Looking for any information about the HERRIOT family, goldsmiths of Fleet Street, London in the 17th and 18th century and one-time Crown Jewellers to James I. Their descendants were granted the manor at South Wootton, Norfolk in the 1700s. The surname appears to have "daughtered out" in this line and there is a connection with the COE family of South Wootton (later King's Lynn).

The HERRIOT tomb at South Wootton contains the inscription:
'Within this vault lies the body of Charles Heriott, Doctor of Lynn who departed this life June [??] in the year of Our Lord 1706 aged [?]7 years. Also here lieth the body of John Heriot, second son of Doctor Charles Heriott who departed this life June 17th in the year of Our Lord 1728.
[a verse which is undecipherable]
Francis Hardyman COE late of Kings Lynn who departed this life February 8, 1841 aged 67 years also of Mary Maria wife of Francis Hardyman COE who departed this life March 15 aged 75. Herriot Firth COE died July 12th aged 68 years'

The connection between the HERRIOTs and the COEs remains unknown, but up until the present day the COE descendants have had HERRIOT / Herriott / Heriot / etc. as a middle name.
