She was born in May 1836 I believe.

Hope to hear from someone soon!!

PS..I looked up the name Joachim and understand that it is German and translates to English as Jack?

Hi, thanks for the reply, my gr-gr grandfather Christian Hemme was born in Hanover Germany around 1835 and came to the US around 1859. I can't seem to find anything else. It said he was a taylor in the immigration record but that was new to me, he was a farmer in Iowa when he was married. He was a small man according to the murder article I read. I can't find anything else about his parents, brothers, sisters etc. My dad said a lot of the Hemme records were lost in the Chicago fire. At least that is what he was told. Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
I responded to the e-mail from Ancestry but I thought I'd post here, to be sure you get my reply.
Did your gr-grandfather stay in Germany, or did he come to the States, and if so, which one? I have made zero progress in tracking down my Hemme ancestors. It doesn't help that my gr-grandmother Hemme married into an equally secretive Steffens family that also disappears from one generation to the next!
Hope to hear from you again soon.

I read your post about Hemme born in Hanover in 1832. My great-great grandfather was born in Hanover in 1835 so I am wondering if they could be brothers. I can't seem to get anywhere with the Hemme line except my great-great Grandfather (whose name is Christian) was murdered in 1887. His wife is Henrietta Mundfrom (whose nephew murdered Christian), and he had three girls, one was Emma who is my great grandmother. Let me know if this is any help to you. thanks.
Hi - saw your message and would like to have more information. I am searching for any descendents of Jeffey Lynn Hemme, born around 1945. His father was Melvin Hemme and his mother Elda (Brekehoeft) Hemme. They lived in Missouri. Melvin Hemme would probably have been born some time in the early 1900s and his mothers name was Martha who would have been born between 1880-1890. I have family photographs of these people and other mementos which ended up in Ct. I would like them to go to any family descendent who might be interested in them. Regards Anita

I think I've responded to another message left by you on another board - but let's do this anyway!

Perhaps the family conflict is the reason I can't find out very much about my branch of the Hemme family. I know they were in Charleston, SC in the 1880's-90's, but that's the extent of my knowledge. My great-grandmother was Marie Hemme Steffens, and she had an aunt Rose Hemme. I just found a Rose Hemme today from Hungary....I'm so confused!

If you have any information I'd love to hear from you.
Jeannie Osborn Cordes
August Hemme

Looks like this board has not been active for awhile but I'll add my two cents anyway. Have just been looking up August Hemme who lived in California, and found some information - don't know if it's accurate, but they say he was born in Hanover Germany in 1833 or 1834, depending on which source is correct. He is reported to have emigrated at the age of 11, so around 1844 or 1845. Another source said he came to California in 1849 "from the South" and made some money in the Gold Rush. He then bought property in Contra Costa County and lived there for awhile. In 1860 he moved to San Francisco, where he was partner in an assaying firm, Riehn, Hemme & Co. But he is reported to have made more money in real estate than in assaying precious metals, buying land in S.F. and building houses on it. Around 1880 he moved back to Contra Costa, bought a large piece of land comprising about 2,000 acres. He died in 1904. My field of interest is a man who is reported to have landscaped Hemme's Contra Costa property.
