Hennessy Family of Lisvernane, Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary, Ireland.

Dear Searchers,

For the past 300 Years the village of Lisvernane deep in the Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary, Ireland has produced hundreds of people with the Family Surname Hennessy.

Timothy Hennessy (born circa 1700 in Dangan, County Cork, Ireland) was my 4th Great Grandfather. He married Kate Fahy and the entire Townsland of Lisvernane of about 2,000 acres was evenly divided between himself and his brother-in-law Dennis Fahy. His great-great-great grandson Jack Hennessy now lives in the Homeplace and the entire village is peppered with Hennessy Cousins.

Many members of the Family emigrated the U.S.A. - mainly to Chicago - many are buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Chicago. Savannah, Georgia was another popular destination.

PLEASE, PLEASE Contact Me (or Telephone Me) if any of this is of interest to you. I have hundreds of names and details in my Family Tree Software - from years of Research.

Brian O'Farrell,
Skeheen,
Mitchelstown,
County Cork,
Ireland.
Tel: 00-353-25-24163 (with Voice-Mail).
Joseph & Julia Hennessy - Philadelphia area - died 1998

Hi.

Wondering if anyone out there might have these two in their family tree? I discovered them buried in a family burial plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Wyndmoor, Cheltenham, PA.

I am not sure where in the Phila. area they lived (likely Jenkintown)
Joseph Hennessey (buried 2 Jan 1998, age 86)
Julia B. Hennessy (buried 2 Jun 1998, age 91)

The plot was owned by my grand-uncle Michael Collins (he died in 1922). His wife Julia is buried there (d. 1918) as is his sister Margaret (d. 1920). There are two other people besides them buried here - none of whom I know but suspect are descended from other Collins siblings.

Mary M. O'Connell (of Shurs Lane in Manayunk - buried on 9 Sep 1953at age 82)
Mary McGonigal (of Brooklyn NY buried 18 Oct 1965 age 30)

Thanks.
Thomas Hennessy

Looking for info on my gr grandfather Thomas Hennessy. He was born in Ireland between 1825-1830 and wound up in Missouri probably as early as 1860. He may have lived in St. Louis at that point. By 1866 he was in Platte County where he married Margaret Cunningham. Eventually they moved to Neosho County, Kansas, where he lived until his death sometime between 1885-1905. I have no leads on his family in Ireland. If any of this sounds familiar, I would love to hear from you.

Mary Ann

Hennessy DNA

Hi all
a while back, I realised I'd come to the end of the paper trail with my Hennessy family in Cork c early 1800s.(James bc 1800, a servant, his son James b.1826 a sailor who emigrated to Liverpool).
I thought the only way forward would be to take a Y-DNA test for Paternal line testing (sorry female Hennesseys - you'll have to get a male Hennessey to take this test). I opted for the Ancestry DNA test having had no luck finding a specific Hennessey project.
I have recently received my resuls from the DNA Ancestry project. As I predicted, there aren't any other Hennessys on there yet but I'll be patient and hope that some on this site may join up to compare results. Interestingly,
I have 250 connections to other names (don't ask me why at this stage). The closest are within 3 - 25 Generations away and most of them are O'Learys or Sullivans originating from Cork where my own branch come from. Apparently the O'Learys and Hennesseys belonged to the same tribe, the Corca Loighde, and share pretty much the same DNA markers.
If anyone has already had their DNA tested with another company and wants to exchange and compare our results please contact me via email tonyhennessey1@talktalk.net(or post a reply on this forum). I have quite a few people promising that they will get their test done or find a living male who might be willing to participate. I would be even happier if more people joined with me on the Ancestry DNA project.
Thanks for reading
Tony
Michael Hennessy/Catherine Drake, Tipperary>Australia ca 1850s

Looking for information on Michael Hennessy born ca 1820s, one of ten children of Thomas Hennessy & Bridget Cleary of Lisvernane, Glen of Aherlow, Parish of Clonbeg, Tipperary. Probably imm. to Australia in the 1850s. I do have names of the siblings & their spouses & some dates.
Hennessy cousins immigrated to Chicago, New York, Connecticut, Georgia & California.
I have very little information on the Thomas Hennessy/Bridget Cleary line but can furnish information on the Michael Hennessy/Mary Cleary & other branches. Thomas & Michael were sons of Timothy Hennessy & Katherine Fahy of Lisvernane whose other children were: Thomas, Peter, Arthur, Patrick, Mary, Honorah (names that repeat in all the families)

.

Murder of John Hennessy by Charles Barrett

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 25 December 1902 Wapanucak, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

SAYS HER HUSBAND IS MURDERER

South McAlester: Mrs. Charles Barrett, wife of the man who was bound over on a charge of the murder of John Hennessy, an old miser who worked on the section at Calvin, has made a written confession, stating that her husband murdered the old man for his money and that he gave her $75 and buried in her presence two $600 government bonds which he was afraid to attempt to dispose of. When confronted with the confession Barrett admitted that he killed the old man for the money and that he gave his wife the money, but denied the circumstance of burying the bonds. Hennessy was found dead on a log where he had been waiting while his clothes were drying on a limb where he had hung them after his Sunday wash.
Hennessy's In Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, Canada

My father's family comes from Bridgetown, Nova Scotia and I am trying to trace back his origins but there is very little information we can find on this. John Reid Hennessy was my Grandfather and he had children with my Grandmother Alice Maxine Lillian Pierce and it is believed they were never married. We aren't sure about the name of John Reid's mother or father to even begin tracing back anything further. We also aren't sure of Alice's background, her mother was said to have met a "Regina Garcia from Spain" in Boston, thus bringing my Grandmother (Alice)into the picture however we are sure she married many times. If anyone has any other information on this that would be great!

Hennessy family from Cork and Liverpool UK

Hello
I'm trying to find out as much information as possible about my Hennessy ancestors in both Cork and Liverpool.
I have James Hennessy b. 1826 in Cork City, Co.Cork who is a retired Royal Navy Sailor by the time he is married to Mary Cosgrove (b.1835 Dublin)in Liverpool. James' father is listed as James, a servant born in Cork. Mary's mother and father are William b. 1807 Dublin and Elizabeth ? b.1805 Dublin - they had seven known children. James and Mary's children all born in Liverpool are James b.1867, Mary Jane b.1869, John b. 1873 and my GGrandfather, William b.1877.
I know that son James married a Sarah and had at least one child, Mary Jane b. 1889. Daughter Mary Jane (1869) married John Cavanagh and they had at least six known children. John disappears off all records as a definite member of the family after 1881. There are several John Hennessys by themselves after this period.
I'd like to find out more about the family in Cork if anybody can connect with my James and I'd like to know anything more about the family in Liverpool. I believe that James may have had brothers in Liverpool - I know of several other Hennessy and Hennessey families with Cork ancestry so it is possible.
Thank you for reading this and hopefully someone out there can help.
Regards
Tony Hennessey in Liverpool

lost relatives

My grandfather, Thomas Hennessy was one of eight children born in or near Knocknagad Co. Laois in April 1884. He had brothers John, Patrick, Joseph, William and sisters Anne, Mary and Lizzie. Joseph and William went to the States, William to Chicago and Joseph to Denver where he married the daughter of the local mayor who was originally from Co. Kerry. William's home may have had a serious fire and we don't know the outcome. Joseph had at least two children, a son and a daughter and the son was killed in an accident. My grandfather was the youngest so we estimate that the brothers may have emigrated around the turn of the century leaving from Queenstown, Cork. Patrick was last seen in South Africa but we have heard nothing from them or their descendents in about 90 years. If you think you may be able to shed some light on this mystery please contact me.

John P. HENNESSY, Trinity Cty, CA

Sacramento Evening Bee
Friday, June 30, 1905

MAKES GOOD HIS PROMISE
Trinity County Man Strikes Fortune In Tonopah and Returns Home to Carry Out
Cherished Project
BURNT RANCH (Trinity Co.), June 30 - John P. HENNESSY, rich and just
returned here to the scenes of his boyhood and to visit his parents, will
build a wagon road from Burnt Ranch into Humboldt County at a cost of
$10,000, just to carry out a promise he made himself when he was a boy. The
road will be fourteen miles long, built through a very difficult country,
and will be an absolute gift to this little community, which has never had
such a convenience as a wagon road.
When Hennessy was a boy a wagon road was a great curiosity. He saw one in
Humboldt County, but it ended at the mouth of South Fork, which is fourteen
miles from Burnt Ranch. He often said when he was a boy that if he ever
became rich he would build a wagon road to Burnt Ranch, but his listeners
always laughed at him.
Now comes the fulfillment of this promise. He has amassed a fortune at
Tonopah, and returned to Burnt Ranch, and set twenty-five men and more that
than number of horses at work on the proposed highway, which is to be an
easy grade and a perfect wagon road in every way. It will be a part of the
road to connect Humboldt to Trinity Counties - the road that both counties
have for years sought in vain to induce the Legislature to help along by an
appropriation . The last Legislature, it will be remembered, did pass such a
bill, but the Governor vetoed it.
The road is to be free to everybody.
Looking for Joseph Hennessy

I'm looking for what would be my GGgrandfather. His name was Joseph Hennessy and he married a Clara Schaefer and they had one child (i've been told just the one but can't be sure). The son's name was John Josephy Hennessy. They lived in NY, and either Joseph or Joseph's parents I'm told came over from Ireland. I'm also told he and his wife were Catholic and that they separated while their son was young but never officially divorced. Their son was born Sept. 19, 1912 in Brooklyn

Any information would be appreciated. My grandmother claims her family is from Dublin but I have no information right now to be sure of that.

Hennessy's of Doneraile

I recently discovered my family came to the U.S. in at least 2 waves,
first in the late 1850's and at least one came through Ellis Island in 1912.

Three brother's (Denis dob May 8, 1833 - Old Twopothouse, Daniel dob Mar
15, 1835 - Cooleen, and Michael dob Jun 27, 1838 - Ballymague) son's of
Dennis Hennessy & Mary Buckley (ages and marriage date, or place unknown)
Came to the U.S. in the 1850's and settled in Bayonne, N.J. In 1912 a
William Hennessy arrived in the U.S. married and had children, his wife was
Mary Jackson who came to the states 5 years before probably not
from the same town. On the Ellis Island records William listed
> Doneraile as his hometown. I discover
> ed this as I found, and explored, William Hennessy & Family living with a
descendent from the original Hennessy family in 1930 census living in the
SAME HOUSE. It would seem there would be a blood connection. Yesterday I
sent for William Hennessy's death certificate and his naturalization papers,
as of 1930 census it indicates he back a U.S. citizen. I'd like to hear from
anyone with any knowledge about possible family.
>
> Thank you, Tom Hennessy
William Hennessy

William Hennessy, son of Patrick Hennessy and Bridget Murphy, b. about 1853 in Canada, married Bridget Murrane 14 Nov 1881 in Dallas Co. Iowa. Only child I'm aware of was an adopted son, Arthur Aspinwall born in England about 1885, who married Kathryn Rooney. Thanks for any clues as to where the Hennessy's may have lived or are buried. Bridget Murrane was my great aunt.
