My grandmother's maiden name was Helmlinger. Her father's name was William. She grew up "Down NecK" in Newark, NJ. William was married twice. He had two sons, I believe. Then he married Florence. He had a daughter Florence(my grandmother) and a son Harry. We don't know much about Wm.'s family.

Hi Kate,
I'm one of your relative on William Helmlinger's side. Here's how I fit in and what I know.......
William (my GGF), was married to Catherine Phelan (my GGM). They had 2 sons: Edmond (my grandfather), and Franklin. Catherine passed away, not sure when (1910ish?). William married again to Florence and that's your side of the family. I've been in touch a few times with relatives on your side of the family.
Anyway, my grandfather Edmond and his wife Freda had 2 sons: Edmond Jr. (who died of polio at age 10 in 1924?) and my Dad, Wallace in 1926.
Contact me if you have any info or need info from me. I'm pretty new to this, but I'll help.

Jacob HELMLINGER, b. 1816, died circa 1851 in OH. either in Allen ,Shelby or Auglaize Co., most likely. His second wife was Elizabeth LEWIS, who was born ca. 1827 in OH. She married Jacob in 1843 in Shelby Co.,OH. After Jacob's death, the children were scattered and Elizabeth remarried in Feb. 1859 to a Frederick RINEHART in Shelby Co.,OH. In 1860 she and Frederick were living in New Knoxville, Auglaize Co.,OH. Living with them were his son Frederick and her two daughters Sophia and Elizabeth HELMLINGER. Where were her sons Milton(who was bapt. as Michael) and John Louis? Desire correspondence with anyone with knowledge of this family.

Joy,
Thanks for the reply. Sophie's birth in 1780 would equate in time line to my GGgf, Johann Philipp Helmlinger, born 1778 in Ingwiller. His father was also a Johann Phillip, born 1730 in Ingwiller. So any connection would be before that time. I do have my line back to Bathasar 1609-1679 in Alsace. His sons are known to have moved to Ingwiller as his grandchildren were born there.
I have come across Jean Jacque Helmlinger several times but have not looked into where our ancestry crosses. I will do that soon and let you know what I find out. I have been told that there are 4 distinct lines of Helmlingers in France/Germany with a bit of Hungarian thrown in. They all at some time probably originated from the village of Helmlingen on the Rhine river, east bank. There is a record of a Helmlinger in Strasbourg in the mid 1500's from the village of Helmlingen. Haven't gotten to that point yet to make any connections.
Thank you again for the film numbers. I am new to this hobby. I really only took an active interest after a construction accident allowed me this year to look into things that I never seemed to have time for before. If you get to the point of going forward with Helmlingers, let me know
Joy,
My main focus has been Fredrich Helmlinger born Apr 12, 1821 or 1822 in Ingwiller, died Jan 11, 1906 in East Orange, NJ. He came to America in 1859 as had other members of the family. Haven't looked for all of them yet. He had served 17 yrs. in the French Cavalry including the Crimean War or at least rumor has it. He then served in the 1st NJ Cavalry during the Civil War.
I have an uncle in NJ with much of the family papers. As soon as I recover enough to make a trip up there, he has agreed to sit down with me.
Thanks for the Crimean sites as that was one of my areas of search before I got sidetracked by a 30 reunion with my old Army unit whom I had not seen in 30 yrs. That's a whole nother matter! Keep in touch. You may certainly contact me off list if you find anything that might not be of interest to the forum.
TOM

I doubt that we are closely related but I also have Helmlinger's from Ingwiller. The best way to find more data on them is to rent the microfilm through the Family History Center and browse. I got somewhat good at deciphering the Alsacian (French mixed with German, usually in German script with a sprinkling of Latin thrown in.) so if I can help, I'd be happy to. The thing that was the most helpful to me was a book called "If I can you can Decipher German Records" by Edna Bentz, which I think you can order directly from the author at jdbentz@prodigy.net.
I actually have the films you need in my catalog of films to order when I get a chance. These are the film numbers.
Ingwiller civil birth records: FHC INTL Film # 745992 has births from 1793 to 1820
Ingwiller civil birth records: FHC INTL Film # 745993 has births from 1820 to 1853.
Ingwiller civil marriage records: FHC INTL Film # 745996 has marriages from 1825 to 1862.

Here are my Helmlinger's:

Sophie Elisabeth Helmlinger (my GGGgm) b. 3 Dec 1780, Ingwiller
m. 1 Mar 1801, Ingwiller, Jean Philippe Moritz
d. 22 Dec 1805

Sophie was the daughter of Jean Jacques Helmlinger & Catherine Madeleine Ehrstein. I have no further info on them yet because I've been working on other lines.

Bon chance, Joy
