HERDE - with an E on end!

Is anyone researching Herde? This is my mother's family and they came from Germany. G'Grandfather was Frank or Franz Herde, his sons were August Ludwig Herde (my grandfather), Otto, and Frank. G'Grandfather had 3 daughters also.
I would welcome correspondence with anyone else researching this line, perhaps we can fill in some gaps for each other.

Herd kilt

The Scottish Herd kilt can be seen at "Scottish Tartans Society World Registry," under Herd,#170. This is the original Herd tartan woven for Councillor R. Herd in 1977, whose family comes from Aberdeen. This is the Herd Hunting Tartan and is in a dark blue, dark green and black with a silver(white) stripe. This was a personal tartan and is now in general use for the surname Herd. The Hunting tartan is appropriate for everyday and casual evening wear.

The Herd Dress Tartan can be seen at "Tartans of Scotland,"
under Herd,#170. This is the same tartan, just in a brighter blue, brighter green and black with a silver(white)stripe. The Dress Tartan is appropriate for formal occasions such as weddings and formal dinner/dances. Please note that color can vary from one dye lot to the next dye lot. The Herd tartan is World Registry (WR)#170, no matter what website you go to.

We have arranged a group discount for the Herd Tartan kilt at the Kirk Wynd Highland House in Kirkcaldy, until November 1, 2008, provided we have a minimum order of 10 kilts. Contact details are on their website. Please ask for Sheena, as she is handling our group order. Each kilt is 220 British Pounds, 8 yards, 13 oz., pure wool and made to measure. Ladies kilted skirts that fall just below the knee are 175 British Pounds, trews (tartan trousers) are 150 British Pounds. Other tartan items are available as well. You need to contact Sheena, arrange the payment, get the measuring chart, fill it out and send it back. This is an excellent price and we thank the Kirk Wynd Highland House for their discount.

David Herd/Hurd and Heather Petit/e marriage

David Herd/Hurd had a "Herd" tartan woven for his wedding to Heather Petit/e. Who is he and how does he connect to Scotland? I can't find this marriage in Scotland, even after much help from GROS(General Register Office of Scotland.) The tartan was collected by Stuart Davidson who died in 1978. All of Stuart Davidson's notes about tartans were given to the Scottish Tartan Authority. Does anyone know of him?

Hey Still looking for any information on my father or his family. His name was William Lacy Herd Jr. He was born 4/3/1943 in Shawnee, OK and passed on 12,30,1989 in Houston, TX. I was adopted by mother's family when I was an infant so never met him and know very little about him and even less about his family. I do know he was in the Milatary for a while. I believe the navy His Service # was 372-32138and think he may have been enlisted through St. Louis, Missouri. After the military he was employed as a truck driver. I have that he was working for T.E. Misers in 1983 and then was working for Acme out of Louisiana in 1988. This information was given by my biological mother and I am not sure how accurate it is. Any one with any information on him or his family I would greatly appreciate it or if someoe can just direct me to a free site that I can dig information with the SS#, service# ect.. I would be greatful.

I am researching the Herd/Hurd families of Clay and Owsley Counties that came from Hancock County. Several of the Herd/Hurd family members who served in the 1st Tenn Cav migrated to Kentucky because they had family there. Elijah Herd that married Betsy Shoot/Shoopman and William Herd that married Rebecca Hudson I suspect were brothers and probably were the Children of Elijah Herd that married into the Walling family. I am writing a story on Col. Andrew Herd and his brother Capt. Joseph F. Herd for our next newsletter. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sherry Baker Frazier
President Owsley County Kentucky Hist.
Stela Herd, my bio-grandmother...need help finding her

Hi all, I'm new to these message boards. I hope the Herd family is small enough that someone might be able to help me out here.

My dad was Adopted in 1950, the only information we have about his birth-mom is that her name is/was Stela Herd. She had him in Arkansas, and she went to the University of Misouri. Herd would have been her maiden name, so if she married her name would have probably changed.

Let me know if you've heard of this Herd(pun intended ;-) I'd really appriciate any help. I would love to find my biological relatives on my dad's side.

Martha Herd

Per verbal family history, in the early 1800s the families of Daniel Bowles and Martha Herd came with a group of settlers from Hamburg, Germany to Clay Co., KY. It is said that the Bowles and Herd families settled on joining farms and as adults Daniel and Martha married. The story further goes that Daniel and Martha had a son, Daniel Garrett Bowles who was born about 1849 in Clay Co., KY. This Daniel Bowles Married first Elizabeth Bennett and had five children before she died. Elizabeth had a sister Margaret who married Will Gray and they had a daughter Nancy Jane Gray. Sometime after Daniel Garrett Bowles's first wife Elizabeth died he married Nancy Jane Gray (his wife's niece) I am looking to validate ancestors of these people. C. Bowles
