Re: Hercular Hercules, Sarah Hercules Curtis, from Kentucky, very curly hair

Andrea, I am descended from James Curtis and Sarah Hercules. I live in Hopkins Co KY where they are buried. They married in Davidson Co TN in 1802. Her mother was Charity according to court records and she had a brother, John, who died in Jan 1814 in the Battle of New Orleans. My great-aunt told me when she was 90 that her curly hair came from someone in the Curtis family whose family came from overseas, where Jesus (or Paul) walked. My daughter had a congenital hip problem as a child that the doctor said came from her Mediterranean ancestry probably. Please email me. Betty

Hi, my farther was Ronald Patrick Sebastian Hercules. He was born in Port Elizabeth South Africa. He later moved to the old Southwest Africa (Now Namibia) with his sister Theresa. She lives somewhere in Canada. My father died in 1992. He had a brother who lived in Cape Town South Africa, Lesley, who also died a couple of years ago. He grew up with his brothers and sisters in an orphanage in the then Transkei after they lost both their parents at a very young age.

Your David-Martha connection is probably linked into my Hercules family. They had moved to Topeka, Shawnee Co. Kansas back in the late 1880. Charles & Lurana "Lue" Hercules even brought his mother Mary Ann Taylor-Hercules and her mother Mary Harper, with them when they came to Topeka. All are buried in the Topeka Cemetery.
mother - Mary Ann 6/13/1819 PA - 5/2/1904 Topeka, Kansas
son - Charles James 4/12/1856 IA - 8/15/1929 Topeka, Kansas
I am a direct descendant of this line and would share any information I have.

Hercules-French Family

Mona,

I received the information on Hercules-French you posted 27 May 2000. Unfortunately, at this point, I don't yet have information on Arthur J. Wheeler. However, VERY pleased to have this new information on Mary French Hercules.

Do you have names and dates, etc., on all 14 of the children of William and Elizabeth French Hercules? That would sure be a help.

Best regards from beautiful Alaska!

Bob Lynn

Thank for the info on these two!

I'm a little confused (my usual state!) about who is the son and daughter of whom in your post. I assume "her son William ..." refers to Catherine Hercules who must have married a Wheeler, and that Ruth Meldrum Deweese is another daughter of Catherine Hercules. Am I correct?

In that William and Elizabeth French Williams are your gggg grandparents, is it possible you have anthing info whatsoever - especially on her father Jeremiah French, especially his parentage, etc.

Thanks again for your help, and best regards from beautiful Alaska,

Bob Lynn
She is 86 now and Dad died 2years ago, they had been married for 65 yrs.
She left Annapolis in 1986 after Dad retired from the Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins, he was a professor of Math.
We moved to Vero Beach also in 1994 when my husband retired from the post office.I have 2 children in Annapolis and one moved here in 1998.So we get up there quite often. Mother is still very active and we take her out every Friday nite to a club where we enjoy the singing and the dancing.
Her sisters and brothers are all still living also. I had met Elsie and Irene when Chad and I were married.I never had a chance to meet his grandparents before they passed away.If you are ever in Florida look her up( or phone her anytime) I am sure she would like to say hello.

Any info you may have on Mothers side of the family especially Mae Hercules would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to write a journal for my children while historians are still living from the family.

Thank so much,
Mary

I don't remember how I found this note originally, but I had pritned it out to check my McCulley records. I'm a decendant of George Harvey McCulley, brother of Millard Fillmore McCulley. According to the entries in a Bible from my line of the McCulley family, Millard Fillmore married a Mary Hurcules in Wheeling, West Virginia on June 3, 1893. If this is your connection, and you have any further information on the McCulley's I would appreciate receiving it. Also willing to share what I have if you are interested.

Anyone still researching this Hercules-French connection?
I have a copy of a 50-page hand-written manuscript of this Hercules family and descendants done in 1978 by Gladys Imogene Hercules in OH. In it, Elizabeth French, wife of William Hercules, is said to be a twin of David French ... twin children of Joseph and Anna Robertson French of Essex Co., NJ. No references, however. I research this French family (and their ancestors) of NJ but have found no other documentation of David having a twin sister, Elizabeth, other than this manuscript.
Happy to share Hercules and/or French information. Am especially interested in uncovering further documentation that this Elizabeth actually belongs to Joseph and Anna Robertson French.
Anyone know of the work of Gladys Hercules? Would be interested in comparing notes.
