I am researching the Clemens Heidenreich family. He arrived in 1847 on the Schmittmuhle. Is this the same family? His wife is named Catherine. They had 6 children: Mary, John, Fannie, Clemens, Louis and Joseph. The lines I have researched are Clemens, Louis (my ancester) & Joseph.

Sharon Board

Hi,
This is probably very far-fetched, but my grandmother at Katarina Gruenwald at age 17 or 18 married Bernhard Heidenreich (date unknown, but approximately 1912 in Munich.)

He came from a "good family" and was an opera singer who performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City on tour. He did not, however, emigrate to the United States Photos exist, (two in his opera costumes) but I could find no record on the internet. That's all we know.

They had two children, Erna and Erika (my mother, now deceased) Heidenreich. He died of consumption in his 30s.

I wonder if there is any connection.

Alexandra

Please send me copy of obit. I'm not certain where this fits into my family, but my mother's grandfather, August Friedrich Heydenreich, in Germany c1819(was a coppersmith); he came to New York City around 1846 and lived in Brooklyn until his death in 1873. His brother Johann Tobias Heidenreich arrived in NYC but went on to Pennsylvania to live and work. The family does not know why each spelled their last name differently, but I can assure you they are brothers as I have other notes and correspondence between the families. Looking forward to hearing from you. Irene

The George A. (Adolph) minister at the Waconia Moravian Church was my maternal grandfather. He was born 07 Dec 1871.

His father was Jacob; his Mother was Barbara Biri. I think the brother of Jacob is John (married to Anna).

This would mean that we have two Georges (lst cousins) . . .
assuming the fathers were brothers. Since, as mentioned in my earlier post, the names of John's children were in my grandmother's birthday book, one would think that they were brothers. Also, there is the fact that they lived in Utica together.
And I know that Jacob had brothers . . .although I don't have anything that gives me their names.

I appreciate your reply. I would hope that some of John's descendants could verify this relationthionship.

Dave

It may be that George A. was minister of the Waconia Moravian Church in Waconia Minnesota from 1915-1918 or this may be the wrong George altogether. George is listed as one of John and Anna's children.

My great great Aunt, Louisa FRIEDRICH, b. 1884 married Heinrich Friedrich August HEIDENREICH, b. 17 Sept. 1876, on 23 Sept. 1923 in St. Louis, MO. They had no children, but I am trying to plug his family into my database. His death certificate says he was born in Nashville, Washington CO, IL to Joachim August HEIDENREICH and Caroline MEHLE.

I found this family in the 1880 census (living in Illinois) listed as follows, August, age 48, Caroline, age 42, Henry, age 17, Minnie, age 15, Caroline, age 13 and August, age 5, all born in Prussia.

Does any of this ring a bell with any of you HEIDENREICH researchers? Thanks in advance.

Debbie Christ
St. Louis, MO

Yes, we are indeed related! How nice to hear from you. Very briefly, here's our mutual family:

Our first American immigrant ancestor was Heinrich Gottlieb Heidenreich and his wife Anne Marie Kottkamps, who came to the US in 1847 aboard the brig George Delius, with their adult children, Caspar Heinrich, Anne Marie, and Anna Katherine. Their son Christian Friederich came in 1848 after his release from the German army; and their married daughter and her family, Anne Marie and Christian Friederich Knebelkamp came in 1853.

My direct ancestor was Caspar; your direct ancestor was Christian Friederich.

Heinrich and his sons Caspar and Christian Friederich all purchased land near each other on the Belleville prairie; Caspar's land abutted the church lands, Heinrich's was across the road, and Christian Friederich's was to the east a short distance away.

Christian Friederich married Louisa Meyer in 1849, and they had one son, Frederick, born 1852. Sometime before 1880, Christian Friederich and Louisa lost their land and moved to Okawville. Their son Frederick married Caroline Koenig in 1876, and they had seven children. The sixth child, Louis W., born in 1891, is your grandfather; he married Martha Hohlt in 1921. Louis and Martha had eight children; your mother, Bertha Emma, was the fifth, born in 1928. I have no other information on your branch of the family past the birthdates of Louis and Martha's children, which were given to me by a Tina LaBusier - do you know her?

By separate e-mail, I'll send you an invitation to join the Yahoo! group heidenreichreunion, which has a lot of information, photos, marriage licenses, etc.

Welcome, cousin! This is exciting! Looking forward to knowing you and trading family information.

Carrie

Heidenreichs of Utica, New York - 1880 Census

I am looking for any descendents of John C. and Anna Heidenreich. In the 1880 census for Utica, New York, the children of this couple are listed as: (some dates have been verified from other sources)

Mary - Age 22
Edward (Eddie) - Listed Age 19, but he was born 5 Feb 1858
Charles - born 27 Oct 1864
Frederick - born 4 Feb 1870
William - Age 8
John - Age 6
George - born 9 Jun 1876
Hattie (not Addie) - born 1 Feb 1879

I beleieve John (and wife, Anna) is my great grandfather, Jacob's brother.

The children with the actual birth date listed above were listed in my grandmother's (maiden name Reusswig) Heidenreich birthday book, so I am certain they are family to my great grandfather, Jacob.

At the time of Jacob's death (railroad accident) in 1877, it is mentioned in notes from my aunt, Dorothy Heidenreich, that Jacob's brothers came to take care of Jacob's 4 children, but Jacob's wife, Barbara (Biri), would not give them up.

I hope someone recognizes some of these people.

Boes/Heidenreich

I am having problems finding a town of origin for my Heidenreichs.

My great grandfather, Frederick Boes (5/1861 to 4/1927) was the son of Gerhard Boes and Anna Maria Heidenreich. He had several siblings that I know of: Victoria, Rosalia, Mary Rita, and Adam. All were born in Germany and trickled over, one by one, as adults, settling in Collinsville, Madison, IL and Michael, Calhoun, IL. I have no evidence that the parents immigrated. They were Catholic, and from Hesse.

There are several other Heidenreichs in the area that appear to be related because they are godparents to various of Fred's children and those of his siblings:

Clemens b. abt. 1828, wife Catherine Schneider, Collinsville, IL.

Edward b. 1841, wife Mary Elizabeth Roehl, Michael, IL.

Veronica b. 1831, married Ulrich Roehl, Michael, IL.

Each had a daughter named Veronica Sophronia or Sophronia Veronica. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Thank you,

Ann Kroeger

I don't know if Leonard came and lived in Marshall with my Grandparents. I was born in 1922 and remember the name, as coming to visit in my younger years. I don't have any idea how he would be related. I am the oldest grandson and there isn't anyone else in the family who would know anything about this relationship. Walter

Friederich Heidenreich had 3 daughters also.
I remember Leonard Kritchgau visiting my grandparents, I spent a lot of time there in my younger years as they lived around the corner from my home. I think Leonard was from Albion and was probably a Lutheran. My Grandfather was Lutheran pastor at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Marshall for 50 years, he lived in Church parsonage and didn't rent.

On June 11, 1847, the Heidenreichs arrived at the port of Phildelphia from Germany. To celebrate 160 years in the United States, we're planning a family reunion at the original Heidenreich farm and church near Millstadt/ Centreville, Illinois (by Belleville) on the weekend of June 9, 2007. A Yahoo Group has been set up and will be the place for information, networking, and brainstorming. Check the family tree within to see if you're related to any of these families, who are from St. Clair County, Illinois -- surnames included are Aimo, Becker, Beichert, DeMange, Frank, Fuhs, Grahmann / Grohmann, Heidenreich, Hoffman / Hoffmann, Hughes, Keck, Knefelkamp / Knebelkamp, Linne, McBride, McGarvy, Miers, Mueller, Obernagel, Odum, Poegemiller, Rieso, Schrieber, Schwoebel, Tiemann, and Wright. There are historic photos, copies of marriage licenses, ships' passenger lists, etc. Please come visit.

Thanks Carrie. Since that posting, I've been able to trace their origins further back to Mecklenburg, as well as their imigration to the U.S., arriving in New York on 19 October 1882 aboard the steamship Wieland from Hamburg/Havre.
From other information, it also appears that two of Christoph's brothers (Hans Wilhelm and Johann Christian) emigrated from Mecklenburg in 1883. They, or their relatives, eventually ended up in the areas of Kindred, ND and Lester Prairie, MN, respectively.

George - Have you been in touch with Don Holtz? He is the great-grandson of Johann Heidenreich who settled in Lester Prairie, MN (after first living in the Walnut, IL area). I need to have some more research done in Germany, since there is conflicting information as to whether or not Christoph was actually a brother of Johann and Hans Wilhelm, or just a cousin. Christoph's obit said that they were brothers. Feel free to contact me directly via email [losdak@cs.com]. All in all,one way or the other, we can eventually trace the family back to the 1600's.

Hi Johannna - WOW is this a small world. I have just been reading some old letters (1988/1989) that I received from some relatives of yours - Harriet Heydenreich Covert and Eleanor Heydenreich DeWald. I have also been in touch with other relatives of yours in Seattle, WA and Bloomsburg/Washingtonville, PA. All of these folks were descended from Tobias Heydenreich, a brother of your G GF August Heydenreich.

I also have a 17 page typed but undated narrative manuscript about the Tobias Heydenreich family for the period 1832 to about 1895. This manuscript was dedicated to the aunt Rosa Heydenreich Grossmann by Harriet Heydenreich Covert and Martha Heydenreich Smith.

I have recently located a distant cousin in Germany. He has my G GF Karl Heinrich Heydenreich, born in 1816 in Dresden listed in the 1901 edition of the Heydenreich Family history and genealogy book which he is now updating. I have sent him charts for all the Heydenreich descendants that I know are descendants of Karl Heinrich Heydenreich. I have asked him to check the 1901 book to see if Tobias or his parents are listed there (William Heinrich Heydenreich and Dorothea Thomas.) So, we MAY be related.

I also have a handwritten family tree showing August Heydenreich and Martha Schroeder, their children, grand children and great grandchildren. (Surnames: Geib, Haug, Haake, Milligan, Mollers, Crawford and Fogg.)

Where were you born and where do you live?

My branch of the family started out in NYC, NY but I know some members moved to NJ and CA before 1900 and some other members left NYC but I do not know where they went! We had family living in NYC from 1850 until the death of my mother in 1979. I was born in NYC.

Stay In Touch!

Best Regards,

Jim Heydenreich
Lakehurst, NJ

In looking at Holzhauer inquiries, I read the letter from Fred Griswold concerning Amherst OH and names he found at the Cleveland St. Cemetery: Excerpt
"When I found your site on the internet, you filled in the information about John Newton Holzhauer and his line. John Newton is buried in the Brownhelm cemetery with his wife Christine. His father, John C. Holzhauer, is buried in the Cleveland Street Cemetery in Amherst not more than 20 feet from a bunch of other Holzhauers. I think you saw on the tombstone for John C. Holzhauer the name of his wife, Ellen Springer. That is why I suspected the maiden name of Ellen was a Springer....."

Ellen Springer was my maternal grandmother. She is buried with John C. Holzhauer, her first huband. She later married my father's father, thus her name became Ellen Springer. Her maiden name is Martin.
(Parts of that family are called Merthe, the correct name. Martin was a result of immigration misunderstanding of English.)
Nancy Springer Spiegelberg
129 Milan Ave B1
Amherst OH 44001-1464
nancy@godthoughts.com
