Hi Folks,

This has to do with the Chatham County, Georgia branch of the Herb family.

Well, my question about Mrs. Sarah Herb has been answered by Carole Farr Drexel. Carole is related to John and Isaac Young, who sold their Dutch Island properties to Frederick and Ursula Herb by 1769.

Also, Carole's son Stefan Reddick is a distant cousin of mine. All sorts of inter-linkages appear when investigating the German / Deutsch descended folks of colonial Georgia.

So, like me - she too has an interest in the Herb family of Chatham County, Georgia.

A couple of points of interest - the Krieger family was also present on Dutch Island. Note that Mary Krieger was an administratrix along with Frederick Herb as the administrator for the estate of John Krieger in 1797 - 1800. I'm going to guess that Mary Krieger started out life as a Herb. Perhaps she was Frederick Herb's sister or daughter.

Then, there's the notice of Mrs. Sarah Herb's death. She is noted as having been the daughter of Balthaser Shaffer, Esquire. There was at that time a large Jewish community in Chatham County. The given name of Balthaser appears to be Jewish in origin. Also, Shaffer might be a Jewish surname. We know from multiple sources of the presence of the Jewish Sheftall family in Chatham County (two of the Sheftalls served in Revolutionary cause).

Is it possible that this is a cross-religion marriage between Captain George Herb (a Protestant) and an young Sarah Shaffer of the Jewish community and faith?

This is exciting material to be exploring!
