Little Rose was a bright child and in their bereavement the sorrowing ones have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from St. Patrick's church tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. The interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery.
Janesville Recorder and Times--Janesville WI, Rock Co. dated 11-29-1894 page 5:3.

I am looking for information on he Hession families of Amesbury, Mass. I am descended from Patrick HESSIAN and his wife Julia. Who was his father? One source I have says Michael and Mary HESSION were his parents, but there were several Michael HESSIONs and a few Patrick HESSIONs in Amesbury and I'm having trouble sorting them out.

Patrick and Julia both died before 1880, and their children were living with their uncle Michael HESSION and his family. The household had two ANNIE Hessions -- one the daughter of Patrick and Julia, and the other the daughter of Michael and Hannah. And both Annie's were the same age.

Any and all info on any of the Hessions / Hessians of Amesbury would be greatly appreciated.

Hessian Surname

Kathleen, sorry for not getting to this sooner! Thank you for your response in December --- wow, time flies! My ggrandmother, (Margaret Hessian)'s son, Thomas Coyne (which was also her second husband's name) was born in 1874 . . . her husband Thomas Coyne was born in Ireland in 1836. She was born in Tuam,Ireland (haven't been able to ever find a birth date or age for her -- although we do believe from pictures that she was older than her second husband -- so it wouldn't surprise me if she was born around 1828 to 1830ish) and came to the states with her mother and we think a sister. She married a Mr. Larkin and had a daughter (Julia) with her first husband. She was 16 when she married him. They lived in Cinncinati, Ohio. (He later died). I believe Thomas, her son, was the youngest of her second family - Edward, James, Margaret (Aunt Maggie), and Thomas... so she was older when she had them. Have you found anymore information about your Hessians? I hope she was related in some way . . . I am finding NO information about any Hessians in the States (or Ireland for that matter). Sure hope I can link something up in Ireland. Please stay in touch. Thanks!
Darcy

My ggrandmother, Margaret Hessian came to the states from Galway, Ireland in, approx. 1850. She was born in Tuam. It is believed that she came with her mother and a sister (possibly others, but can't confirm that so far). They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. So there were definitely Hessian's in the states before 1900, as you stated. I am in touch with a Hessian relative down in Australia . . . and it appears that her greatuncle, Thomas and (not sure yet) Michael (who MIGHT be Margaret's father) were brothers. They ended up in Minnesota. Darcy :)

Hello Stacy,

I also have the Hessian name in my genealogy. My Great Great Grandmother was named Eliza Hessian. She married Martin Murphy in Ireland. We are currently trying to determine where. We believe it is court, but when I look at Griffiths Valuation of Ireland from 1848-1864, I discovered that out of 97 Hessian households listed on the survey, 93 of them were in County Galway or County Mayo which is rather far from County Cork in 18/19 century travel circumstances.

Hessian is a rare surname, so I am always interested in anyone that has the surname in their background. I do not know the name of Eliza Hessian's father, but her Mother was named Mary Connell. They came to the USA in 1864. Someone said there were no Hessians in the USA before the 1900, but my ancestors disprove that.

Not sure if you know any Hessian's from County Cork, but I would be very interested if you do. It may be though that Martin Murphy and Eliza Hessian came from Galway and the reference to County Cork refers to the Hayes/Costello side of my family. Not sure, still trying to figure all this out.

Darcy,
My grandfather, Michael Joseph Hession, b abt 1886, came from the parish of Kilkerrin, outside Tuam. His sister, Margaret Hession, was born abt 1880 and settled in the US abt 1900. This is later than your Margaret, but perhaps this family is related. The earliest Hession ancestor I have is Nicholas Hession, born abt 1800. He had a son, Thomas (b abt 1835) and very likely a son named Patrick. They came from the townland of Cloonconore.
Kathleen

Darcy,
I think that I failed to respond to your message. If so, I apologize. I don't know of any Hessions/Hessians who came to the US before 1900. However, it is possible that your Margaret was the sister of my ggrandfather, Thomas. Often names were repeated over and over in Irish families. I don't know how we could confirm this, since civil registration for births did not start until 1864. I found Thomas in the 1901 Irish Census and his father, Nicholas, in Griffith's valuation. I also found Thomas' marriage entry (civil registration)in 1869. In that record there is a Patrick Hession listed as a witness. I am assuming that he was Thomas' brother. Unfortunately, there are no other records. It appears that the parish records for Kilkerrin were burned in a church fire. Have you visited the Hession site yet? You may find it helpful in your search.
Kathleen

Hi, I read your message and was interested because I have a Thomas Hessian (my GGGrandfather) who lived in County Galway, Ireland. He had a son also named Thomas who eventually moved to the United States. One of Thomas' son's names was Robert- my Grandfater. I don't know if there were any other siblings or not. Any information would be great. Thanks.
