About me and my
HELMS connection: My last male
HELMS ancestor is my great-grandfather, Andrew
Jackson HELMS, born 1 Aug 1871 or 1 Aug 1872 in
Barbour Co., Alabama. died 27 Jun 1933 in
Houston Co., Alabama. He was the sixth child of John
Jackson HELMS and Frances Ann
DEES. He married (1) Ella
HICKS, 28 Dec 1893. They had five children. He was widowed in 1912 and married (2) ca. 1913, Bisha “Ossie” DOUGLAS. They had four children. My grandmother and her youngest sister are the only surviving children, both of whom were of the second marriage.
My genealogical studies began officially in late January 1976 and much of that time was pursuing my southern U.S. lines, including my
HELMS line. After Jimmy
CARTER was elected
President of the United States I would tease my mother that her mother looked like Jimmy
CARTER. Within a year of my saying that I learned that he and my maternal grandmother are in fact, cousins through the
HELMS family Much of my
HELMS research was done before 1982 and consisted of searching the U.S. Census schedules of
Alabama and
North Carolina. This was followed by my visiting the two courthouses in
Barbour County,
Alabama and recording date from the probate and marriage records. I also have met some of my grandmotherÂ’s second cousins who still live in
Barbour Co., near Clio. And my most memorable moment during that visit was being chased by a wile boar after climbing over a chicken wire fence which surrounded the old
HELMS Cemetery near Clio. I still laugh about that experience. Also, during that visit, they shared information on the older family members as well as information relating to their more immediate families. Much of my work was shared with Gerald C. Helms,
Matthews,
North Carolina. Gerald graciously included it in his last publication, “Helms Descendants, 1720-1991,” by Gregath Publishing,
Cullman,
Alabama, 1992 which he collaberated with Sara
Myers and William E. “Bill”
HELMS.
