My husband Ron and I are trying to find out anything about where his family came from. His Grandfather's name was Syl(Sylvester) Hendershott, lived in N.J.when he knew him! There are no records of him, even in death that we can find, or who his family was and where they come from. Would appreciate any help we could get. Thanks, Linda and Ron

Murder of Irma Hendershott (b- abt 1913-1914), d/o of unknown William Hendershott

Here's a murder mystery puzzle, since I've been unable to track down more on how Irma (b- abt. 1913-1914 d- July 4, 1929) or her father William Hendershott fits in our Hendershot/Hendershott tree. With all this coverage I found with my subscription at NewspaperArchives.com there was not one article showing Irma's obit. I was hoping to find that in order to learn more about her family. I can't find Irma or her father William in the 1920 census, nor him in any other census in Missouri. Didn't get any hits for New Madrid Co. Missouri, where he was a "prominant farmer" as mentioned in some of these 1929 articles. It's like they just fell off the face of the earth except for these articles regarding Irma's murder. Perhaps others among our Hendershot Researchers will have better success than me in finding out more about Irma and her father William. Here are all of the articles I found and although there is AP repetition, there are little additional tidbits from them that aren't in every article. Can you help solve this mystery?

Till later.....Bobbi Harrison

The Murder of Irma Hendershott (b- about 1913-1914), d/o of unknown William Hendershott ~ murdered by Claude Mayberry aka Honas Mayberry, also worked under assumed name of Fred A.
Rex G. HENDERSHOTT (1934-1999)

I am looking for relatives or neighbors of Rex W. Hendershott. He was born in 1934 and died 25 Sep 1999 in San Fran, CA. I know he lived in Kansas at one time, but I do not know for how long (at least from 1963-1969).

Apparently my boyfriend had the last name and thought, until the age of five (he was born 1963), that this man was his father. At that time, Rex left and his mother changed his last name and told him that Rex wasn't his real father.

Too late we tried to find him, as my boyfriend really wants to know who his father is, and wanted to reconnect with the man he called "Daddy".

What we're wondering is: Is Rex really his father, or was someone else? Surely some of Rex's family in Kansas would know.

His mother changed his last name to Lawhorn, and told him that Charles Eugene Lawhorn was his father. But, she told him so many different things that he doesn't know who his father is, and never even met Mr. Lawhorn. So, if anyone knows or knew either of these men or their families, please get in touch with me. Even if you don't know for sure, a simple blood test would tell for certain!

Hendershott History

I recently retyped a family history of my branch of the Hendershott family (Missouri) that had been originally written by my great-grand father in 1923. Please let me know if you are part of any of these branches! And, if you know of anything in relation to the Coat of Arms mentioned.

GENEALOGY Of the Family of Hendershott
Formerly Von Hayderschatt
By Robert Morrison Hendershott
Middletown, Mo.1923

Von Hayderschatt

The orthography is Hendershott and Hendershot. The Coat of Arms was conferred on the family January 12, 1612, A..D. by Maximillian I, Elector and Duke of Bavaria. The arms was granted to my tenth great grand parent who was devoted supporter of Maximillian and of the Catholic party. His name previous to ennoblement was Hayder and his family belonged to the landed gentry and had a Coat of Arms different from this. See above. The grandson of the Hayder who was ennobled 1612 embraced Lutheranism and for this act had his estate confiscated – (this was in consonance with the persecutions of the Catholics) – about 1675.

Michel Hayder Von Hayderschatt was his name. He married, at Vienna, Catherine Heinrich, daughter of Sir Herrn Franz Christoph Von Heinrichzur Heinshofer, Minister to the Court of Regansburg. He was ennobled May 15, 1675, by the Emperor Leopold I. Michel Hayder Von Hayderschatt died insane in the Herzogthern von Ober-Darla and left an only child, Johann George Von Hayderschatt, who came to Sussex county, N.J., September 14th, 1694 with Johannes, Varon von Derhind, his father-in-law and wife (wife of Johann George Von Hayderschatt) – who was Johanna Von Derhind. She died 1750 leaving an infant son, Wilhelm Johann George Von Hayderschatt. Afterwards he married Jannetee Schermerhom and by her had Michael and Jacobus.

The brothers, Wilhelm, Michael and Jacobus, changed their names or the orthography of it to Hendershott. It was intended for Henderschatt as some of the Bavarian family now sign or spell their names, also some spell it Heiderschatt or Heiderschadt.

Wilhelm’s posterity is extinct.

Jacobus’ descendants were the founders of the Kentucky and Virginia families.

Michael’s descendants formed the early Ohio families. He was (perhaps my second great grand-parent), born in New Jersey; served in the Sussex county, New Jersey Regulars, during the Revolutionary War. He returned to Germany 1774 and married Sarah Von Schall, also collected a fortune of about $25,000 and in 1775 returned to America and settled in Columbia county, Pennsylvania. He left a large family. He was buried near Melleville in Columbia county, Pennsylvania. His estate was valued at $40,000, a fortune in those days.

Of Michael Schermerhom Von Hayderschatt’s prosperity I know but little. The names of a few sons: John, who married Jane Kitchen; William married Mary Kitchen, sister to the above Jane. There was a Jesse, a Jacob, an Isaac and several others whose posterity were scattered through Ohio and westward, some around Springfield, and some in Cincinnita, Ohio. Jesse Hendershott married Jane Hodge or Hodgeson.

My family are descendants of Isaac, he being my grand-father. The Coat of Arms was painted from the original at Munich, Bavaria, by the private secretary of the King of Bavaria. The colors are blue, gold and silver – blue and silver denoting imperial rank. Stars – Silver; Crown – Gold; Upper part and angle – Blue; Base – Black.

When 18 years of age I entered the Union Army as a musician, Co, H. 122 O. V. I. In the spring of 1864 I was promoted to Principal Musician of the regiment which gave me the rank of Sergeant-Major. I was engaged in 52 battles and skirmishes. At the battle of Winchester, Va., in 1963, I assisted in recueing a wounded comrad from between the lines of battle under very heavy fire. I served to the end of the war and was present at the surrender of General Lee to General Grant.

On June 9, 1862, Mary E. Morgan, a daughter of Owen Morgan, of Batesville, Ohio, and I were united in Holy matrimony by Rev. Richard Cartwright of the Methodist Episcopal Church. To us were born eight children: Flora V., Minnie I., Maggie, Chalmers D., Albert E., Maude, and Lena and Leta, twins, who died in infancy.

My grandfather, Isaac Hendershott, had fours sons: Michael (my father); Jesse, of Muskingum county, Ohio; Jacob, of Morgan county, Ohio; and Abel, who settled in Michigan. The one daughter, Catharine, married James Scott, of Tuscarawas county, Ohio.

The maiden name of father’s mother was Susanna Schumaker. She had a twin sister, Betsy, who married Mr. Arter, of Belmont county, Ohio.

The family was brought up on Seven-mile Run, near Flushing, Belmont county, Ohio.

Father was born March 11, 1811; deceased May 8, 1900, aged 80 years: was married October 9, 1833, to Miss Mary Reed. She was born January 6, 1815; deceased September 2, 1864.

They had ten children. viz.
Susan Adella, born January 9, 1834; deceased July 30, 1836.
Martha Katherine, born October 22, 1834; deceased September 24, 1842.
Mary Elizabeth, born November 12, 1837; deceased December 22, 1842.
Isaac Reed, born October 7, 1939.
Keturah Jane, born December 1, 1841; deceased June 6, 1843.
Robert Morrison, born January 18, 1844.
William Darr, born December 16, 1845; Deceased.
Sarah Keturah, born November 23, 1847; Deceased.
John Theodore, born November 4, 1849; deceased January 24, 1853.
James Chalmers, born November 1, 1852. Deceased.
The ten children were born on Batesville, Guernsey county Ohio. The township was detached and became part of Noble county.

Robert Morrison Hendershott

It is with sincere regret we chronicle the passing away from this earth to the great beyond of Mrs. Eliza Hendershott, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Pringle, Tuesday, June 18, 1907. Deceased was born in Illinois December 6, 1826, thus had passed nearly 81 years in life's journey. Her illness covered several months duration, being of a dropsical nature. Of the nine children born to this union, four survive their mother --- William and Mrs. Frank Pringle of this city, Milo of Muscatine, and James of Missouri.
Join the Hendershots in Rochester on Aug 24.
Hi Hendershots, 16 July 2003

My name is Blair Hendershot. I am Vice-president of the Hendershot Researchers Group, and I want to let you in on some good news.

The Hendershot Researchers group is a group of people, from the US and Canada with interests in the family history of the Hendershot family. They are Hendershots, or their mother or, their grandmother was a Hendershot. The group has been organized and having reunions for about fifteen years. We have met in Oldwick, New Jersey, Buck Valley, Pennsylvania, Toronto, Canada, Salt Lake City, Utah and Belmont County, Ohio. It has been a wonderful and fulfilling experience following the migration of the family, and meeting Hendershot cousins. We are growing and are doing some great things.

As you already know there were Hendershots who migrated to upper state New York and to Canada and back. You may be descendants of them; or like me you may be a latecomer. I came to Webster, N.Y. in 1961. Since then I have had dozens of phone calls for Bud Hendershot from people wanting to rent an apple tree. I have been asked a thousand times if I am related to the Hendershots in Hilton. I don't know Bud, but I hear that he is a great guy, and yes I am related (distantly) to the Hendershots in Hilton, or to Steve Hendershot in Churchville. A while back I saw a girl from Leroy with "HENDERSHOT" on the back of her High School jacket. Last month I saw a trailer with "HENDERSHOT" on it's side. More evidence that there are a lot of Hendershots in the area. As this family grows we loose track of our cousins. It's time to get reacquainted. We want to meet you and hope that you may want to meet us and other local Hendershots.

On Sunday afternoon, the 24th of August 2003 there will be an Upstate New York Hendershot Family Outing at the Lakeside Shelter #2, in Webster Park, Webster, N.Y. We are extending an invitation to all Hendershots, and anyone else interested in getting together with the Hendershots, to come out and get acquainted. We have the shelter from noon until 10:30 PM. Bring your own food and drink, lawn chairs, etc. Plan on having a good time, because we're family. This will be informal, down-to-earth, family fun.

Karen Gaughan, President of the HR group and a few of the HR members will be there. If you are interested in the family history (Genealogy) of the Hendershot family; this is a great time to get acquainted and learn more about the family, the research group, and what good things they are doing, and availability of information on the family. Invite any Hendershots that you know. Hope to see you there.
For Webster Park, exit off of RT.104 in Webster, at the Holt Rd exit. Go north on Holt Rd to Lake Rd, and you're in the park.

Hi. I'm trying to locate some information about a musician named Hayder Hendershott. In the middle 1940s, he was working in the Los Angeles area. I believe he is the same Hayder Hendershott who was born in 1912 (where?) and died in 1990 in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm a music historian and chiefly I'm concerned with learnig what instrument (or instruments) Mr. Hendershott played...I'd be grateful for any help -- Thank you -- Kevin Coffey

The Arner Family Association seeks descendants of:

AMANDA M. HENDERSHOTT, Enos Arner, 1810-1888, Groveland, Livingston, NY.

You are almost certainly descendants of Hans Ulrich Arner and Verena Eberhard, 1735 immigrants from Switzerland to Philadelphia. Join us for an August 24-25, 2002 gathering in beautiful Lehigh County, Pennsylvania (1 hour north of Philadelphia). For “reunion” information or to see where you fit into the *rner family, visit Joe Erner’s website at www.geocities.com/~erner/gen/arner which documents the Arner/Aner family to the 1500s, or contact us through the Arner Listserv at ARNER-L@rootsweb.com. We’re planning two fun-filled days including a catered Pennsylvania Dutch luncheon and the dedication of a memorial stone in the Heidelberg Union Church cemetery to honor the immigrants. Help us widen our circle of cyber-cousins and plan to attend. We welcome you.

decendants of Ida May Saum/George E. Hendershott

Their firstborn, Claude Eugene Hendershott was my father, but he had changed his name to Kenneth James Marshall when he married my mother, Helen Hanson in Oct. 1939 in Hollywood, CA. The Hendershotts were from Paradise, Russell Co. Kansas. There were 5 Hendershott children: Claude Eugene, Everett Winton, Lois twins Roy Ray. Ida May died 2 days after the birth of the twins in March 1923. George died in 1933/34. The only living sibling of my father is Lois, who had the most children. I am trying to locate my half-sister, Barbara Jean b- Aug. 1931 half-brother, Rexford Gale b- 1935 from Claude's 1st marriage to Valesta Delight Tate. Also trying to locate any of my cousins. I had a death date of 1962 (in Calif.) for my father, other sources have it listed as 1970 in Calif. I need documentation, as there isn't a SS Death Index listing under either name he used. All help appreciated. Thanks.

Bobbi Harrison
Puyallup, WA
