Hi Trisha

Which family line in Pa are you from? There are many and varied spellings of the name and all seem and I know stem from mainly one family. I have the following spellings:

Hennefer, Henneffer, Hennifer, Henefer, Henifer, Henofer, Henefor, Henneford, Heneford, Heniford, Henneferd and more.

Many have been miss spellings through illiteracy.

Regards

Pam
Pam, ‘Hope I can be of assistance to you. In my research I have encountered several Hennefer references. For various reasons I have concluded that your Hennefer and my Henhoeffer/Henofer are two distinct familes. Below are excerpts from the Philadelphia City directory books for 1869 - 1925.
1869	Henifer, Joseph	machinist	h 337 Bridge, Whitehall
1870 Hennefer, Edward	polisher	h 337 Bridge, W Hall
1873	Hennefer, Edward	polisher	h 337 Bridge, W Hall
1883	Hennefer, Alfred	grinder h 337 Bridge, W Hall
1883	Hennefer, Edward	grinder h 337 Bridge
1883	Hennefer, Sarah	dressmaker	h 337 Bridge
1883	Hennefer, William E	moulder	h 337 Bridge
1889	Hennefer, Margaret	wid {Edward ?}	337 Bridge W Hall
1889	Hennefer, Alfred	grinder 337 Bridge W Hall
1889	Hennefer, William E	grinder 337 Bridge W Hall
1890	Hennefer, Alfred	machinist	h 337 Bridge
1890	Hennefer, Edward	laborer	h 337 Bridge W Hall
1890	Hennefer, Eliza h 337 Bridge W Hall
1890	Hennefer, Margaret	wid Edward	h 337 Bridge W Hall
1890	Hennefer, William E	machinist	h 337 Bridge W Hall
1892	Hennefer, Margaret	wid Edward	h 2219 Bridge W Hall
1892	Hennefer, William E	polisher	h 2219 Bridge W Hall

The “Whitehall” in the above excerpts is section of the city. That section name is unknown to me, but I do know the home (h) 337 Bridge St. is presently located in the far Northwest of the city (nowhere near my Henhoeffer’s homes). Joseph was a machinist. 2219 Bridge is not presently a good address in Whitehall section of Phila. Regrettably now, some of the data (didn't have a lot) I had accumulated on the “Hennefer” family has been purged from my files.
1880	Henefer, Annie	varieties	66 Blodgett
1882	Henefer, James	liquors 66 Blodgett
Annie & James not known to be Henhoeffer/Henofer. May be Hennefer? No present-day street named “Blodgett.”
1924	Hennefer, Wm E	formn h 2219 Bridge Fkd
1924	Hennefer, Wm E Jr	clk r 2219 Bridge Fkd
1925	Hennefer, Mary	(wid Wm E)	h 2219 Bridge Fkd
1925	Hennefer, Wm E Jr	clk r 2219 Bridge Fkd
“Fkd” stands for Frankford, another city section in the mid-Northeast. These Hennefer people are not thought to be of my Henhoeffer/Henofer family. Also, “h” and “r” 2219 Bridge are NOT the same house. “r” means “rear” An “h” house fronted on the street, the “r” house was behind the “h” house. Yearly City Directories ended in 1930.
CIVIL WAR VETERANS

LAST NAME, FIRST UNIT STATE REGIMENT RANK
Henofer	Joseph	Company F	Penna. 72 Infantry,	Pvt. - Pvt.
{written underneath in script} “Hennefer, Joseph”
Could be either a Hennefer or a Henhoeffer. My guess is Henhoeffer/Henofer, one of my relatives. I could be wrong!
Bob O’Neill -- e-mail: henofer@juno.com
Hi Bob

Thank you so much for your reply. The earliest member of our "Hennefer" family is 1734 "John", but no birth place or parentage. He was married in the Midlands in 1771 and a branch came up North of England and settled. We know 2 x Hennefer's were pioneers and settled in Utah, naming a town "Henneferville" now known as "Henefer".

I no longer can get into the USA docs from Ancestry.com, but when I could, I located another 2 x "Hennefer's" in Phillie and Pen. There are many variants, as I am sure you know about and I would love more info and get a wider knowledge. I had looked over 3 yrs ago at Prussia and thought it was and is a possible. Just maynot get the proof we need though.

Any info you can give me will be gladly received.

Regards

Pam

Pam, My relative Nicholas came to Phila. around 1833. At that time his last name was spelled Henhoeffer. Shortly afterward his name and his children's names were spelled Henofer. His daughter, Mary Catharine (Kate) Henofer is my great grandmother. Nicholas came from Baden, Germany, in an area just south of Karlsrue. Three towns associated with the family are Spessart, Volkersbach, and Etlingen.

Another Henofer came to (south) New Jersey before 1840. His son John is listed in the NJ 1880 Census, along with his three children.

From LDS records - 1880 PA Census:

John Henofer, widower, age 40, born NJ, occu: Tailor, Father born Prussia, Mother born New Jersey.
Frank son of John, single, age 17, born NJ, occu: printer, father & mother born New Jersey
Lizie {sic}, daughter of John, age 15, born NJ, occu: Corset Maker, both parents born New Jersey
Sefrin, son of John, age 13, born NJ, occu: telegraph boy, both parents born New Jersey

I have some more data on the "Henofer" family if you think it might be of help to you.

Bob O'Neill -- henofer@juno.com

Hi Tom

Do you know if there are any connections from the UK?

My reason for asking is, I have a family member from way back and his name was spelt "Henofer" and he was from a line of Hennefer's. They came from the Midlands around 1760- present day and some went up to the North and a few emigrated to the USA.

I have no contacts within the USA for this line and just thought it would be worth asking you, I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND.

Regards

Pam
