Hi Judy,

Glad that you could identify the photos! I am curious though, have you seen previous photos of these people, so that you could line them up with your family? The reason I ask is that the names/initials and state they were found in (Tennessee) line up with names/locations in my family tree also. I have a James Hefley with a brother named Daniel, all from Tennessee, so "Uncle Jim" could possibly be my James Hefley. While it's a longshot that this is true, I hadn't ruled it out until I saw your post, so I wanted to check with you to see how you determined these pictures were your family. Thanks for your help!! All the best.

Natasha

We are talking about the same Hefleys. Virginia was my great grandmother. I am in the process of moving and I have alot of the information in boxes some where around here that tells more of the family. Dennis Key my first cousin has the hefleys all the way back to the boat they came over on. When I get a chance I will get that from him, I have it some place but he will have it readily available. I know who Albert was and they all lived around Charlston Ark. There is a cemetary there where alot of them are buried. They moved from Ark to Cartersville Ok, which is close to Keota Ok Not sure how many of them moved there but the town of Keota was laid out by some of our relatives and the football field is named after some more. I would appreciate seeing the picture. You can email it to me at jerrymoran@windstream.net thanks for your information

Hi Mike,

I have a James Hefley, born 1821 in TN, died between 1866 and 1870 in TX or AR. Based on the migration pattern, I suspect we are talking about the same person. James Hefley is my 3rd great grandfather. I have information on his descendants and spouse, but basically no information on his ancestry. Please let me know if you are interested in what I have, as I'm happy to share. I would be interested in any information you are willing to share, also. Thanks!! :)

Natasha

Hi there, I have James Hefley (have never heard of the "William" name before, but perhaps we are talking of the same person?) as my 3rd great grandfather. One of his 8 children is Virginia Hefley, perhaps your great grandmother? I descend from his son Albert Perry Hefley, born 30 May 1860. What other information do you have on this family?

As far as going to Oregon, the migration that I have is James was born in TN and died in either Texas or Arkansas. His first 3 kids (Martha, Missouris and Virginia) were born in Arkansas, and his last 5 (Albert Perry, Columbus Leander "Lum", Louisa Jane, Alice and Nelson) were born in Texas.
Albert (my family) married a girl from Texas and must have moved to Arkansas, as all 6 (?) children were born in Arkansas.
Albert's son James Austin Hefley was born in 1883, got married sometime before 1905, and had 3 kids, all born in Arkansas. James Austin died in Arkansas.
James Austin's daughter Helen Edra Hefley was born in 1905 in Arkansas. She must have moved to Montana prior to 1937, as she was married to Heil Jerome Bronson and had her one daughter, Helen Kathleen, all in 1937 in Montana. Helen Kathleen was my grandmother. Helen Edra's husband died in Montana in 1970. Helen Edra then moved to Coos Bay, OR with her daughter Helen Kathleen, husband Frank Perkins, and 3 children. Helen Edra died in Coos Bay, OR. Helen Kathleen and Frank Perkins are also laid to rest in Coos Bay, OR.

Hope that clears up any confusion about the migration to Oregon. Would love to learn any info you have on this family.
If interested, I have a photo that I believe is James Hefley (or William James Hefley if we are talking about the same person). Take care!

In the 1980's we received a letter from Mrs. McKinsey.
That is awesome. Your James Milton is my James Milton. His son Chester Leslie Hefley is the father of Milton Adolphus Hefley is the Father of Bobby Race Hefley is the Father of my Father Clifton Joe Hefley.

Chester Leslie Hefley had four sons. Milton, J.C. Charles, and William. He married Emma Elaina Smith of Austin, Texas on Aug 02, 1905

Here is some info from another Hefley connection.

Notes on James Milton Hefley: United with the Lutheran Church at 16 years of age. Moved to Texas after marriage in 1863. With his wife Laura, he chartered a car on the train to Dallas, Texas, then traveled by wagon to Stephens County. They camped on land just South of what is known now as LaCasa, Texas. They built a small log cabin house. He prepared the land to farm and hunted wild game to provide meat for the family. Helped to organize the M. E. church in 1878. While working with the horses, he was kicked in the stomach by a horse. After two days of intense suffering, he died. His obituary read, "In his death, our church has lost one of the best members and Stephens County one of its best citizens."

Thanks for the info. Let me know if any of this lines up with your tree.
I'm answering an old query. Samuel B. Heffley fought as a Kentucky sharpshooter in the Battles of Orleans under Major General Andrew Jackson. It appears that Samuel's children spelled their name with 1 "f". He married Elizabeth Mathis in Bardstown, KY in 1821. He died 8/13/1865. They had 8 children. Please send your email and I will send you a link to my Heffley tree with 5,000 relatives and lots of info.

It all started with Johann Karl Haffelee (1715-1761) when he came from Germany in 1737. Variations of the name:
Johan Carl Haffele
Johans Carol Hefley
Johann Carl Haffele
John Carl Haffelee
Johan Karl Haefel
Johan Carl Haffelee (name on passenger list)

Bob Heffley
Heffleys@Yahoo.com
Hefleys of Arkansas, Tennessee & Texas

I am looking for any information on a James Hefley, born 1821 in TN. He married Susanne Parker (b. 7 feb 1829, d. 2 feb 1906) and they had 8 children. I have traced my lineage on this line as far back as James, and the only further information I can get is that his mother might have been named Elizabeth and is possibly from NC.

This family migrated from Tennessee to Texas and then to Arkansas, and finally to Oregon. I'd appreciate any help in tracing this line back further. Thanks!

Hello Dorothy--I'm new at this but do you know Cedar Jim's son's names that remained with him in Hartshorn. I have been to a home in Hartshorn that was owned by my Grandfather Thomas (Dewey) Hefley. He was willed that home from his brother or Uncle --I'm not sure of the lineage but you may be able to help there if you have the names. My father(Kenneth John Hefley) recently passed away in Vegas and I remember a ranch in Hartshorn that was rented out for cattle grazing there by my grandfather's lineage. Does this help ??

There are a number of Levi Hefleys in my line too, which I trace back to Adam Hefley, b. 1774 in Rowan Co., NC. That would be about the time John Hefley was born, also in NC.
I am a Hefley descendant too. In fact, I was born in Litchfield. Lillie Mae Hefley, sister of William Turner Hefley (see below) was my g-grandmother.

I can answer some of the questions:

Blanche Hefley (b. Oct 18, 1899 d. Nov. 6, 1985) married Ralph Weatherford on Nov. 1, 1920. He died in 1968. Blanche was the daughter of William Turner Hefley and Anna Isabel Conley. (There was a lot of Hefley-Conley intermarriage.)

Someone mentioned Celia Hefley too. She was also a granddaughter of William Turner H. and Anna Conley through her father Charles Hefley.

I've posted the ancestry of William T. Hefley on my website at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~quixote/He...

Let me know how else I can help.

yes there were a few Hefleys is Illinois. Barbara and her 6 children: paul, rick, sandy, joy, john and deana. Paul is my father, and his grandmother died a couple of years ago in Illinois. From the story that I was told, the Hefleys immagrated from Europe and made up the last name. Supposedly we are all related in some sort of way. Most of the Hefleys on my side of the family now live in Virginia.

Melanie Ann Hefley Leake

Don, It was nice hearing back from you. I was wondering if it would be possible to ever find my great-grandmother on my mother's side.....my grandmother was born Mary Elizabeth Dalton/Daulton, she was born 12 Sept 1892, in
Halls Gap, Lincoln Co., Kentucky. Her father was Henry Shelby Dalton/Daulton, born 15 Sept 1851, in Somerset, Pulaski Co., Kentucky. No one has any idea who his wife was, my great-grandmother. It seems her last child was born in 1905, and my great-grandfather was widowed by 1910. So no one ever talked about her, and her name never came up....then the family moved to Illinois. I have been told her name was Josephine Burket/Berket. But I can't find any thing on her, not even in the Census....Do you have any idea where I might be able to learn something about her....I think she died in Pulaski Co., but don't know where to begin or go...can you help me, or give me some idea where to begin....Thank You so very much. jnherlcrafts@msn.com
Judy Herl, Phoenix, Arizona

I have all the names for William Turner's family and pictures if you are interested...
The reason I was going to e-mail you, was to let you know
I have a very good picture of your Great-Grandmother & my Grandfather (Lillie Mae & William Turner) and I also have
a copy of the newspaper article of your Great-Grandfather's
(George Conley) Train Accident in 1919. Both my mother's side of the family come from Kentucky. I would love to hear from you sometime. The pictures that you posted, I have pictures of their headstones, now I have a face to go with the headstones, I thank-you for that..... jnherlcrafts@msn.com
Judy Hefley Herl, Phoenix, Arizona

Re: Old Hefley Family Photos found.

My father's mother was a Hefley but I don't know if she was related to these Hefley people. Her father was Mal Edward Hefley born in TX about 1855. I believe his father was Philip but have not found a definite link. He married Martha A. Cottrell who was from AR. My grandmother's name was Maud Rose Hefley born 10 Dec. 1879 in Ellis Co. TX.

My mother was a Grubbs and her ancestors came from Kentucky. I wondered if you might have information on them. The earliest definite ancestor I have is Benjamin M. Grubbs. He and his son John Thomas were supposedly among the earliest settlers in the part of KY known as "Jackson's Purchase". John Thomas married Jane Duncan from Calloway Co. where her family was prominent. Their oldest son William Boyd married Anne Utley Wade (daughter of Hon. Vincent A. Wade a member of the KY Legislature). Their son Thueston Ulayous was my great-grandfather. I would appreciate any information you have.

June Workman Cheema
jwcheema@comcast.net

My great grandfather was Mal Edward Hefley who came from Texas but did live in OK at one time. He was born in about 1854. He married M.A. (Martha) Cottrell in 1874 in Ellis Co, TX. In the 1910 census he lived in Haskell Township, Tillman, OK with his wife Mollie and his son Walter. One of his children, James Riley Hefley is in the 1910 census in 1-Wd Lawton, Comanche, Ok. I can't find James Riley after that. Mal came back to Texas before the 1920 census and was in Henderson County. Walter was Mal's son by his second wife Jane Langston. Walter was in TX in 1920 but moved back to OK and lived there the rest of his life.

Is there anyone out there that knows who is the father of Tilman Hefley? I would like proof of his birthdate and parentage. Supposedly it is August 30, 1815 in Cabarrus County, NC. I am looking for some kind of proof.
