Helton is first mentioned in English records in 1166 A.D. in relation to Romanus, Knight of Helton, who held three Knight's Fees in the County Palatine of Durham, England, where Hylton Castle now stands. It relates to the Manor of Helton, in the Barony of Appleby in Westmoreland, England

His son, Alexander de Helton, is expressly named as one of the barons of the Bishoprick of Durham, in a charter of Roger de Kibblesworth in 1180 A.D. - This charter is now in the Durham Cathedral, England.

Alexander's eldest son, William inherited Hylton Castle and estates, whilst his second son Robert de Helton, married the daughter of Rd. Bacon Esquire of Westmoreland and inherited Helton Bacon, half of the manor of Helton.
The other half of the manor became known as Helton Fleckett, and was inherited by the Washington family, ancestors of George Washington, who became First President of the United States of America.
SOURCE; HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THE COUNTY PALATINE OF DURHAM by ROBERT SURTEES written 1825-40.

We will be visiting HELTON, the original village known as Helton Fleckett on Sunday 8th August 2010.

A full itinerary is detailed below, although all days are optional and all costs are shared. Anyone who simply wishes to join in the full family reunion at Hylton Castle on the morning of Friday 6th August 2010 is welcome to do so and it's free of charge.
