Samuel Henshaw, Rappohannick VA

I'm trying to find some information on Samuel Henshaw, born 1661 in Rappohannick, Virginia. He married Keziah Pell. I've found quite a few trees listing Joshua Henshaw (1672) and Elizabeth Sumner (1652) as his parents However, since that would make them 9 and -11 when Samuel was born I'm thinking that either the names or the dates must be wrong.

Anyone have any light to shed on this? I'd really like to find Samuel's parents.

Thanks.

DNA and Genealogical Research.

DNA AND GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH.
Testing the Y Chromosome DNA is the newest cutting edge in Genealogical Research. With the DNA results along with a paper trail, many participants have been able to break through their brick wall; confirm or eliminate a paper trail they have been researching for years; find new DNA cousins to share genealogical lines with and identify a common grandfather; identify where their direct male line originated and where they traveled for 1,000’s of years; and much more.
The Y Chromosome is passed down from father to son(s) for thousands of years virtually unchanged. If someone matches another person’s Y Chromosome DNA, then they are related especially if they share the same surname. The Y Chromosome is junk DNA in that it contains no information as to your physical being such as hair and eye color, height, left or right handed, bald or not bald, possible disease situations, etc. This information comes from other DNA and is not part of the Y Chromosome. All results are strictly confidential.
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is the leading and largest Genealogical Y Chromosome lab in the country. They have 4,576 Surname projects and 113,985 Y DNA records in their data base which is increasing every day. The cost for testing your Y Chromosome is very reasonable and if you test through one of the Surname Projects, there is reduced rate. Their Web Site can be found at: http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx
If you have questions or want more information, please feel free to contact me, Dick Allen at: oldbones1@comcast.net or my daughter, Tammy Valdez at: bonedigger@bigfoot.com
My mother was a Henshaw.

James HANDSHAW (Henshaw?) ~alias~ MOODY - Rev. War times

I have seen reference to a James HANDSHAW ~alias~ MOODY listed a couple of times while browsing the internet searching my 5th grt. grandfather James Moody b.c1750.
I have once again stumbled across this name and so am posting this here in case anyone might be able to help me.
This is from the Old United Empire Loyalists List -
Handshaw alias Moody, M. H. District Secret Service
I have seen this man's first name before listed as "James".
I am wondering now however if this might not be the Lt. James Moody who was born in New Jersey to English parents who was the well known Spy for the British during the Rev. War and "Handshaw" may have been a name he used.

This Lt. James Moody removed to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia after the Rev. War and this is why I think this might be him.
Since my 5th grt. grandfather's name is the same - James Moody and since I cannot find anything about his family, I am checking all possibilites which brings me to this page.

I saw a show on PBS about a Henshaw or Handshaw family (show on Genealogy that was Great), who was from Ireland.
My father's ydna does not match to this Lt. James Moody, descendants who have been ydna tested, nor to any other English Moody's (we have 23 English participants so far), but he does match to 2 men who have links to Northern Ireland, which leads me to believe that my James Moody (prob. spelled Moodie or Mudie) came to North America by way of Ulster, Ireland OR directly from Scotland.

If anyone knows anything about this possible "James Moody" or "James Handshaw" from the Rev. War days, I would be most interested to hear about him. So far I've been able to find nothing, unless he is that Lt. James Moody of NJ to Yarmouth, NS, CAN.
Thank You very much.

Henshaw, Hatters of Oldham

I wonder whether any of you have any information on the family of Thomas Henshaw, founder of The Bluecoats School in Oldham, Lancashire and Henshaw's Society for Blind People in Manchester (both in England). Thomas and his brother Henry made a great deal of money at the beginning of the 19th century making beaver hats in Oldham. They were supposed to have been the sons of John and Martha Henshaw who farmed in Prestbury, Cheshire and there were brothers John, Christopher, Benjamin and a sister Ann or Hannah. Henry was probably born in 1732 and Thomas in 1733. Thomas married firstly a Hannah Taylor in 1754 and had a son, Henry, born in 1755 who died when he was ten years old. Thomas' will was contested by his second wife, Mrs Sarah Mayers Henshaw (née) Taylor and Mrs Anne Hadfield. The information comes from an unpublished work found in Manchester Central Library called "Henshaw and His Sons" by J.Marshall Taylor. No source information was given for the family details.

My interest is in George Hadfield a partner in the Henshaw brothers' hatting business. He was a great nephew of Thomas Henshaw (by marriage); his mother (Anne) probably being a daughter of one of the other brothers, not Henry; he apparently didn't marry. George Hadfield's three first children were Thomas Henshaw Hadfield, Christiana Hadfield and Henry Henshaw Hadfield born between 1801 and 1809. The first two boys were obviously named after Thomas and Henry Henshaw and I wonder whether the daughter, Christiana, may have been named after Christopher Henshaw. I am trying to find out how Anne Henshaw, George Hadfield's mother, met George's father, probably a John Hadfield and when and where!

A copy of "Henshaw and His Sons" by J.Marshall Taylor is available on request.
Regards
Tim Hadfield
DATA: Henshaw, J. listed in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

DATA Message RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA).

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes). It includes the following name(s):

Henshaw, J.

There's over 1,900 records, so I've only listed the name(s), as it appears in the yearbook in this message.

If you would like to view all of the information that I extracted from the yearbook, I have uploaded it to my freepages genealogy web site. The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that my site contains free genealogy related data & IS NOT a "commercial" or "advertising" site. Until I can get back out & do research on my own families, my hobby is posting free genealogy related data online that may help other reseachers. I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site (including information others send to me to share on the site), not just data about the families I am researching (therefore I can't answer questions about everyone I have listed on the site). I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Was there a town in the 1800's in England whose nickname or shortened name was Cotma? The report of the death of my g-grandfather, Thomas R. Henshaw, said that he came from Cotma, England. I don't have very much info on him as he died several months after my grandmother was born (Jan. 26, 1883) and his wife, Elizabeth Mills, remarried. Knowing what town he came from would be a great help.

Henshaw family - Rhodesia and South Africa

Hi my name is Gail Peggs, My Mother was born Winifred Elizabeth Henshaw, I think she was born in Rhodesia and I know that she had two sisters Rene (who is still living in Zimbabwe) and Joan who died when she was 15.

I am not sure what her parents names were but I think that her Mom's maiden name was Crawford-Cooper. She Married my Dad Arnold George Peggs in Rhodesia (don't know the date). My Dad was in the Rhodesian Airforce for a while and they emigrated to SA in 1980.

If anybody has any information I would be grateful as my Mom passed away in July 2002, and while I was going through her stuff I found a post card addressed to Flossie and a Winnie is also metioned in the post card. I know that it does not refer to my mother as it was written in 1912 and my Mother was born in 1931, I htink that it may be a letter written by her Grandmother to her Mother.

Any infomation would be helpful

Thanks Gail.
He was the son of William Henry Henshaw of Bedford, Eng. George came to the US in 1914 and married a woman by the name Rhoda (maiden name not known). One family member believes he had one son another thinks there was two sons and one died in WWII.

In the obituary of his brother, William Arthur, in 1949 George is listed as living in Albany NY. But, I found George in the Florida Death Index as dying in Marion Co. Florida in Feb 1965. It is still possible that an obit was published in Albany. He may have even been buried in Albany according to a family member. Especially if there was family and friends still living in Albany NY. He and his wife may have been 'snow birds', with a main residence in Albany and wintering in Florida.

Anyone with suggestions or willing to help please contact me.

I found a formal photo of this distinguished-looking gentleman that was taken in June 1913 by the "Barnum Studio," but no location was given. Mr. Henshaw looks to be middle-aged. I couldn't resist trying to find a "home" for him with a descendant and felt his name was unusual enough that someone might recognize it.

Henshaw's were already in York. I don't know why they were in U.S. ahead of their daughter. James and Mary Hannah were married in Wigan, England, and emigrated to U.S., in 1912 with their infant son, James, Jr., coming to the port of Philadelphia, then to York, PA.
Charles Henshaw

Looking for info on a Henshaw line coming to the US much later than most of the Henshaws.

Charles Henry Henshaw came to the US from Manchester, Lancashire, England in 1898 at the age of 14 or 15. He stayed w/ his aunt (last name Holland) in Upstate New York.

Sometime after that his mother Jessie (Jordan) Henshaw came here and they moved to Montpelier, Vermont. From what we know his father, also Charles Henry Henshaw, never came to the US.

Sometime before 1920 he and his mother moved to Lynn, Massachusetts. The 1920 census shows him living in Lynn, married to Florence Agnes (Bradshaw) and having 2 daughters.

If anybody can give me any info on my Great-Grandparents I would greatly appreciate it. Or if anybody recognizes this line as I have not been able to connect it to any other Henshaws in this country.

Thank You, Heather

Emily Henshaw-Orr

This lady emigrated to New Zealand around 1880, and died in 1955, at the age of 100 at a nursing home near Christchurch. She corresponded with my aunt, Emily Henshaw who died in 1953. I would like to establish how she is connected to my family. My Great Grandfather, Henry Henshaw of Stockport, Cheshire, (d 1878) had a sister called Emily, but she was about twelve years older. Occasionally people do live to great ages - 110+ and may for one reason lie about their ages. Could they be one and the same?

Colin Henshaw
