I am looking for Harschlip family and just ran across a Casper Herschel with about 4 or 5 children that match what I have. MAYBE they are connected??? I know that my aunt and mother have said there was a diagreement in the family and some moved and changed the spelling. But dont know exactly when. I have found that they were possibly from East Prussia.
I have a Harschlip family tree website. Feel free to check it out.
Do you have a Tree site?
Would love to check it out.

Do you know where in Poland? I have traced my Herschels back to Bukovina and Cernauti which were in the Austrian Empire and which today are part of the Ukraine but which were once in Poland. Family lore says they were originally from Germany but I have not made that connection yet.
Interested to know if there is a connection...

My great-grandfather was Ephroim Hirschel, he married Sarah Papier. They likely lived in Lubaczow Poland and they had six children. Five came to the U.S., Phillip Hirschel (born 1896, my grandfather), Charlie Herschel, Hannah Hirschel (1882), Samuel Herschel (1886), and Rose Hirschel (1890). The names changed between Herschel and Hirschel during immigration. One of the children (still looking for the name) didn't make it out before the war. He gave up his boat ticket to my grandmother, and was later sent to a Russian concentration camp. He eventually made it to Israel where he started a family.

Sounds like my granduncle Sam and grandaunt Esther. Fannie born in 1910 sounds like it should be Connie. Sam was one of 5 siblings that came over from Lubaczow Poland (my grandfather Philip Hirschel being another). They lived in NJ and had three kids, Connie, Sidney and Lillian. I have not been able to find any current descendants of this family. If anyone has more information, let me know.

Charles Herschel and Clara Dara Herschel

I am looking for any information on my Great Great Grandparents Charles and Clara Dara Herschel. This is how the spelling is on everything I can find in Nevada up to 1900, the German People were famous for chancing the spelling of their names or adjusting them so they would be easier for the American people to spell. Charles Herschel was born in Germany in March of 1839, he arrived in the United States in 1859. Clara Dara Schenner , ( this is what the spelling looks like on her Death Certificate) but when interviewed on their Ranch in Nevada in 1905 her brother was staying with her and his name was Ed Shermar ( as you know people never asked for the correct spelling and spelled names as they sounded, I think this is what creates so many problems for us with the census and any information we look for. Clara Dara Schenner (Schermer, Shermar or anything close I guess) was born in Saxony, Germany in Oct 1845, she arrive in the United States in 1860. In 1900 census it states that they were married 20 years. I am assuming on or both and previous marriges. Clara stated on these census that she had given birth to 6 children who must have been born back east( and 4 were either lost in child birth for died very young or during the trip to Nevada) , we think Ohio. In her obituary she is said to still have 3 sisters living in Ohio. I always heard that they came from Cincinnati, Ohio to Nevada. My Great Grandmother Lillian , Clara's daughter was born in Nevada. My Great Grandmother's brother Arthur was I believe born either in Ohio or along they way.I don't really have any other information. I hope that someone out there has some information that will help me.

Clemens Herschel, hydraulic expert, probable Massachusetts resident early 1900's

I just posted an Obituary from the New York Times in which there was a mention of Clemens Herschel, who was dead by this mention in 1924. ( I recommend that you search for newspaper mentions of him in Massachusetts or an Obituary in Mass. newspapers. I have no further information on this family, hope this helps you. I excerpt as follows:
*James L. Tighe Obituary, New York Times, Monday, April 17, 1947, page 24, column 2: (posted 3/28/03)
"JAMES L. TIGHE, 82, ENGINEER, IS DEAD
Head of Holyoke, Mass., Gas & Electric Commission--Aide of State Health Council
Special to THE NEW YORK TIMES.

HOLYOKE, Mass., April 8--James Laurence Tighe, consulting civil engineer, chairman of the municipal gas and electric commission, Hampden County engineer and member of the Massachusetts Public Health Council, died today in the Providence Hospital after an illness of several weeks. His age was 82.

***During his vacations from college he worked under the late J. Waldo Smith, later chief engineer on the New York Catskills Water Supply, and under the late Clemens Herschel, hydraulic expert.***

He was Water Department engineer of Holyoke from 1892 to 1911 and City Engineer from 1898 to 1911. Since then he had been in practice as a consulting hydraulic and sanitary engineer, in later years as head of the firm of Tighe & Bond, Holyoke.
Chairman of the Gas and Electric Department since 1928, Mr. Tighe was a member of that commission and of the State Public Health Council since 1923. He represented the Commonwealth of Massachussets as an expert witness in damage cases arising from construction of the Quabbin Reservoir."
Source: The New York City Public Library

Herschel

I too are trying to start a family tree. Our Herschel' came from Hannover Germany, in the 1700' and settled in England. They left Germany because of the Austro Hungarian War.Our Herschel was Sir Frederik Wilhelm Herschel who discovered the planet Uranus in the 1700's.He had lived in Slough, in England. He had one son named John, who then in turn had nine children. Wilhelm had a large family and did disperce throughout Europe. Our spelling got changed in 1933 when my father-in-law was born in Dublin Ireland. I myself am looking for a Sydney Herschel, we believe he was born in England but can not find any record of him. If i can be of any help please contact me be e-mail. Tracey Herchell

Dear Jim,

I will have to find my notes, on the Herschel's, but of the top of my head there are about 5 other siblings of Wilhelm Frederik Herschel. One was Karoline the astrominer, Johann Alexander who left Germany with Wilhelm, Jacob that was an Conducter for the Royal Amsterdam Syphony. There was also a Dietric and two sisters. During the war they seemed to have moved around a great deal. And were offered a settlement to move around europe. I have found a number of Herschel, and Herschell's in Great Britain, that say that there background is from Poland. So there might also be a conection. There was also a Sir Herschell in the 1930's. Hope this is a little bit of help. The Polish Herschell's came from Gadamsk, sorry for my spelling

I would be very interested in finding out whether
my family has a link to your family tree. I'm
really impressed that your tree goes back 400
years! I've only been able to document 111 years.
Please contact me directly at my e-mail which
is reeltime@iag.net. Thanks for replying.

More info on Herschel's

Dear Tracey,
I think you might have put me on the right track
and I thank you for your help. My wife and I
both came from families that never discussed
their heritage and that is a real shame. Until
last week I never knew my paternal grandfather's
first name nor my paternal grandmother's maiden
name.I've since discovered that my grandfather
was Michael Herschel. I was always told that
my father's name was changed when he got his
US Citizenship. I now have a copy of his citizen-
ship papers and I found that it was his first
name that was changed from Jon to John. Not his
last name! A copy of his Social Security appli-
cation which predates his Citizenship shows his
father's last name as Herschel. I'm now conviced
that Herschel was our family Surname! I also
have info concerning the Provence where he came
to the US from, reverted from Polish to German
rule several times. If you would be willing to
share your notes on the "Herschels" it would be
gratefully appreciated.
Some info I've uncovered on Sir William Herschel
indicates that in Hannover,Germany he was known as
Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel.
The other astronomer in the family besides John
was William's sister Caroline Lucretia Herschel.
She was born in Hannover Mar 16, 1750. William
brought her to England where she worked as his
assistant. After William's death she returned
to Hannover where she died on Jan 9,1848.
This geneology work is like being a mystry
detective!
Regards - Jim Herschel

Tracy,
Thank you for your reply. I've often wondered
if there was any connection of my family to Sir
William Herschel and his son Sir John. Your
comment regarding the large family that dispersed
throughout Europe gives me some encouragement
along those lines. By the way, several years ago
I saw the grave markers of both Sir William
and Sir John who are buried in Westminister
Cathedral. Sir John also had a daughter who
was a reknowned Astronermer. Happy hunting!

I don't know if this will be any help but I recently
got the following info regarding my Father, Jon Herschel.
He immagrated to US about 1912 with his mother. Info I haveis that
his Father's name was Michael Herschel and his Mother's maiden name was
Agnes Matuszczak. I remember my father telling me that he came from the
Provence of Galicia in Poland. This Provence was one that changed from
Polish rule to German rule several times. I know it must be frustrating
to you in finding info about ancesters whou seldom
talked about their roots. Happy hunting. Jim

Herschel from Nassau, Germany

Hello from DownUnder,

I'm starting research of my ancestors from Germany. one of my GGrandfather's was Wilhelm Herschel apparently from Rudesheim, Nassau, Germany. He was born about 1835 and his brother Nicholas was born about 1841, Their parents were Balkazar Herschel and Catherine or Katrina Hei (or Hoi).

Wilhelm married an Elizabeth Miller from Lorsch, Germany here in Australia in 1868 so obviously he immigrated out here sometime before that.

Does anyone have a connection to this Herschel line?

Thanks.

Jim, Please forgive me for taking so long to respond to you. I do appreciate your response. Still I have found nothing on my grandfather. I on the 1870 census he was in NV. Death Cert. States from German, wife Clara schenner ? also from germany. Both naturlized but how they got here, probably about 1840-60. Settle in Ohio first then on a covered wagon to nv. Says had family inohio in obit. same as g. mother. Kind of stuck at this point. Any information you have would be very helpful. Thanks again and please forgive my tardiness. Take care.
Charles and Clara Herschel

I am still trying to find information on my Greatgreat grandparents. Charles and Clara Herschel. I know they had family back east in Cincinnati as it states that in their obit. It says my grandmother Clara had 5 children however, my Grandmother Lilyan and brother Arthur who died when he was 20 survived. Apparently they crossed the plains in a covered wagon and settled in Humboldt County, NV. A sister is mentioned named pearl, but no last name. She married into the Hummel family in 1909. Anyone out there that has any info. I would be so greatful. Thanks mary
