Please contact me directly at FFFMoore@aol.com with your response to my Hellen descendants' query of Feb. 27, 2000.

     Hello,
Long story short-
My name steve helion, what little I know is the same as you basically.
My fathers dad- Jerome John Helion was born in the Bronx.
We are pretty sure his father was born there also; John Helion.
Because of the now recent spelling, and layout of the name,
and what my grandfather had believed, we took it as Irish. Although distinguished from most English last names, the history goes a ways back.
Just recently since living on the East coast me and my wife visited Ellis Island, and a John D. Helion poped up in there records within the time span they were open and took in immigrants. I am not sure if it is Great gramps or not, and if so, with the potatoe famine, Irish fleeing, and what little I have learned about all traditional last names.... it is doubtful to me so far that it is Greek.
But I know my Surname is very rare, and old, hard to trace for the most part, and to our knowledge we are all related. So I tend to wonder if that man listed at Ellis is Great Gramps or not, wether the direct origion is from Greece or if it was the Potatoe Flee!
It would be great to hear from you some time Steven Helion

Re: Hellen Family History

William Hellen m Dorcas Johnson, sister of Thomas Johnson, 1st Governor of Maryland. I believe they eventually went to Fayette Country, PA (near Uniontown). There is a tombstone there, "Thomas Johnson - 1700". I think this was her father not her brother. The Hellen clan have a large area of the main cemetary in Uniontown which shows many names, etc. There is a smaller cemetary that dates back further than the main cemetary where the Johnson stone is. The Hellens were originally a family of sea captains and after the lost of William at sea, Dorcas halted anyone else from going to sea. The Hellens became quite wealthy but in the era of 1900 one of them took off to California with the wealth depriving everyone of their inheritance. My grandfather, Nathaniel Brownfield Frey, Sr, (dod, March 2, 1942) was in line for some of this inheritance.

For at least
the last 5 generations I am decended
from Hellen's living in south west
Cork, near the town of Skull.
Family lore is that we decended from
a French Hugenot named Hellen who
would have arrived in Ireland about 1690.
Our family has first names of Richard,
Francis ( Frank) which seem to be French
Robert would also be French I think.

Regards

Ger Hellen
Kiltrislane
Mitchelstown
Co Cork
IRELAND

I started out by looking for Hellens on Classmates.com. I have met a lot of them but none are related to me as of yet. I found Hellens all the way in England. I was born in Raleigh, NC 1-10-1947. My father was James Henry Hellen born 12-21-1894. Died Oct. 1969. I think my father had a brother. I believe that Bertha, Eugene and possibly Mattie Hellen are relatives. Sorry, I don't know much about my family.

My 3x great grandfather was Robert Hellen born in Cork, Ireland in 1816. Family moved to England about 1840s settled in London. My mother always believed the family were of Greek origin. Robert's son William born about 1848, was the father of my grandfather Roger born 1889. Ring any bells. Tailors by trade. Pat

Hellen family came from England to Calvert Co. Md, then to NC and on to AL. Married into Lavender family. My mother's first name is Hellen. Many of the children carried the name Hellen as their middle name. William Hellen married Rachel Neubold and had daughter Nicia Hellen who married Bryant Lavender. I'm looking for early infor on William and his parents and early info on Bryant and his parents. Time frame is late 1700's andd early 1800's.

Re: Hellen

It may be that my family is linked to yours. I live in London, my Father, Andrew Hellen, was born in London and his brother still lives here also. My grandfather, Samuel Hellen, was also from London, I believe the Stoke Newington area of the East End. We too thought that the family was of greek descent but recently came across a small stately home in Herefordshire called "Hellens". Although this has been owned by a Swedish family since the time of the crusades it actually took its name from a very popular squire who came to run the estate in their absence, I think around the time of the crusades. He was from Jersey, and called "De Helion".

We never thought there was an Irish connection, but if there was a member of the Hellen family who moved to London in the 1840s, this may well be a connection. Can anyone possibly shed any light on this?
