Elizabeth Ann, John H, George, Mary, Sarah Jane and James. In 1851 they were living in Monkwearmouth, then relocated to Hartlepool. I have the history of Elizabeth Ann, but nothing of the rest of the family. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

This sounds interesting!!

Catherine Hedley (born 1870) married Jacon Tweedy Lamb. I've got quite a bit of info about the Lamb family (and the Tweedys). They had 6 children. One was Catherine Bilton Hedley Lamb, born 1898 as per earlier e-mail. Their second son was Herbert Alexander Lamb, born 2.2.1896 in Howden Rd, North Shields. He married Eva Hedley (not aware she's any relation) and they had 5 sons.

Does any of this help?

Richard Hedley

Don't think that my bit of the Hedleys are directly related. I've got Catherine Hedley (nee Bilton) born Abt 1850 who had 11 children. I don't know when she died (still living in 1901). Her husband was William Hedley, a mariner, born 1850 died 1890. Theri eldest daughter was Catherine Hedley (born 1870) who married Jacob Tweedy Lamb. She died in 1901. Three of her sisters (including I think Mary Ann - "Minne") went to Australia ariving in June 1926. She had 6 children, including Catherine Bilton Hedley Lamb, born 1898, died 1982. I don't know if any of this sound familiar. It is quite possible that your Catherine is descended from another of the children of William/Catherine, or even one of William's brothers. There were a number of them!!

Richard Hedley

Richard, I have 14 William Hedley's in my tree and I can't find a connection at all to you or anyone else on this thread. Interesting, you'd think there would be, but considering the naming patterns year ago, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

However, it does look like the other posts on this thread could be connected to you though.

Nancy
I have just started researching my family tree and my Grandfather was Terence Edward Hedley, whose fathers name was William Hedley and mother name is Mary or Mary Ann, They moved to Australia from South Shields around 1929 - 1928. There were 7 children but I only have the names of 6, being William, Terence, Frank, Archie, Minnie and Kathleen. I would be very interested in exchanging info with you to see if we have the same family, as there were alot of William Hedley's in that area.

Mel Crowe (nee Hedley)

Also I am fairly sure that my Mary Hedley died in NJ by 1840.

Loved your website. Very thorough and informative.

Sally

Some internet postings show her as Mary HEDLEY, however, there is no documentation for this information.

Do you have any information on a Mary HEDLEY (b. 1790-1800, d.1830-1840)?
Dear David,
I don't think the Thomas 1864 had any link to your Thomas.
Firstly, most of our Hedley's originated in Newburn, Northumberland.
Thomas1864's father John Hedley (1833-1876) came down to Sheffield from Newburn. He was a file-cutter.
His father was William Hedley 1812 also a file-cutter. His father was Richard Hedley 1790-1824,husbandman,Newburn. His father was William Hedley 1748-1818, grocer in Newburn and through second marriage to Elizabeth Fletcher.
His father was Thomas 1722-1787 also of Newburn. I think this is as far back as been proved.
I have not, personally, come accross a Gateshead connection, though Tynemouth and Earsdon are linked.

Dear David,

I am totally confused. I, and the rest of the group, have Thomas Hedley 1864(married to Sarah Eliz Millin) as the son of John Hedley 1833 and Caroline Bradley
We have John as the son of William 1812 and William was the son of Richard 1790 married to Alice Hudson. Richard was the 6th son of William 1748 and Elizabeth Fletcher.

We have Oswald and his brothers coming down from the marriage of William (1748) and Ann Atkinson, to whom he was never married. She was the sister of his first wife Jane who died 1778 and men were not then allowed to marry their sisters-in-law.

I have Thomas 1864 birth certificate showing John and Caroline Bradley were his parents.
Was your John Thomas 1888 a printer by trade and did he have twin children ? Leonard and ? sister's name? Was Leonard your father??

I could send you a copy of Thomas 1864 birth certificate and a chart made up of what our group have found. However I think personal emails are made public on this site.
Any ideas how I can do this.
I would love to have a copy of William's will - sound very interesting.
Hope to hear from you,
Arline

Hi there David,

Thanks for the post. I presume you come down from one of Thomas' many children. My mother was the daughter of his eldest daughter, Caroline, who died of TB soon after she was born.

I would love to know your lineage as not managed to trace many of the great aunts and uncles. As a child I knew Elizabeth, May, Dorothy, Ernest and Lily very well. I still have contact with Robert Valentine's daughter, Elsie and her son Wendell, who both live in the USA.
Have you come across our most famous ancestor yet??

There are quite a group of us,who are in contact with one another, and I got so much information from them. They have traced right back to 1699 in the male line. I also have some interesting stuff on Thomas' wife Sarah Elizabeth Millin.

Would love to hear back from you.

Regards,
Arline

Re: HEDLEY, ERNEST MARVIN

Hi
I think I have just added your Hedley family to my family tree.
Arthur Morley Hedley was born in the Guisborough district of England 1875 and his family (father John b1847, mother Elizabeth c1849, grandfather John b1812 and 6 siblings) left England between 1878 and 1880 settling in District 58, Osage, Crawford, Missouri by 1880 Census. Arthur marred Lula and by the 1910 census for Osage they had children named Ida S c1902 Missouri, Ernest C c1904 Missouri and Nellie E c1907 Missouri. They later went on to have Marvin c1911 and Lottie c1914.
My interest is because Arthur's father John had a sister called Jane Ann who was born in 1843 in Middlesbrough and a brother called James b1842 who stayed in England.
Jane Ann Hedley was the first wife of my Gt Gt Grandfather Richard Wilson and they had a daughter called Sarah Ann. Jane Ann died in Middlesbrough 1856 and Richard Wilson got married again. His second wife is called Mary Ann Dobbin. Some time later (we think between 1884 and 1886) Richard took Sarah Ann over to America along with three of the children from his marriage to Mary Ann. They stayed in Braceville, Grundy County, Illinois where Arthur's brother Ernest b1876 had settled for a time. Sadly, it was there that Richard Wilson met his death some 11 months after arriving in America - he was either murdered and left for dead on the railway line or was knocked down and killed as he walked along the railway line. Richard's children returned to England (though we believe one - Isabella Frances Wilson - may have stayed on in America). Sarah Ann Wilson married in Middlesbrough shortly after they returned and went on to have five children. Those children and Sarah Ann would be relatives of Ernest and his father Arthur.
I would love to know more about what happened to the Hedley family, where they settled, who they married, if any stories of Richard Wilson and his family was passed down through the Hedley's etc. so if you can help, it would be really appreciated.
Maria

The will of Joshua Hedley of Darlington (and possibly Thirsk earlier) was proved at York in August 1856. I came across this will recently at York whilst looking for one of my Hedley relations.

Joshua had a late brother-in-law, Joseph Bowron, and a sister, Ann Bowron, so he was part of the family being enquired about some years ago.

Joshua had nephews
Joseph Bowron of Middlesborough
John Baker of Thirsk and
James Baker of York.

He also had a sister, Eleanor. His brother, Hartas, and the 2 sons of his sister Mary Thistlewaite lived in America in 1850 when the will was written.

An LDS member's info. on IGI tells us that Joshua was the son of James Hedley and Sarah Hartas - hence the Hartas Hedley refered to above.

I hope these notes help someone!

Perhaps in return someone would tell me where I would find the names of the parents of a Thomas Hedley who was killed in Wrekenton, near Gateshead in a mining accident in 1843 and who might have had a brother Andrew who was born in Jamaica. I don't ask much!

David Richardson.

Hello!

I am very interested in the recent correspondence about Hedleys which started in Sheffield and then went up to the North East.

My forebear, Thomas Hedley was born about 1810 - place unknown - and was killed in 1843 in a mining accident in Wrekenton, Gateshead, County Durham, leaving a wife and three young girls.

In my quest for Hedleys I recently came across an 1827 Act of Parliament about the will of a spinster bequeathing a share of her estate to a James Hedley, then aged 7, son of James Hedley a glasscutter of Sheffield.

Is the Thomas born in Sheffield in 1864 part of that family?

Secondly, in the correspondence there has been a reference to 10 generations of Hedleys - I infer from the NE of England. Would someone be as kind as to list these 10 generations?

Many thanks.

David Richardson.

Dear Linda and Bob,

Perhaps I can add to your recent discussion?

I'm interested in Hedleys who might have a Jamaican connection as one of my Hedleys - Andrew Duncan Hedley - says that he was born in Jamaica in about 1814. Perhaps they had an Elsdon connection.

I have had help searching Jamaican records and find
"Hedley, William, of the 10th Regiment and Jane Keelly, spinster, m 5/20/1790 in St. Catherine by Revd. Alexander Cumine, D.D. rector.B0080, II, p. 176."
and
"Hedley, William. CC (Margaret Charlotte) Hanover 1/5/1791, born 27/2/1791. Wife Jean. 10th Regiment."

The 10th Regiment would have been a British Regiment stationed in the island.

When I found the Rothbury William and Jane having children later I realised that the Jamaican family had come back* to Rothbury. *The BT says that William was a native of Rothbury.

They also had a William christened on the 12th August 1798 in Rothbury.

What's a Keelly, Kealey, Halley between late 18th C and early 19th C friends?

There's a slight fly in the ointment. The Bishop's Transcripts for Rothbury show that Ann was their first daughter but the Jamaican intelligence shows that their first child was Margaret Charlotte. Perhaps she died?

A trade directory of about 1828 shows William as a tinman.

From Rothbury to Jamaica and back! Wow! And a bride born in South Carolina!

I trust this helps your studies.

Now, .............. do you know about any Hedleys born in Jamaica or, specifically, about an Andrew Duncan Hedley or a Thomas Hedley (1810 ish?) Surely one good turn deserves another!

Best wishes,

David Richardson,
Derby.

Hello Arline,

Nice to hear form you, thanks for the reply.

Yes, my grandfather was John Thomas - eldest son I believe. B 1888. Did you know Caroline was known as Carrie?

I have many original documents along with copies from the probate archives.

I have a copy of the will of William Hedley died 1888 (son of Puffing Billy William) Hard to decipher but very interesting.

I have very recent photos of the family plot at Newburn - the gravestones of William (Puffing Billy)and his wife Frances (nee Dodd), and others also.

There is a memorial there erected by one of the 4 sons.
The most telling fact is that 'black sheep' Oswald (our GG Grandfather) is never mentioned.

There is some reference in the will mentioned above - of making sure Oswalds son (Thomas 1834) and his children - of which Thomas 1864 is one - are to be taken care of, but Oswald is again not mentioned.
William had inherited from both of his other brothers George Died 1886 and Thomas Died 1877. All 3 other brothers never married - only Oswald did - hence our existence.

The will refers to Thomas 1834 having a brother Edward (another one to be 'taken care of') which I have yet to locate.

I am just starting to collate what I have onto this website and Genes Reunited - they are available for you to see if you wish. I can send photos as mentioned above of Newburn family burial plot, along with family plaques which are in Lanchester - the church nearest to Burnhopeside Hall.

Please forgive me if you already know all of this.

Regards
David Hedley

Hedley in New York

I have traced an Amos Hedley to sailing to New York in 1906 and his family following in 1907 - Would someone be able to look up the 1910-1920-1930 census for me. I found the index to the family in 1910 and in 1920 Amos is on his own. Would love to hear from anyone searching this name
Regards
Patricia
