I, too, am looking for relatives of Helfrichs that went to PA, but the PITTSBURGH area. I only have a Joseph, born 1867 in Germany, arrived in the US in 1888 or 89, married Magdalene Ann (Lena) Seethaler in 1892, had Andrew, Magdalene, Katherine, Marcella and Margaret. And I have lots on those children of his and their descendants.

Mabel is my paternal grandmother (she died before I was born). She was born Mabel Young and married three times: first to Mortimore Potter Robertson; then to George Helfrich (my grandfather - also died before I was born); and then Dewey Ralph Dedrick.
She had 2 children, Douglas with Mortimore Robertson; and George (my father), with George Helfrich.

I'm not sure who the Susan is - maybe a step-daughter.

Anyway, please contact me if you get this, would like to share information.

I am looking at a paper at this moment that has the Helfrick's name on it her name is Johannatha Philipina Helfrick-born Abt 1669, Place-Hessen Oberhessen, Dudelsheim, Germany. She was married to George Knauss on Nov,4,1695 and had 5 children.

Bill, Do you have any more info on the one of your Helfrich relatives that went to Pennsylvania? (And/or the Helfrichs of Darmstadt?)

My g, g, grandmother was Pauline B. HELFRICH, born about 1832 in HESSEN, DARMSTADT, emigrated to US in 1850s. She died early 1900s. I'm not certain where she landed, but she married, and lived with in PHILADELPHIA (MANAYUNK), PA, fellow emigre, Theodore BARTH (from Baden) around 1859. Roman Catholic. Pauline had relatives in BALTIMORE, who came to PA to visit. Her children married into LARBIG, MILLER, and KUHN families (all in Philadelphia). Do these people or place names ring any bells? I'm interested in your "colossal list of Maryland Helfrichs." Did "Pat Colvin" respond to your inquiry?
Carolynn

Happy anniversary! I too would be interested in reading it. Though I have not yet gotten deeply into my Helfrich line, reading about that ocean-crossing journey would be of great interest- most of my other lines came over only 20-30 earlier, so this diary will indirectly shed light on a few families while telling his story. Thank you so much for your kind offer. I look forward to reading it.

Meaning & Origins of the Helfrich name

I'm attaching three pages from a document written by Buford Helfrich. You may find these of interest. Also, the following was written by Rev. William A. Helffrich, his son Rev. William U. Helffrich and grandson Rev. Reginald Helfferich.

"GENEALOGY OF THE HELFFRICH FAMILY IN EUROPE

Authentic account of the origin of the Helffrich stock from Biblia Wien, VII, 193.

The stock Helffrich, or as one also finds it written, Helfferich, is recorded in the Vienna family table of the German nobility and is classified under the Franconian knightly and noble stock. According to these records the family had its beginning and origin in the neighborhood of the present Würzburg, (“History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania”, p. 456 adds “…near the present Würzburg, where its castle Herneck stood.” – D.H. 2/2004) where the ancestor of this family lived already in the year 450 (p. Chr. n.), as the head or Duke of Franconian Branch of the Vangionian people.

He was named Baldwin von Helffrich, which means the helpful one, because he stood ready in every need with advice and action.

His wife, was Oliba von Struden, the daughter of a “ebischen” Duke; and he carried in his shield three squares, red, white, and blue, the sign of his office in war or peace. On his helmut was a man with clothing of the same color, with three ostrich plumes of like color on his jeweled Duke’s hat. From this has arisen the arms of the family. Baldwin had only one son, named Edelwald von Helffrich. No descendants are found until the year 935, when there was a Kuns von Helffrich, the only one of his family, who was appointed by King Henry the First, City and Castle Keeper. He was a brave warrior who fought in many famous battles and later was chief captain of the Franconian knighthood. His wife was Judith von Hohenlohe, and he died in 983.

His three sons were Gerald, Winfried and Columban von Helffrich. But the last two entered spiritual orders and died in the Cloister at Fulda.

Gerald removed his belongings from near Würzburg to Sterneck, and married Wunegildies von Charlaris, a French Countess, who had considerable estates in Upper Burgundy. He died in 1040 and left two sons, Theobald and Justus von Helffrich.

Theobald remained on the Franconian property near Würzburg, but his descendants sold it in the Crusades and settled themselves as citizens of Armuth. This line flourishes yet on the Main and the Rhine and in many localities. Justus took the Upper Burgundy property of his mother’s side and he and his descendants lived there peaceably.

About the year 1477, we hear again something about him, when three Upper Burgundy knights named Helffrich and Duke Charles the Bold, went to Switzerland to subdue the Swiss. Two of them found death in the murderous battlefields against the Swiss. One named Hanwald von Helffrich was wounded and taken prisoner by the residents of Luzerne. He had to sell his estate to secure his release and settled at Endliburger-Walds, where he married Josephine von Raffi, and became a man of the country. He died in the year 1512.

The two who were killed left sons, and from this branch flourish now in Burgundy and Lorraine as a noble family.

Hanwald left three sons, of whose descendants in 1767, Hans and Jacob Helffrich still lived. Hans remained in Switzerland, where his descendants flourish. Jacob removed to Wurtemberg and there propagated his branch.

Of the descendants of Theobald Helffrich, they propagated along the Neckar, which flows through the old Pfalz and into the Rhine near Manheim.

They had already under Frederick the Third, joined the Reformed Church.

In the year 1730, there lived in Mosbach on the Neckar, John Peter Helffrich, father of the Rev. Johannes Heinrich Helffrich. John Peter, was Burgomaster in Mosbach, and a member of the Reformed Church there. He was a master harness maker and in good circumstances. He married Anna Margaret, a born Dietz. He had only one son, and died soon after its birth, in the beginning of his fortieth year. His widow later married Inspector P. Helffenstein of Sinsheim.

He lived in Rochester, NY with my grandmother Roxanna White Helfrich and had 3 children, Michael, Marsha and Linda.

I believe he was originally from Pennyslvania, perhaps near Erie. I know he was in world war 2 and wad divorced from my grandmother in the early 1960's or so. I believe he remarried after that and may have had more children.

Any information you might have would be most appreciated.
On January 14, 1772 Rev. Johann Heinrich Helffrich arrived in America on the ship "Rising Sun." This sunday marks the 235th anniversary of his arrival. I, for one, am eternally grateful that he made the journey. If anyone is interested in reading a translation of the diary he kept on his journey I would be happy to send it to you, especially if you are also a descendant of his. It is truly amazing to read about the hardships endured by our immigrant ancestors, and we should all be thankful for their bravery and sacrifice in leaving their homes to come here.

John Helfrich & Magdalena Blank family - Lehigh County, PA

I recently came across proof that Eve Helfrich was a daughter of John Helfrich and Magdalena Blank. There is an original copy at the Lehigh County Historical Society of an Orphan's Court document, dated 4 Sept. 1829 - "Petition of Henry Hisky, one of the sons in law of John Helfrich." This Petition refernces the property of John Helfrich, who died intestate on May 6, 1829 in South Whitehall, PA. Seven children are referenced as well as 7 grandchildren. The children listed are...

George - Stated in the document as being his only son
Catharine - deceased - wife of Daniel Guth
Elizabeth - wife of John Guth
Eve - wife of Henry Hisky
Magdalena - wife of Jacob Guth
Regina (unmarried at the time the document was written)
Lydia - wife of Peter Roth

The grandchildren listed were children of John Helfrich's daughter Catharine and her husband Daniel Guth. They are as follows...

Michael
Anna
Elizabeth
Daniel
Magdalena
Lydia
Catharine

I do not have a copy of the entire document. It was quite large. But it references the division of property after John Helfrich's death.

I recently bought a photo postcard identified on the back as Harry Klingler and Earl Helfrich. I purchased this photo from a PA vintage photo dealer.

I believe this is Henry Homer Klingler, the son of James W., a miller, and Ida E. Harry was born 25 Feb 1884 according to his WWI Draft Application.

Earl Helfrich was born Earl Spencer Helfrich to Pharon and Ellinor Helfrich on 9 Oct 1881 in Snyder Cty, PA. His WWII Card says he is a farmer, age 60, living in Beaver Springs, PA. He died 19 July 1957.

Harry Klingler and Earl Helfrich are enumerated on the same census sheet in the 1910 Census for Spring, Snyder County, PA. I believe they may be first cousins.

I am not related, but I would like to connect this photo to a family member or family researcher. Please contact me if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
