My name is John Sanford Heppleston, of Alberta, Canada. My father was William Traves Heppleston, of Ontario, Canada. His father was (my Grandfather) was William Heppleston, of Yorkshire. He was a Blacksmith, trained in England. Immigrated to Canada in the early 1900's.

Hello, I am also a Heppleston. My family hails from Pontefract Yorkshire. My Grandfather was John William, his father James. James was a confectioner, and when he retired from the candy business he purchased a pub in Rawcliff Bridge Yorkshire, the name "Black Horse Pub" It is still there but in poor condition, and not open.
My grandfather William was a Veterinarian, trained at the University of Toronto, prior to the Vet college being moved to Guelph University in Guelph Ontario. I would be pleased to share what I have if anyone thinks they might have a link to my line.

Yes, we had a great trip and although didn't do any original research, were able to visit the villages around Barnsley and Stockton/Whitby with family links, which was very interesting.

I have made contact with members of the Corr family and we plan to meet up soon. Anne is planning to get in touch next time she is in Auckland.

I received Edward's coroners report last week. he was indexed under Hippleston, which is why it would have been difficult to find. I haven't yet transcribed it, and the handwriting is a bit hard to read, but he seems to have been in Blenheim for 1-2 years, living in someone's garden shed, working as a fish seller. He had told someone he was married and had 9 children, but they were in Wellington at the time. So this raises the question of why he became estranged from Mary Jane, soon after they arrived from South Africa?

In Papers Past, search for the phrase "Drowned in a ditch"...

Lynley, did you and your mother make the trip to England?

I only have a couple of photos of Elizabeth Ann (Lily), and no, I don't have any Corr contacts.

I did correspond with and visit the grandson of Ellen (Effie) Heppleston, Clive Christie in Tauranga back around 1990. I have a note with a Clive Lee Christie in Bethlehem in the 2008 electoral rolls. I'll try and see if I can contact him again to see if he has any photos.

Re Edward's death - I did years ago try and find the inquest report at National Archives, without success. I have just done a search of their website, again without success.

What is the web address for the entry about him in Papers Past?

Anne, I would love to see a copy of that letter about William in Malaysia.

It is really fascinating for me to find out about my Grandfathers family. We were told we were the only family members in NZ when we were growing up which is a shame. I know very litle about the Heppleston family. I was able to help Robyn with info about William I think who died in Malaysia but I am keem to find out more of course. I am the only descendat of James in NZ as my brother lives in Oz and my father Alex was an only child.

It's been a while since we corresponded, Robyn. Hi Anne. My great grandmother was Mary Frances Heppleston, the eldest daughter of Edward Heppleston and Mary Jane Sugden.

I'm wondering if you know of any photographs of the older generations of the Heppleston family in any family albums? Mary Jane Heppleston (nee Sugden) lived to 1937 in Auckland, living with her youngest daughter Ruby Corr (Rebecca Harriet Heppleston) - there is a chance that some photos were taken that show her. Do either of you have Corr contacts?

I'm also looking into whether there is a coroner's inquest report available for Edward Heppleston's death in Blenheim in 1911 - have either of you investigated this? If you have not done so, look him up on Papers Past.

That would be great to have some information. I have always wondered about the name Heppleston and there is only myself left in NZ as my father was killed in an accident about 26 years ago. My brother lives in Australia so there is just me in NZ. I live in Tauranga and I have my mother living with me. I have 3 children all in NZ. We have a family reunion in Wellington next month for my mothers side of the family who were the original lighthouse keepers at Pencarrow so it is really neat to know there is information of my other side!!!

Lovely to hear from you. Now I know for sure where William Edward died. I knew he went and worked in Federated Malay States. I have copies of references for him there. Also he travelled there in 1894.

I have a big family tree for the Hepplestons, going back to Thomas Heppleston born about 1810. I've done a lot of research on and off over the 30 years.

Also I found a relative Steve Moran, a NZer who lives in London, who has done a lot of research and added greatly to what I had.

William Edward was always a gap in the tree as regards death date and place. My mother told some me some years ago that when he died he left money to his sisters, Ellen (Effie) used it to buy a house in Petone.

I’d be very happy to share the family tree with you.

I have a letter in front of me dated 11 June 1910 from the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, Downing Street, London replying to a letter from a lady (could be Lily) about the decease and affairs of her brother Mr WE Heppleston. He was apparently ill while working for the Federated Malay States Railways and communication was through a Reverend H R Cooper and the High Commissioner of the Federated Malay States. All interesting. My grandfather John James (Jim) was born in Stockton on Tees fathers name Edward who was a bridge builder. His mothers name was Mary Jane - maiden name Sugden. Jim married Agnes Kerr from Waikouiti. Her parents were from Ireland. And that's about all I know!! Please feel free to make contact again. I would like to know more about the name Heppleston. At one stage we were the only family of that name in NZ.

John James Heppleston was my paternal grandmother Elizabeth Ann (Lily) Heppleston's brother. She married Walter Hambley Pearce and had 4 sons, including my father here in New Zealand.

Do you have any information about their brother William Edward Heppleston?

Hello Andrew, My name is John Sanford Heppleston and I live in Alberta, Canada. My Father was William Traves Heppleston and his Father (my Grandfather) was William Heppleston. It is my understanding that my Grandfather came to Canada in the early part of the 20th century, from Yorkshire, England. His trade was a Blacksmith and he secured a job with the Canaduan Pacific Railroad. His wife (my Grandmother) came from the same area of England and her family name was Reed. Hello, my name is Mark Heppleston and i live in the city of Guelph. Ontario, Canada. A friend said she "googled" my name so i tried it too. What a surprize. There appears to be very few Hepplestons in this part of the world, let alone w/my first name. In any event, my familly comes from Yorkshire England but i know little about them. Having said that, my sister has done extensive geniological work in this regard and may have some information that is usefull to you. My name is Andrew George Heppleston, I am the son of George Henry who was named after his father and likewise. I was the break in generations not to be George Henry. I was born in Stockton.

I was very blinkered in my family history but would like to find out more.

Many of the names in this thread I recognise, and I am also aware of Hepplestone's that are related.

I have on my records Fred Heppleston born in 1882 at Huddersfield, and died in Huddersfield age 72 in 1955.
But at this time that is all I have, if this Fred is your great grandfather he would have been only 19 ? when Tom was born in 1911.
Huddersfield is one of those Towns were I know Heppleston familys moved to other Town's and Heppleston familys moved from other towns to Huddersfield, will e-mail you with sume things that my help you get started on your family research.

Can any one help me find the descendant's from four member's of my branch of the Heppleston family tree,any help would be much appreciated.

Son of Thomas & Sarah, GEORGE HEPPLESTON was born in 1812 at Norwood Green near Halifax and was baptized on 5/7/1813 no more is known.

Son of Samuel and his first wife Caroline, JOSIAH HEPPLESTON was born in 1858 in Wibsey area near Bradford, moved to Drighlington near Bradford before 1881 and married Sarah surname unknown had one son Horace born in Wortley,Leeds in 1888 but he died in 1890. The 1891 Census shows them liveing in Armley area of Leeds no children shown on that Census. Last known address 5,Abbott Terrace Leeds in 1897.

Son of James & Eliza, STEAD HEPPLESTON was born in 1869 in Little Horton, Bradford and married Mary Fieldhouse in Bradford on 5/8/1893 and moved to Manchester and had one known child ARTHUR born 23/12/1894. Last known address 5,Willow Street,Harpurhey,Manchester in 1895.

Son of James & Eliza, ALFRED HERBERT HEPPLESTON was born in 1871 in Little Horton,Bradford and married Alice Warner in Bradford on 22/4/1893 not known if Alfred had any children. Last known address 6,Montague Street,Bradford in 1905.

Any information would be great help in adding more Heppleston's or family's to our family tree.

Thay was William Edward Heppleston born in 1877 and Charles William Heppleston born in 1883 both births were recorded at Middlesbrough Registrar Office. I well look at my research papers to see if I can be of more help, well e-mail you when I have put some thing together that my help you.
Peter do you know year when your grandfather was born, please e-mail me if you do.
Sorry Peter like you the origin of are surname is unknown, in book I once read it said to find early ancestors the great difficulty is to find the first method of spelling the name which is not much help.

My name is Peter Traves Heppleston of Ottawa Ontario,Canada. My Father was William Traves Heppleston, 1913-1984, who married Ruth Beatty Davis 1915-1984. Dad Had 2 brothers; George and Jack, who have also passed on. My grandfather was from Yorkshire, rumoured to be from the Thornaby/Stockton upon Tees area. His name was William Heppleston and he was a Blacksmith by trade. His wife was Lucy Reed. I don't know where her roots were from. What I am really curious about, is where the name HEPPLESTON actual originated. As you well know there are so many variations as well, with HEPPLE being the apparent root of the name. I remember stories bandied about with my relatives, where the name 'Heppleston' came from a place where a battle was fought by a landmark called "The Hepplestone". I suspect now that I am a little older and wiser, that this was probably a stab at wanting to be associated to something honourable, like the ultimate sacrifices made in battle. We also heard that there was a proliferation of fair haired Heppleston's produced after the Norman raids in England which would explain my family's Scandinavian type features. As you can see, rumours abound, so I would really appreciate if you could shed some light the origins of the name. Thank you in advance, and I look forward to your reply. Cheers. Peter

I hope you don't mind me using this in this way, but I am trying to find a friend called Doug Heppleston, but I think his real name was CARL, He comes from Skegness, and I was wondering if you had come across him in your search, we were in the Army together and would love to contact him. He would have been born in 1957-58, If you do now him and want conformation as to who I am tell him it's TAFF.

Hi Ken it's small world you living at Wyke,Bradford and me at Lidget Green,Bradford.
We are not related up to the point where I have research my family tree but at some point in the past we may be.
Your wifes grandmother Emily Heppleston I think Emily my be the brother of Frederick Heppleston who moved from Smithies near Barnsley in 1934, and his descandant still live in the Bradford area today.
Please e-mail me Ken if Frederick is shown on the census you have listed as Emily's brother.

My husbands name is John Heppleston Barrie b.1944
His mother was Mary Elizabeth Heppleston b.1919 in Stockton on Tees.
Her Mother's name was also Mary b.1895 in Thornaby, Stockton on Tees, her first husband was Tom Heppleston (a steel worker) but I believe he died of TB and she remarried a Samuel Wilson.
Just a little bit of information but it may be of some interest.
So far I have been researching my own side of the family but this may get me started on my husbands!

In 1993 I research UK St.Catherines Index of Births 1837-1899 and looking at my papers can not find Sarah Jane Heppleston born in Manchester area, but do have 10 other Sarah Jane's born in other parts of England. Do you have year your Sarah was born or names of her parents it would be great help to me in my research of Heppleston familys.

My branch of the Heppleston family tree have lived in the Bradford area of West Yorkshire England from 1837, and I have research my family tree back to Thomas who married Sarah Oates at Parish Church of Halifax W.Yorkshire on 5th June 1795. Thomas & Sarah had three son's,one died as infant and George born 1812 I have on info on this member of my family. I am descendant of Thomas's first son William born in 1805 at Norwood Green near Halifax.

My g grandmother, Jane Heppleston, got married in Bradford Jan 1876, to Abel Boothroyd. Their only child Lucy Jane Boothroyd, my grandmother, was born in Meltham 20 Sep 1876. Jane's parents were James Heppleston and Martha Hinchliffe. I have info that in the 1881 census Jane and Lucy were alone. My family says he skipped town and went to America. I found Jane and Lucy in the Providence, Rhode Island, USA city directory in 1883. I believe Jane had 2 brothers George and William but I'm not positive.

I have recently started researching my family history and was interested to find your message. My grandfather was Tom Heppleston born in Huddersfield in 1911. His parents were Fred and Daisy May. Tom had brothers Fred, Len and Jim and a sister Clara. I know Jim's family are now in Australia. Do you have any information on the earlier Hepplestons? Also, does the name Eliza Jepson mean anything to you?

Grandfather's name was John James Heppleston and he came from Stoke on Trent. He marries Aggie Kerr in New Zealand. They had one son Alexander James (d) and I am his daughter. I have one brother, Norman, who lives in Australia.

I am researching the branch of the Heppleston family form the Pontefract area. John Heppleston 1819 - 1875 (from Pontefract) married Caroline Spurling 1813 to 1885 (from Ipswich).

They had the following children John (1838), George (1842), Mary J. (1845),Mark (1848), Charles (1849) and James (1850).

John Heppleston was born in 1814 (location unknown), but died in 1875 in Pontefract. He married Caroline Spurling on the 17 April 1836 in Pontefract. There children included:
John (1837)
Mark (1839)
George (1842)
Mary J (1845)
Mark (1848)
Charles (1849)
James (1850)

All in Pontefract.

My wife's paternal grandmother was Emily (to my wife) or Emma (census) Heppleston b1893 in Barnsley. She married John Smurthwaite. I think her parents were James Heppleston b1861 Barnsley and Harriet Bedford b1864 Darton.
Any connections? Coincidently, we live in Wyke, 5 minutes from Norwood Green.
