Re: Need Help on Mixed Hesters

I'm having a similar problem with Abraham Hesters in Mecklenburg and Pickens counties... There are two Abraham Hesters. One born in 1736 who I believed to be Robert Hester Jr's brother (m. Ann Ragland) and one born in 1850 who I believed to be Robert Jr's son (m. Sarah Carwell). The problem is with the Robert Hester will. Abraham should be the oldest son, but the 1850 birth date doesn't allow him to be. If this is Robert Hester Jr's will and Barbara is his wife (as she is listed in the will to be) then Abraham Hester would have to have been born before 1850 to be listed as the substitute executor of his fathers will. He should be the oldest child. I'm confused!!!

Hesters of GA

There is a lot of differences in some of the Hester lines coming from the Appling GA area.
The William and David Hesters that came from NC, some has speculated that they came from Granville. I have found no documents that prove that only that census records show that they were born in NC. David and William (some use Columbus as Williams middle name, again still no records that I have seen) were the sons of David Sr.
They are in Burke Co, GA by 1820. and then in Appling by 1840. on the census in 1840, David Sr. is listed as 90-100, David Jr. 30-40 and William next door. They are listed as having the last name of Easters. David also drew in the 1827 GA Land Lottery in Burke Co. and is listed as a Rev. Soldier. There is also a David Hester listed with the NC DAR. So David Sr.born NC between 1740-1750 died after 1840 in Appling Co., GA. There was also a sister to David and William but I have never found out who she was.
Family lore has stated that the two brothers came to GA, but it is proven that they did come with thier parents. Their mother is not listed on the 1840 census so she has probably passed. that would have made her born between 1775-1794 and died between 1820-1840, either Burke or Appling Co., GA.
There is a David listed in Granville NC in 1769 and so it is possible that they were from there.
If anyone would like to know more info about this family my email address is thebeeheaven@hotmail.com

My Edmund was born about 1838 in Georgia, probably Bartow or Gordon County GA. His father was a Stephen Hester who appears in the 1850 Census in Gordon County. Edmund also appears on the 1856 Bartow County Poor School list. Stephen is believed to have been born in SC or VA although at least one source has him born in NC. Stephen would have been born around 1790-1800. I believe closer to 1790.

Re: Elisha Vance McClelland, Scioto Co Oh

yes, the McClellands were considered poor by most standards. however, David & Mary McClelland have a granite headstone in Ashland Cemetery in Boyd County, and the McClelland Family Plot, just across the road from them, has a large stone with McClelland on it. In these graves lie Elmira McClelland 1 with her daughter Ida belle, Sarah McClelland and her sister. Another grave was given or sold to, my other great grandmother Amanda Baldwin Campbell Kopp, who died in 1911. She is in an unmarked grave next to Elmira, I believe.
The McClellands came down from PA to KY via OH in the 1860s. They were in Scioto County in 1860, then sometime between then and 1880 moved into what became Boyd County.
One problem with this family is that they named their children after their brothers & sisters, so it gets confusing at times tracking them.
David & Mary McClelland had 7 kids and his parents also had 7 kids. Most of the children had a slew of descendants too, with rare exceptions, such as Elmira 2 and Sarah, who never married.
Seems like a good bet.

According to the Hester Newsletter, a Jacob Hester, aged 85, applied for a War of !812 Pension from Perry County IL. They often mention children's names, but nothing in the abstract. If you want a copy of the HNL send me your name and address at rbsgenealogy@ameritech.net and I will send you information. This is the abstract she has, but you may want to order a copy at www.archives.gov. This is the astract:

"5. JACOB HESTER, Pvt., Capt. JOSEPH CURTICE's Co. Drafted Ohio Militia (see page 239 in The Hester Newsletter for his service record). Pension Nos: SO 11967, SC 7767. Notes from this file: Jacob enlisted 23 Feb 1814 at Lebanon, Ohio; discharged 23 Aug 1814 at Lebanon, Ohio; resided in Perry Co IL; address was P.O. Tamaroa, Perry Co IL. The following handwritten document was in Jacob's file:

"State of Illinois) On this 15th day of April A.D. 1871 personally appeared before (County of Perry) me C. E. R. Winthrop Judge of the County Court of Perry County State of Illinois the same being a Court of record for said county and State: Jacob Hester aged 84 years, a resident of Perry County State of Illinois, who, being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Jacob Hester who was drafted into the service of the United States in Warren County Ohio, on or about the 18th day of August A.D. 1814, under Captain Joseph Curtice in Major Potters command, and remained in the service in said war for a term of six months. Affiant further states that he drew a land warrant for said service and laid the same on the Homestead he now resides on. He further states that he did not aid or abet the late rebellion of A.D. 1861 against the government of the United States. Affiant further states that this declaration is made to procure a pension under the act of Congress approved February 14th A.D. 1871.
his
Jacob X Hester
mark
Also personally appeared Samuel H. Eaton and Jonas Eaton residents of Perry County State of Illinois persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and, who being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Jacob Hester make his mark to the foregoing declaration, nd they further swear that they have known the applicant for 28 years and that they have every reason to believe from
his appearance that he is the identical person he represents himself to be and that they knew him when he drew and laid his land warrant on the homestead he now lives on. And they further state that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. /s/ Charles E. R. Winthrop
Co Judge"

Since Uriah was an uncommon name among Hesters, he might be his grandfather.

Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Huron and Lorain, Ohio, J.H. Beers & Co, Chicago, 1894.

pp. 335-7. "JOHN S. HESTER, of Norwich township, for many years a well-known prosperous citizen of the county, is a native of Ohio, born in Columbiana county November 8, 1810.

His father, MARTIN HESTER, was born in Greene County, Penn., a son of JOHN HESTER, of German birth, who came to America when a young man, settling in Greene Co Penn., where he carried on a farm of his own, and followed the trade of weaver. He married MISS ELIZABETH MASON, by whom there were three sons—MARTIN, JOHN and MATTHIAS--and five Daughters-ELIZABETH, SARAH, MARY, MARGARET and EMILY. From Pennsylvania he moved with his family to Columbiana County, Ohio, settling on a farm of 160 acres, where he continued agricultural pursuits and weaving. He passed from earth about the year 1825, at the age of sixty-two years. Politically he was a strong Whig, and he was a member of the German Lutheran Church.

MARTIN HESTER, eldest son of this pioneer, was born in 1787 in Greene County, Penn. and was reared on his father's farm, attending during a few winter months the subscription schools of the locality. He became a great reader, and what he lacked in education he made up amply by home study. When his parents moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, he accompanied them, and farmed there some four or five years after marriage, removing then to Orange Township, Richland (now Ashland) Co., Ohio. At that time this was the extreme frontier of civilization, and if there were any neighbors north of them, save 'Redskins,' they never heard of them. The Indians were numerous, and wild animals, such as bears, wolves and deer, roamed the dense forest at will. One day MRS. HESTER, being out after the cows, found a very young deer, so small that she carried it home in her apron, and kept it as a pet for a year or two. In Orange Township, MR. HESTER owned about 160 acres of land, and there lived till 1824, when he came to Bronson township, Huron county, settling on land bought of JUDGE SOUTHGATE, and here he spent the rest of his busy life, dying in 1870; his wife passed away in 1865. In 1809 he had married MISS MARY STOUGH, a daughter of REV. JOHN STOUGH, of Fayette county, Penna, and to this union were born five children, all of wham are living today at advanced ages, none being under seventy years old. Their names are JOHN S., ELIZA, SA11UEL, MATTHIAS and MARTIN M., of whom JOHN S. is the subject of this sketch; ELIZA married ELISHA SAVAGE, of Berea, Ohio; SAMUEL lives in Paxton, Ill.; MATTHIAS is in Norwalk, Ohio; MARTIN M. is in Bronson township, on the old homestead. The father was a staunch Whig and Republican, and a member of the M. E. Church, in which he served as steward.

JOHN S. HESTER, whose name introduces this sketch, received but a limited education, as his boyhood was much taken up in assisting his father on the farm. Being fond of books, however, and gifted with a retentive memory, he was not long in making up for deficiency in that respect. At the age of nineteen he commenced to learn carpentry, at which he worked three years, receiving one hundred and fifty dollars for his• time. He then went to Milan, Erie Co., Ohio, and continued his trade for one year, his wages being one dollar per day. After this he moved to Huron, same county, and worked on steamboats, assisting among other things in building several boats, among which may be mentioned the 'United States' and the 'George Washington.' Coming to Norwalk in 1834, he here worked at his trade one year, at the end of which time, his health failing and his eyesight becoming impaired, he gave up work and returned to his father's house, where he recuperated. Soon thereafter, in 1835, he married MISS JANE PANCOST of Bronson Township, Huron County, but she died the following year. He then bought land in Norwich Township, paying therefor four dollars and fifty cents per acre, which property he subsequently traded for the farm in Norwich Township, where he now lives. He received from his father's estate four hundred dollars, which alone gave him a start in the world, and he has now 200 acres of land, although he at one time owned 400 acres, having sold 200 acres of valuable timber land, the proceeds of which he invested in five-twenty Government bonds at par, to aid the Government in carrying on the Civil War, which investment proved remunerative.

For his second wife MR. HESTER married, in 1841, MISS LUCINDA M. HILDREDTH, born in Tompkins County, New York, a daughter of BENJAMIN HILDREDTH, and five children were born to this union, of wham the following is a brief record: CHARLES T. died in the Civil war; ELIZA is the wife of S. R. MCCONNELL, of Burlington, Iowa; SUSAN died in infancy; JULIA is the widow of WILLIAM DOUGHERTY, late of Mansfield, Ohio, and has one child, BESSIE (they reside with our subject); HATTIE H. is married to REV. H. P. RICHARDS, of North Fairfield. Politically our subject has been respectively a Free-soiler, Abolitionist and a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Church, in which he has held the offices of class-leader, steward, etc., and in 1879 was elected a lay delegate to the annual Conference of northern Ohio, and successively every four years up to 1891.

MR. HESTER related many interesting anecdotes of the early days in the settlements. His great uncle, URIAH HESTER, was once attacked by Indians, who scalped him and left him for dead; but he recovered, and afterward moved to Indiana, becoming the progenitor of the family of the name in that State. MARTIN MASON, great-grandfather of subject, when a boy was captured by Indians, and taken to Canada, where he was sold to some man of prominence. When he was twenty-one years old he was allowed to return to Pennsylvania to visit relatives, with whom he remained. JACOB FAST, great-uncle of JOHN S. HESTER, was also captured by Indians, who told him that he would have to 'run the gauntlet,' and his life would be spared. Instead of running the customary way, however, he treated the Redskins to an exhibition of side hand-springs, known among boys as 'making a wheel of himself,' which must have considerably astonished his audience, who not only spared his life but made him a chief."

Hi Tammy, I am trying to make a connection of a Thomas R. Hester of Brooks Co., Ga.,to a Henry W. Hester of Laurens
Co. If it is the same Thomas. 1850 census shows a Thomas in
the household of Henry W. Hester and Mary Ann Smith. Born
1832/33 age 17. 1860 census shows a Thomas 28 born 1832 in
Brooks Co., Ga. I need prove that these Thomas's infact are
the same person. Henry may be the son of Stephen B. Hester,
but can not find a positive connection there either, only
speculation from other researchers. Can you help.
Thanks Sharon Hester Ehrisman

Only death records,,next to Gurtrude there are two rocks to establish someone is buried there,,I would bet it is Ansie and Vance. I often wondered who it might have been..
In a very old book ( LEADERS AND LEADING MEN OF THE INDIAN TERRITORY, by O'Bierne, published 1891), there is an entry for a HESTER. I can not tell if this man ties in with your family or not, however, it may be a lead for you to work on:

Page27:
CAPTAIN G. B. HESTER ( a white)
No merchant in the Indian Territory is more highly respected, nor has a better business record than CAPT. G. B. HESTER, who was known as a trader in the old quarters at Boggy Depot as far back as 1858.
He was born in 1831, in Granville, N. C., and he came to Tishomingo in 1855. From thence he moved to Caddo where he clerked a few years for Major Harlan, after which he settled down in Boggy. At the commencement of the war, he was appointed quartermaster and commisary in the 1st Choctaw Regiment, and served in most of the principal engagements, in 1865 he was chosen cotton agent for the Creek Indians, who were at that time squatting in the Chickasaw Nation, and in a state of almost utter destitution, having but little to eat and nothing to wear. In this capacity Capt. Hester acquitted himself honorably, displaying the tact and rare business qualifications for which he has since become remarkable.
He married a MISS LIZZIE FULTON, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia. His eldest daughter, FANNIE, was the wife of EDWARD PERRY ESQ. of Denison, Texas, she died in November of 1885. The second daughter, DAISEY married ROBERT L. Owen, ex-Indian agent in Dec. 1889.
Mr. Hester, for his long association among the Choctaw is listed as a member of that nation.

I am descended from Stephen Michael Hester (b 1815 in GA) who married Mary Delphine Fayard (b. 1820 in MS). They moved to Texas after 1865 having lived in Mississippi from at least 1838. I don't imagine this is a direct line to your family, but would be happy to do some comparison checking.

Email me at lake_gen@sbcglobal.net
Looking for any info on Hesters that were in Marion County TN in the 1860-1870's I found them in the Census, but several died and were buried there. They were in the 1860 Census in Running Water. James W.Hester worked for the railroad as a laborer. William Milton Hester, and Francis Marion, both married Winnett girls there. McCaga or Micejoh Hester (he is listed both ways), Martha Hester and Andrew Jacskon Hester were all in Marion Co. in 1860. Does anyone have any info or connect with these in any way?

Re: Uriah Hester, Ohio

I am trying to figure out the Hesters in the 1850 US Census, District 7, Perry County, Illinois. Three Hester households are listed. The first includes Uriah Hester (age 40, farmer), Mary Hester (age 41), William H. Hester (age 14), John Hester (age 11), Reuben (age 8), Nancy Hester (age 3), Olive Hester (age 2), Peter Hester (age 18, farmer) and Silas Hester (age 23). The next househould is Jacob Hester (age 64), Catherine Hester (age 60) and Polly Hester (age 30). The third household is Henry Hester (age 28, farmer), Elizabeth Hester (age 23), Simtitha Hester (age 21), George Hester (age 14), Thomas Hester (age 12), Maleja Hester (age 10), Arvilla Hester (age 8), Montreville Hester (age 5), Sarah Hester (age 2) and Elihu Hester (age 23). I know who most of these Hesters are – Jacob is my fourth-great-grandfather, Uriah is his son and Uriah is his grandson, my second-great-grandfather. However, some of the other Hesters, especially those in the third household, I cannot connect. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Uriah Hester, Ohio & Jacob Heser, Pennsylvania

I just discovered that the internet site for the Church of Latter Day Saints (http://www.familysearch.org) lists the parents of Uriah Hester as Jacob Hester, born 1786, Pennsylvania, and Catherine, born 1790, Maryland. Does anyone have any collaboration or related information? Thanks. Stephen McMahon

Uriah Hester, Ohio

Looking for information on Uriah Hester (born 1810, Ohio), his son Reuben Hester (born 1841, Illinois), his grandson John Henry Hester (born 1872, Illinois). John Henry Hester's wife was Fannie Belle Wicker (born 1881, Missouri). I am especially interested learning more about Fannie Belle Wicker, my great-granfmother, as I understand she was quite a character. Any information is appreciated. Stephen McMahon

Re: Elisha Vance McClelland, Scioto Co Oh

Hi Ed
this is certainly very suggestive, as we know Rachel Myers continued to live with Elisha Vance & her sister. yes, it sounds as if they were brought back to Ohio, possibly by his brother John McClelland.
Vance's 2 sisters are buried in Ashland, Boyd County cemetery, Sarah & Elmira McClelland the first. (my great aunt was also named Elmira).
And his brother David Scott McClelland born April 1859 (my great grandfather)& his wife Mary are also in BOyd County Cemetery, just across a narrow road. A slew of Mac kin is in the Ashland cemetery.
