Pat,
I am not a Herdegen relative, but I have family photographs you may like for your project. Briefly, my aunt Mary (Mary Kaiser) was William Sr.'s second wife. I have photos of Bill Sr. and first wife, Mary Knoll; family group photo of Bill Sr., second wife, Mary Kaiser; his children and their spouses plus Father George, about 1968; Bill Sr., second wife, Mary Kaiser, his grandchildren about 1968; wedding photos of Bill Sr., second wife, Mary Kaiser which include best man, Jimmy Herdegen, maid of honor, me, bridesmaid, Mary Ellen Westerkamp. If interested, let me know. Will send e-mail to you. Also have home movies but unable to load on youtube ... so far. Have photos and articles about Judge James Geroulis. Bill Sr. was personal bailiff to Judge Geroulis.

I have been working on my family history but have run out of ancestors! So I try to help others. Bill III certainly favors his father and his grandfather.

Herdeg family in Blanco County, Texas

I have a short list of Herdegs who once lived in Blanco County, Texas. I am trying to connect them.

Joseph Herdeg d. 22 Sep 1893
his wife, Catrina/Catherine E. Givans (Givens?)
their marriage date 18 May 1875
Frank Andrew Herdeg, their son, DOB 15 May 1877 Blanco Co.

Mary Herdig married John Harris 28 June 1896 in Blanco County

Clarence A. Herdeg married Lucille Kollman between 1920 and 1938 in Blanco County.

Catherine ? married ? Herdeg, had a son, Albert D. Herdeg DOB ca. 1888. Catherine remarried to William T. Owens about 1897. Albert appears with his widowed mother in the 1920 Blanco County census, and with his wife Julia Oglesby in the 1930 Jefferson County census (Beaumont, TX).

Does anyone know how these folks are connected?

my father George Edward Herdeg was the son of Ambrose Edward Herdeg. Ambrose was 1 of 5 brothers from Iowa. Ambrose and Leo moved to Chicago and that is where my father George Edward was raised and buried. One brother was Leo George Herdeg. Their mother name was Rosa R Herdeg (nee?) and George C. Herdeg. They are both buried in Michigan. I too feel there are two sets of Herdegs. Originally from Iowa and then out east. I am looking for up Leo Herdeg estate. He was married to Marie (nee?) they had no children. If you are related to one of the other three brothers who ended up in Iowas please contact me.

My great grandfather Chistofer Herdegen emigrated to the US at the time of the civil war. He apparently came expressly to enlist in the Union Army. He setteled on Philadelphia. I understand that he was a lawyer and specialized in international law. My aunts have a Herdegen or Herr von degen family crest. I don't know where it came from. When I was in college my German porfessor recognizd the name and called me Miss Herr degen, so I think that derivation is accurate. Would it be ok with you to give me your e- mail address, so that we could correspond directly. I have trouble locating things on these message boards.

The family goes way back and were nobility. There are some interesting names in the family way back that connect to higher nobility of today. Where did your family settle in the US?

The town I lived at from 1975 until 1993 has a pharmacy, the head-pharmacists (Sp?) name is herdegen. The Pharmacy is in Uttenreuth, Germany.
Just thought I'd write that since the name is familiar to me.

Dee

Joseph and Barbara HERDEGEN

Hi cousin!
I am also a descendant of Joseph Herdegen and Barbara (aka Bertha) Roith, through their son John. My husband and I have been working to find out the details regarding their immigration to the States, but had reached a bit of an impasse. The only scrap of information we had was a document (perhaps a marriage certificate) which is in the possesion of William Herdegen of Chicago, which states the birthplace of both Joseph and Barbara as "Bairen, Germany". Could that be Bayern? I don't know. It's something that I'm currently investigating. But as you're leaving in just a few weeks, maybe we could join forces and work out the puzzle together?
Just this week another clue has surfaced: my husband found Joseph and family listed on the 1900 census in Illinois. Joseph's immigration date is listed as 1882, and Barbara's as 1883. Perhaps there is an online resource for viewing immigration records for those years. Another possibility is to send off for their marriage records from Chicago, Cook County, IL. (to view their marriage details online, try http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marri...). Hopefully, the full certificate will give the names of their parents, and their birthplaces. Also there is a descendant of a Karl Herdegen named Robert Liebl who has written a book on the Herdegen line, perhaps he knows of our ancestral home.
Well, we should talk! I don't want to waste your time with the stuff you already know, so let me just say that I have complete details on my direct line to Joseph and Barbara, and varied amounts of detail on all of their other children: Rev. Joseph, Jr., Margaret, Mary, John, George, Frank, and Sophia. I'd be delighted to share, just let me know how much you want on whom. And of course, I'm just itching to know all about you and your line!

Hi! I managed to stumble onto this site by accident, but am fortunate I did. I am of the Herdegen line beginning, as far as I am able to discover, with Joseph and Barbara Herdegen who came to the Chicago area around the turn of the century. I am planning a trip to Germany in May and thought that it would be interesting to visit and do some family history work in the "fatherland". If anyone has suggestions of where I should go, please let me know.
Thank you!
