Hi, Beverly,

I think my ancestry lines have come "full tilt" in this case. The Herzberg's are from a West Prussian line. I would suspect that anyone named Lamb/Wilson would be from the Scottish line - only related to each other by the marriage of my grandparents Giese/Retherford.

As you can see, I have no information on these people in my basic family tree. They were added on by the Ancestry World Tree along with tens of thousands of other people. Try tracing them back to where you find my biographical notes to my somewhat closer relatives.

Sorry I cannot be of much help.

Karla Koeplin Schmidt

Hi, M. Gilbert,

Thank you very much for the tip. I shall try to follow up on it; the coronor's office sounds like the best bet to me.

The MCRR has changed hands a couple of times and even ceased to exist in the form it had in the late 19th century, but I shall give it a try there as well. I have nothing much to lose by doing it!

Thanks again.

Karla Schmidt

I saw on your Ancestry file that you had listed Henry Franklin Lamb and his wife Mary Wilson. They are my great great grandparents. I would be interested in how you are related to them and if we might be related. Would it be possible for me to see your Ancestry file for this family? I would be interested in exchanging family history.
Please contact me at gbshenold@provalue.net

Hi ,
I saw your message about Gustavn Herzberg killed on Michigan Central RR . I don't know if this info will be helpful now since you wrote you note in 2005. You may have already found your answers.
My GreatGrandfather was killed by a train in 1860 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The information about his accidental death was a coronor's report in the newspapers.
You might try writing to the coronor in Michigan and ask that they go back in thier records to see if they have any information. Or maybe write to the Michigan Central RR and ask if they have any records on him.
M. Gilbert

Re: D. L. Dietrich Herzberg - Germany > Iowa

Thanks, Elizabeth! I actually have photos of the tombstones from the Clarinda cemetery. The mystery for me right now involves D. L. (Diedrich) Herzberg's wife. The tombstone has his wife being Elizabeth Herzberg (somewhere I heard her maiden name was Alwine). DOB per the tombstone is 20 Oct 1817, DOD is 29 June 1887. However, Alice Herzberg Stansfield has the German marriage license (from the Ev. Lutheran Church in Hoyerhagen) for D. L. and a Gesche Cordes - and Gesche's dates are almost the same as Elizabeth's (Gesche was born 20 Sept 1817). Has your research turned up any hints as to whether Gesche and Elizabeth are the same person?
Alice also had that D.L.'s parents were Diedrich Christoph (Christian?) Herzberg (1769 - 10 Oct 1846) and Anna Adelheid Meier (21 Mar 1779 - 18 Mar 1848). Both died in Hoyerhagen, Hannover, Germany, and Anna was born there. Does this help you at all?
As always, I am continuing to search for their ancestors, and any help would be appreciated.
kbsgen@yahoo.com

Hi Arlan:
I think your Sophia Herzberg from the 1900 census is the daughter-in-law of my great-great-great grandmother, Gesche Sophia Herzberg. Your Sophia Charlotte Meier (Herzberg) married Albert Heinrich Herzberg in 1866. Albert's parents were Diedrich Luedeke Conrad Herzberg & Gesche Sophia Cordes.

Since posting the original message 3 years ago, I have done some research at the LDS FHS. There I found several censuses (1855, 1858, & 1861) from Hoyerhagen with the family listed. Gesche's maiden name on the 1861 census is "Kohrs" and on the 1855 census is "Cohrs," at least that's how I read the old German script.

I have quite a bit of information on the Herzbergs, largely from the Page County Iowa book (1984) and a book written by Willard Pulkrabek which has a lot about both the Herzberg and Meier lines. I'll be glad to share whatever I have - just let me know.

Kathy
kbsgen at yahoo dot com

Gustavn HERZBERG killed - accident on Michigan Central RR, c. 1890

Gustav HERZBERG was killed in a railroad accident around 1890, perhaps in the West Bay City, Michigan yards of the railroad - but that is only a guess. It is known from the Bay City, Michigan residents register of 1900 that he repaired cars for the MCRR. What kind of accident it was that he fell victim to is, however, unknown.
Does anyone happen to know of a source of records for this type of fatality?

K.
Dear Randy,
Thanks for your reply...I am as stymied as you! It as a fluke that I came up with the name Herzberg, as I did a search and Ricard W. came up on SSI and his mother's maiden name was Schaufus (no first given). My great grandfather's name was August, but don't know if he had any siblings..but on the Waltham MA city listing, there is a Louis (about the same age as my ggf) mentioned for a couple of years, then gone. He could be a brother, but as yet cannot locate any info on him. I have noticed that the given names in the family tend to repeat (not too much originality on the German side); and August's son Arthur (my grandfather) named his only daughter Pauline..coincidence?? Who knows. The info I have is that August's wife, Ida Seidel, came to America from Bremen through New York on the SS Rhien in December 1852. However, I have yet to find where and on what ship August arrived, but his nauralization papers say July 1852. On August's death certificate his parents are listed as William Schaufus and Caroline Frichie. Don't know if any of this helps you. I never give up plugging away, and if I can find the Schaufus connection, will post a message to you. Lynne

HERZBERG NY & IA

Carroll HERZBERG, delayed birth cert from 1940 says he was born in 1918 in Prarie, M(undecipherable) County, Iowa to Alexander Herzberg (born in New York abt 1891) and Alma Berberick. The family moved to Chicago when Carroll was a very young boy. I know Prarie City is in Jasper county IA, but I have searched in Jasper without any results. Caroll probably did not know where he was born in Iowa and therefore he needed a delayed birth cert - because his original one wasn't found in Jasper. Anyhow the 1930 Chicago census has 2 other brothers Lawrence and Irving, both born in Iowa between 1917 and about 1923. I am posting this message wherever I see a number of 1920 Census HERZBERGS. Anyone working on HERZBERG in IOWA - I'd love to hear from you.
Ross

I don't know if this will help you or not- i am researching my family past and my great grand father was John D. Herzberg and his mother's name was Sophia. In the 1900 census Sophia is listed as head of household and having 8 kids. Only 3 were living with her at that time in Nodaway,Page, Iowa. I believe Sophia was married to Dietrich from what my grandfather told me about his father but I haven't been able to confirm that.
Hello, Lynne

A co-worker of mine who does research on his family told me that he happened to see the name Richard Herzberg on this message board, which he remembered being my grandfather's name. I do have some limited information about the family, but am stymied because I will need some help from researchers in Germany to go any farther.

What is the purpose of your research into this family line?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Randy

Hi, Lynne

Thanks for answering so soon. I have been doing research on my family for about 2 years. In regards to the name Schaufus, the only thing I have is my grandfather's death certificate which lists his parents as "Franz Ludwig Herzberg" and "Pauline Schaufuss", both born in Germany. My grandfather was born in Leipzig (or Leipsic), Germany March 11, 1880 and died August 19, 1963 at the San Leandro Convalescent Hospital in San Leandro, California, where I live. So the dates you have on my grandfather are right, but how did you connect MY grandfather's b and d dates to the Richard Herzberg you seem to be looking for? By the names you listed as children, Pauline doesn't seem to fit in, unless something happened that we don't know about. I wish I could be of more help.

Randy

Hi. In my research for my Wenzel relatives about five years back, I came across Germany letters that someone posted on the internet. I printed them off, since many of the names were similar to my family. Unfortunately, I was never again able to find them, or the person who posted them. In these letters are the following Surnames. I am hoping anyone who finds these familiar will contact me. They are:
Wenzel
Herzberg
Thiede
Thiede Herzberg
Thiede Schafer(umlets over the a)

The towns mentioned are:
Niederkaufungen, Gau Kassel, Unterebahnhofstrasse
Wehnershof, Kreis Schlochau, Germany
Berlin
Saxony

These letters range in years from 1903 to 1947.

Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kathy
chadandkathy@hotmail.com
Hi. I know this is a long shot. In my research for my Wenzel relatives years ago, I came across these letters on the internet. I have not been able to get ahold of the person who posted them, but they do contain the name Herzberg. In the letter, there is mention of Hermann going abroad again. This letter was supposed to have been written after 1903. They were from Germany, as there are many German towns mentioned. The other names in connection with these letters are: Bertha Thiede Herzberg, Lina Wenzel, Old AUnt Utt, Martha, little Erna???, Berta, Karl, Albert L?, Emilie, Emma Thiede, Frieda Herzberg, and many with the last name of Schafer. If you feel there is any connection, please contact me. I am willing to share all information I have that may be of use to you. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Kathy

p.s. My Wenzel and Muller(Miller) realatives were from Purssia.

Hi, Lynn

Since I haven't seen a reply from you, I wanted to see if you knew whether or not my great-great-grandmother, Pauline Schaufus(s), is one of your relatives. If you have found her name in your line, would you share the information with me? It would be to continue to fill the names on my "Family Tree Maker" program so I can fill in the gaps. I wish I had some dates to go with her name, and I don't even know how many children they had. My uncle remembers his father (Richard W. Herzberg) telling him that he was raised by a "mean aunt". I don't know why his parents didn't raise him. His father never spoke about the family, except to his daughters, my uncle's sisters. My uncle vaguely remembers his father telling him about a brother who owned a clothing store, possibly in Nebraska or somewhere in the Midwest.

Anyway, if you could respond to let me know one way or the other about the family, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Randy
