Thank You Aaron for posting a note. I would really appreciate any help that you can give me.
My grandfather, Richard Bruno Herold, was born Dec.10, 1870. His mothers name was Emmelia and his fathers name was Bruno.
His siblings were Bruno, Lenno,Emily and Mary. I believe there was one other brother, but I don't know his name. Grandpa left Germany in July of 1892. He came in through Montreal, Canada and then through Michigan. He married my gandma Mary Jane Beebe from Sparta Michigan and lived here in Oregon. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. If you want you can contact me at shortjp@msn.com. Thanks so much fore helping. First real possible lead.

Hello!
My Gr-Gr-Granny Rosina Herold (Klein) came to New York from Bofsheim, Mosbach. That is just a couple miles up the road from Adelsheim. Other Herolds are found nearby. Some over the next hill there in Sindolsheim, others just south of Adelsheim in Sennfeld. We are all related somehow.

Ben,
I have Max Herold in Chicago in 1900 and 1910 with wife Regis who appears to be his 2nd wife as he is about 28 years her senior. He said that he was born in Germany in Apr 1840 and came to the US in 1850. I found a Max Herold in the death notices for Cook Co., IL on 20 Dec 1916 in the Chicago area. Regis said that she was born in 1868 in Austria and came to the US in 1885. In 1880 in NYC I also found a Max Herold, occupation tailor, born in Wurttenberg, Ger. with a wife Henrietta, born in NY in 1849. I have checked and so far have found nothing to connect Max to Adam Herold and wife Mary Porter Herold who resided in the Baltimore, MD area. Adam and Mary had one son and the rest of their children were daughters. Please email me at luv_u_suzieq@yahoo.com to continue this discussion.

Mark was my dad. I am the oldest of three girls he was forced to leave behind. We are all grown up now but we will always miss our dad! I am glad others miss him too. He was taken so early but in his short 27 years of life, he managed to make quite a Mark in his corner of the world. I'd rather remember his life than his tragic death. My life has already defined as before he was killed and after.... It is a fact that is impossible to forget! It is a void that never goes away... I feel my dad with me though, his spirit, his love - but I'd give almost anything to hug him and feel him hold me & listen to his voice. I do not wish to remember his death - I choose to remember HIM! Thanks for the posting - it has led me to answers that I did not know were there.

Hi Bunny! That is what we used to call you. This is Hedy. The oldest of Mark's baby girls. I am 32 now. It gives me GREAT peace to read what you shared about him. I have always had that sick curiousty & worry about his last moments. I was so young when it happened I didn't know the questions that I would later have. It helps me so much. I am at work and I decided to google my dads name. Now I am at work crying my eyes out in a good way. Even though it happened when I was seven - that terrible dark void of missing him has never been filled. Especially because i was so protected from the truth for so long. I mean , I know he was killed but what do you tell a 7 year old. I just remember feeling so sad and so scared by how sad everyone felt for me. My mom & sisters keep him alive. erika has a 2 year old son now and he has our dad's facial structure. We talk about our dad now. We didn't talk much about him when I was still little but I am sure it was very painful for my mom to revisit. Now, we talk about him as adults. I am so glad you shared that. Not much can someone feel better about such a crappy thing....Thank you Bunny. I'd like to hear more if you are up to sharing.

Most of the early settlers of Pennsylvania spelled their surname Herrold or Harrold, although there are at least nine ways I've seen it spelled. I have several Herolds that immigrated to PA in the early 1700s. Went to Berks County, basically spelling name Herrold, then a group migrated to Westmoreland County and name changed to Harrold (some clung to Herrold). If you think this is relevant to your search, let me know at Lsharr@connext.net

My line does not descend from Simon, but rather from Jacob, Cornelius, George, Hans Michael and George Christopher (the first to migrate to USA. about 1743). You do realize that that area of Germany/France passed back and forth between the two countries per treaties between the rulers. That doesn't make the citizens German or French does it? There are many Herrolds who were born in England and Ireland, but history shows they maintained their German culture and language. They Irish or German? Good question!!!!!!!

Who are you? You are tracking my family tree, with George Herrold and wife, Anna Magdalina Muller,(my grandfather, 10 times removed) being as far back as I have been able to go. First immigrant was George Christopher Herrold, Sr., who is buried in Berks County, PA. His children are buried in the Herrold (sic Harrold) Cemetery, Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pa. (outside of Greensburg, Pa.)Based upon your spelling, you must be one of those Snyder County Herrolds. Western PA/Eastern OH changed the spelling to Harrold. I have the complete George Christopher Herrold, Jr. tree up to 1933.

I don't know where you and Dr. Fisher got the spelling, i.e.,"Hoerold", but I have only been able to find one spelling of the family name that even comes close. "Jeorge Michael Herould" whose name was entered on the roster of the Ship Albany, landing in Phila. on 2 Sept. 1749. Because George Michel Herold was ill during the first swearing of the oaths to the government, and unable to attend personally, his name was entered by a non-German speaking, probably poorly educated, Clerk of Courts. There are two additional listings of Geo. Michael Herold pertaining to his being qualified to enter PA.(Also see PA. Early Census Index, 1749 ID# PAS1a1542795). Also question where the idea that the Herold or Herrold families came from France. Clearly records show they were born, raised and immigrated from Erphacht, Wirtemberg, and Marbach of the Palatinate of Baden-Wurttemberg and from Steinheim of the North Rhine-Westpalia Palatinate. The Rhine Palatinate was divided and the land west of the Rhine was ceded to France in 1801 (after the families had already immigrated) and then returned to Germany in 1814.

This past week I was in Columbiana County, Ohio, and met several elderly men from the Zion Hill Church. One was named Wilmer Swope, who made several references to a Don Harrold who lived in E. Palestine, who was knowledgeable about the Harrold and Oberholtzer families. I wondered if you are that person! I did find some burials that weren't listed in any of the records. After I get things sorted out, I'll e-mail you.

Something is mixed up in the records of your John Herrold line. It appears two sets of first cousins married each other, each of the four a grand child of Geo. Chris. Herrold, Jr.(sic Harrold) Barbara Herrold, daughter of John Herrold and Barbara Altman married Christopher Herrold, son of Christopher Herrold and Eliz. Painter, Christopher being the brother of John. John Henry Herrold, son of John Herrold and Barbara Altman married Nancy Herrold, daughter of Christopher Herrold and Eliz. Painter. As before, John and Christopher were brothers, and sons of Geo. Christopher Herrold, Jr. Is this record correct?????
By the way, the Altman family lived in the settlement with the Harrolds in Hempfield Township, PA. The name appears on many documents, sometimes spelled Altmann.

Hello Linda, I am wondering if you are still receiving messages from this site. I think there may be a connection from your family line and mine through the name Schultze (our line spelled Schulz or Schultz). My great granfather was John Christoph Busch from Kuhlhausen Prussia (Germany). His sister, Frederike Gretchen Busch (1844), was married to Christian Wilhelm Schulz in 1864. They immigrated to Texas in 1870.

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows two older people and three young children and is labeled on the front "Celeste, Grandma, Burkle, (unreadable), (likely Grandpa)". And on the back is written the "Herold family". Some small child has also written "Dorothy May Herold". The photo was likely taken in Indiana or Kentucky. If these are your ancestors, please contact me.

Hi Linda,
Re-read the messages and have no idea how I read into them that Mark had a brother responding. LOL. Chalk it up to a busy day or not wearing my glasses. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused. I do remember Mark having an older sister and him living where you said, so sure we are talking about the same person. I knew your brother from high school. We met the first year we went to Anaheim High, and dated for a while when we were juniors. I had contact with him for a few years after graduating, but lost contact and found out while checking out "Classmates" of his passing. For alot of reasons, knowing Mark will always be a blessing to me. I would like to communicate more, but some information I feel is inappropriate to put on a message board. I am not sure if I can leave a email address on here, but will try. I have an account with aol and my screen name is ginerkap.

thank you
Kathleen
ginerkap@aol.com

Kimberly, my family line begins about 100 years before yours. If your grandparents are a live, get information from them on their parents, etc. If not, get copies of their death certificates. The information contained on a death certificate can help direct you where to look next.

Keep in mind, the information on the death certificate is only as good as the person who is supplying the information.

Through Ancestry you can research the census records. If your family came to US then in the 1900 and 1910 census it indicates when they came, so this too can help you find information. Direct you to arrival records in US. Ellis Island can provide some information. My Glass family came to the US long before Ellis Island was the main throughway in to the US.

Also don't forget to look up obits in the newspapers. Unfortunately large cities do a really bad job of putting any information about the deceased in the papers. However, small towns give a story. Today, where I live, obits cost a small fortune... over 100-200 dollars and families that cannot afford it, do not have any listing at all, except the newspaper prints that they have died, but no family information is included anymore. Still the time frame you will need, there will be information, all of which will help you in your search.

Remember, sometimes you will find more information on a brother or sister to the one person you are researching, but parents are the same and so are the grandparents. Once I found where a brother came from and found the family in Germany and traced them back to 1500... So don't over look siblings when you hit a brick wall.

Best of luck... Sue
My maternal side are Herold's. Census takers were not always bright and some immigrants and farmers did not know how to spell their last name, much less read or write. Some census has our name Harold and my great aunt has Frances spelled wrong.

If they came in through NY, they passed through Castle Garden. Ellis Island wasn't opened until 1890's. Some of mine came in through New Orleans and up Mississippi River to WI.
