My mother compiled what I know about the Henry line. Can anyone add more information for me? Who was Hugh HENRY's father?
THE HUGH HENRY LINE by Catherine Henry Pitt [b. 1914 d. 1998]
HUGH HENRY, SR. was born in Accomack County, Virginia, c. 1716, I expect he was the son of Alexander Henry and Jean Robertson, of Aberdeen Scotland. He married Mary Donelson, daughter of Patrick Donelson, of Pittsylvania County, Virginia c. 1739. They came with John Donelson on his trip to Tennessee in 1779. Hugh, Sr. established ownership of land on the Red River near Clay Lick. Seven children were born to Hugh and Mary. [records show the place of birth for only three-two in VA and one in TN.] (1) HUGH HENRY, JR. , the first sheriff of Robertson County, in 1796, the year of our statehood., (2) JOHN HENRY, Henry Taylor’s grandfather and (3) DAVID HENRY who was mine. There was a girl named Catherine, spelled as I spell my own name, but I did not know about her until I started my research. Hugh, Sr. died in 1808.
DAVID HENRY was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1753 and died in 1846 in Robertson Co. TN. In 1777, he served six months as Orderly Sergeant in Captain John Donelson’s Company and in Colonel Evans Shelby’s Virginia Regiment. He was with an expedition against the Cherokees. He again enlisted, in early 1778 and served as Orderly Sergeant in Captain Dillard and Montgomery’s Company: in Colonel George Rogers Clark’s “Illinois Expedition†to capture Oakhaw (Kaskaskia) and was discharged August 28, 1778. David married Priscilla EARHART Mooring and they had five children, one of whom was Captain Lemuel James Henry.
CAPTAIN LEMUEL JAMES HENRY was born in 1804 and died in 1877. He married Sallie Pope in 1839 and owned land in the Cross Plains area of Robertson County. They had eight children. Two of them were Alonzo Marion, my ancestor and Boyd, who was Phil W. Henry’s ancestor.
ALONZO MARION HENRY was born in 1845 and died in 1879 in Robertson County, Tennessee. He married Sallie House, daughter of a Doctor House. Several Children died early in childhood with only two boys, James Lemuel and Charles Bell, surviving. Alonzo Marion had fought in the War Between the States and had not been well since. He was a worn out sick soldier. He died when James Lemuel was eleven years old and Bell was thirteen and one-half. In 1882, Sallie married Dr. D. W. Anderson who did not want her boys. So, Grannie Sallie gave them to Boyd Henry, Alonzo Marion’s younger brother to raise on the farm. Bell was very unhappy and ran off, caught a train to Louisville, Kentucky, and worked for the railroad.
JAMES LEMUEL HENRY, my grandfather, was born 19 Dec 1867 and died 1 Jan 1941 in Robertson county. He farmed and married Clara Edgar Featherston on 18 Dec 1889. Clara was the eldest daughter of the Reverend George Washington Featherston who established many Baptist Churches in the county. “Papa Jim “ did right well I think to have had no financial help. He became a farmer, bought and paid for the house and farm that I still own, He was widowed at forty-five but never remarried. He was not an affectionate person and always resented Granny Sallie giving him away.
WILLIAM ALONZO HENRY , was the only child born to James Lemuel and Clara Henry. He was born 1 Mar 1891 and died 24 Feb 1961. He was Valedictorian of his 1910 class at the Orlinda Institute. He became a farmer, sang and played the guitar and was very active in the Orlinda Baptist Church. He married Martha Elizabeth Corban of Montgomery County, Tennessee, on 4 Nov 1913. I was their only child, Clara Catherine, born 2 Nov 1914.
