I am soory, but I made a couple of mistakes in my last post about Hiram and Cora. Cora's mother's first name was spelled Rhoda, not Roda, and Arba was not their child. He was George B. Herriman's son, who was a son of Edward C. Herriman, a brother of Lemuel, father of Hiram.

Sorry about the confusion.

Dan Harriman
Orange, Texas

Hello;

Not sure if you have this info or not, but Hiram B. Herriman was born July 23, 1852, and died Dec 4, 1900, by a self inflicted gunshot wound while temporarily insane, is what his death certificate states. Hiram is a lateral line of mine, and I am interested in his ancestry, especially if information on his grandfathers and great-grandfathers is available.

Cora M. Strong was born June 16, 1860 in Michigan. She was the daughter of James Strong, born in Ohio, and Roda J. Moon, born in Penna. Cora died Jan 9, 1918 of pneumonia. They had two children. Nellie and Arba.

Hope that helps some,

Dan Harriman
Orange, Texas

I found a Stephen Herriman who bought land in Ringgold Co., Iowa on March 6, 1856. He is near my Bever family, and one of the Beavers, Jacob, married Betsy Herriman in Fountain Co., Indiana in 1831. I'm looking for Betsy's family. There was a Moses Herriman in Fountain Co., but I've not been able to connect. Would you have any info? I believe Betsey says she was born in Maine in 1812 in the 1860 Census.

The Montgomery Co. Indiana (right next to Fountain Co.) Original Entry Book lists Moses Harriman land in Township 19 - Range 6 - NE1/4 bought 10-28-1825 also additional land bought on 2-13-1826.

I am interested in Moses Herriman because of my gr-gr-gr-grandmother was Betsy Herriman who married Jacob Beaver on 2-24-1831 in Montgomery Co. IN. I have been to the Montgomery Co. Library and also to Veedersburg. I am not sure how Betsy is related. She was born about 1813.

The 1850 Census in Wayne township, Montgomery Co. lists a Moses Herriman Jr (wife Emeline)and his parents (Moses and Lucretia Heriman) live next door to him. Check the diff. spellings! This info. was from a typewritten transcription. I have not seen the original census.

1870 census, Cedar Township, Callaway Co., MO:
pg. 277, #98-98: John H. Thomas, age 28, farmer, REV $200, PV $195, b. MO; Nancy E. Thomas, age 22, keeping house, b. MO; Charles A. Thomas, age 4, at home, b. MO; George R. Thomas, age 2, at home, b. MO; Christina Herriman, age 64, Making Home, b. MO [this is Nancy's mother]

John and Nancy (Herriman) Thomas are in the same township and county in 1880, with 6 children, including a son, only 9 months old.

By 1900 they have moved to Campbell Township, Polk Co. MO

I do not know anything about the lineage of John Thomas, but Nancy is a Harryman, daughter of Hugh and Christina (Zumwalt) Harryman and granddaughter of John Culport Harryman. Does that agree with your records? At one time there was an online Zumwalt genealogy, courtesy Paul@zumwalts.com, at: www.zumwalts.com - no sources cited; If that link is still valid, and it still does not show sources, consider all info as tentative since no sources were cited.

Would you be willing to share your source for the marriage date of Nancy and John? Thanks!

SueB
Harriman Family Association

Moses and Lucretia Harriman

My goal is to find parents of Levit and Nancy (Pernal) Harriman. I found my ggg grandparents Levit (age 51), and Nancy Harriman (age 46), in the 1850 Census for Cain Township, Fountain County, Indiana listed with his children: Lucretia (age 15), Lewis (age 13), Jerremiah (age 11), Ann (age 10), Moses (age 8), and Samuel (age 5). Samuel the youngest listed is my gg grandfather born in Veedersburg, IN. Samuel married Mary Elizabeth Stevenson 19 Sep 1870 in Indiana. Samuel and Mary Elizabeth's children were: Walter, Ala, Francis Marion, Pearl, John, Harley, James Howard, Anna, and Verna. I have photos of all of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth's children. I want to share the photos with others who are interested.

The children you mention in your post about John W & Elizabeth (Spurlock) Herriman were my grandmother's siblings. She was Delia Meranda, b- 1893 AR, d- 1969 OH. Delia, (b 1893 AR, d- 1969 OH) married Arthur Seals and had 4 children. In birth order, they were: Fannie who died young, Gracie Irene, Ethic Miley, born blind & died age 8, and Verna who is still living. Am pretty sure all 4 children were born in Madison Co., AR. Arthur was part Cherokee.
Delia 2nd mar'd in OK to Adam Stickney and their daughter Lucille, (my mother & also still living) was born in OK before Adam moved the family to Ohio which is where he was originally from. Adam and Delia had 3 sons born in Ohio...Adam Jr, John & David.. all deceased now.

I would love to get exact birth and death dates and places for Flora, who is my g-g-g grandmother. I know she was born in 1840 either in NH or ME, to Manoah Harriman and Reliance Small Whitney. In 1856, she married Henry Clay Howard. Flora probably died between 14 Jan 1882 (when she wrote an entry in her daughter's autograph book) and 12 May 1883 (when the rest of the family moved to MT). Does anyone know anything about her? I would love to know the names of all her children, if anyone has them.

Ken ,
This is very interesting to find a connection out there. I haven't verified all of my info either. A lot of what i do have is from my husbands Aunt Mary and a bit from searching the internet.Mary recently gave me more info on a John and Elizabeth(spurlock) Their children were Sarah Dollie Evannie Walter William and Dave. Does this go with anything you have? If so what and where is the connection to the Herrimans i have traced so far? I have been looking through the census but am having a few problems with all the districts because i don't have addresses and goodness knows there are a lot of districts per county. Names of townships have changed since then. I had no problem tracing the Ogden family. Millard Herrimans wifes family .(my husbands grandparents) I've traced them to 1338 in the Netherlands. The Herrimans seem to be a more elusive group. As is my ancestors , but i am enjoying the research. I find it to be very interesting and something i can share with my sons. As far as Shaderick goes....we're not sure if he is the father of the right John either it was just the only name we got to come up. So any help would be great. I can give you what info i have as i receive it and we can compare notes. Until later.... Good luck ! Darcy

Is it possible that during the time the census was done , that Hugh and Mary may have had a niece living with them? From my records Mary was the oldest of 6 children. The 6 children produced 49 children, of those 49 there were four girls with the name Elizabeth which could have been shortened to Eliza.I don't know but it is a possibility.

Herriman Y-DNA porject started

A Harriman/Herriman Surname Y-DNA project has been started at www.familytreeDNA.com.
Y-DNA is the genetic signature passed down unchanged from father to son - it cannot be inherited by females, as only the Y chromosome is involved. This makes it ideal for tracing the male ancestral line. For genealogical purposes only so-called "junk" DNA is used - it has no known purpose and cannot reveal anything about medical history or personal characteristics. Occasionally, mutations occur and the signature changes very slightly in one person. This means that after many generations, there will be a slight difference in the signature. Men who are closely related (within a few generations) should have identical signatures. Those who are related much further back will have signatures that differ in only one or two markers. The tests are most useful to either prove or disprove a known relationship between two men and to help determine their most recent comment ancestor (MRCA). Standard tests examine 12, 25 or 37 markers. The MRCA can be determined more accurately with more markers, but the cost is greater.

By joining the Harriman Surname project you should be able to determine whether you are related to one of the known lines of Harrimans and also help establish the Harriman Haplogroup - that is, the area of the world where the lines originated.

To join or for more information go to www.familytreeDNA.com and search for the Harriman project.
Also, see the Harriman Family Association web site at www.harriman-family.org.
