Notes: W. H. Herrick, 85, Dies in Yonkers. William Hale Herrick, 85, educator and consultant chemist, and father of Russell T. Herrick, associate editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, died suddenly yesterday at his home in Yonkers, N. Y. In the 25 years from 1875 to the turn of the century. Prof Herrick was an instructor of chemistry in a number of colleges. For twenty years subsequently he was a consultant chemist in New York City. Of old New England ancestry, Prof. Herrick was born in Essex, Vt., and was graduated with the class of 1871 from Williams College. He was one of the oldest alumni of Williams at the time of his death, and was an ardent participant in class and college functions. After leaving Williams, he studied for two years at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, and then taught for many years at Grinnell College, Ia. Later he was a professor of chemistry at Penn State College and at Rollins College, Winter Haven, Fla. During the World War he was in the government service as instructor of munitions inspectors in a special government school at Penn's Grove, N. J. For several years Prof. Herrick had lived in retirement with his daughter, Miss Bertha M. Herrick, at Yonkers, He was an active follower of public events and frequently contributed articles of opinion to New York newspapers. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Besides his son and daughter. Prof. Herrick leaves his wife, Mrs. Jennie Tuttle Herrick.
