Cyrus Hershberger was born on Nov 20th 1844, in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, PA. He was raised on the homestead farm near the present Quemahoning Dam, the eldest of 6 children. Cyrus was 23 years old when his father Daniel died. He cont'd to farm the land which in 1884 was reported to be a farm of 162 acres in a good state of cultivation. (History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton County, Waterman and Watkins of Chicago 1884)

Circa 1870 he married Chistena Weaver who was born on Feb 20, 1848 and died Sept 4 1913.

In 1879 Cyrus was a member of the Thomas Mennonite Church, was ordained to the ministry and served the Thomas Church for eight years. About this same time (1887) Cyrus purchased a tract of land improved by a 2 story frame home on the present Hershberger Lane near somerset pike. This land offers a beatiful view.

Later his son, Edwin managed the farm giving it the name Spruce Hill Dairy Farm and Cyrus retired living on the farm for the remainder of his life.

On May 21st 1926, while in johnstown, PA. delivering farm produce, he dies unexpectedly. His death is reported in the Herald of Truth:

He was married to Christina Weaver, who died thirteen years ago. he was also Preceded by one son, Daniel, who died at the age of nine years. He is survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters, 39 grandchildren, and nin great-grandchildren. For some time he had some trouble with his heart, but was able to be about. On the day of his death, he went to the city, and while waiting for an auto bus, dropped over and was gone. Many years ago, he united with the Mennonite Church and died in full fellowship with God's people. Funeral services were conducted in the home and in the Thomas Mennonite Church by S. G. Shetler, assisted by J. S. Shoemaker of Freeport, Ill. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the Thomas district, many not being able to get into the building. The body was laid away in the cemetery adjoining the churchyard."
