I noticed your post and that John S. is your gggrandfather.
I believe that he may be a brother to my gggrandfather,
David T. Hatfield (Hetfield). Do you have any information
in old family records mentioning John's brothers or other
siblings? I am thinking maybe old letters-- prob. would be
from PA, IL, NY or maybe NE.
I have copies of John's Civil War pension file if you are
interested in my sending you copies. Unfortunately there
is no mention of his parents.
I have copies of some research done by a DAR member who is
now deceased. She typed up a list of the siblings (and their residences) of Thomas Thorne Hetfield of Orange Co., NY. She states that these were listed in the original will of Thomas Thorne HETFIELD. Unfortunately she does not list the source for the information. Important to you though would be the listing of John HETFIELD of Warsaw, IN. I am in the process of trying to track down where that researcher found the old will information. It is not in the Courthouse of Orange County, NY nor at their Historical Soc. I'm hoping that the DAR has it in their records. If so I will be able to connect (and so will you) to Moses HETFIELD, Rev. War soldier, Orange Co. NY.
There is a newer will for Thomas Thorne HETFIELD at the Courthouse in Orange County probably written when his first wife died and he remarried.
I find that a very good source for this line of HETFIELD/HATFIELD is The Descendents of Matthias Hatfield
compiled by Abraham Hatfield. You will find John S. listed as a child of Adonijah Hetfield, but unfortunately it also states nothing more known about John.
I have done a lot of research on this HETFIELD line.

John S. Hetfield (Hatfield) is my GGGGG Grandfather. I have only recently started dabling in genealogy again. I have also been corresponding with Pat Milligan Cootey, who has a post here. She is related to Sarah Milligan, but not John.

My line is: tracie English Webb>Miner NMN English>Juanita Ruth Miner>John Everett Miner>Emeretta Hetfield>John S.Hetfield/Hatfield. I do not yet know who John's parents are. I am not related to Sarah (2nd wife), but his first wife, who I speculate was Mary (Polly) Fenton, who he had two children with.

John is my relative, but Sarah was his second wife, who is not my relative. They were married in 1846, which is after his first two daughters were born in 1843 (Emeretta) and 1845 (Mary). So there must have been a wife before Sarah. I am descended from Emeretta. My grandmother also told me that Sarah was his second wife. I don't know who the first wife was or if she died. I am finally going to request John's military records, which should have great info for two different wars. I look forward to hearing from you.

My ggg-aunt was Sarah Milligan. She married a John S. Hatfield(spelling on marriage record)in 1846 in Randolph county, Indiana. I believe they are the Hetfields that lived and died in Warsaw, Kosciusko, Indiana. John S. Hatfield died 26 Mar 1905. Is he your John S.
You mention a first wife, Caroline McMellen - were there any children from that marriage? Emeneta Hetfield was born around 1842, four years before Sarah and John S. marry in 1846.

My grandfather and James' Grandfather were brothers. My brothr looks exactly like James Hetfield...so bizzare. We have never contacted him though.

I have information on John S HETFIELD. I believe that he is a brother to my David T. Hatfield. The family goes back to Orange County, NY. As this family traveled west, the spelling changed from HETFIELD to HATFIELD. Records show that some retained the original spelling and others changed it. I know he served in the Civil War. Have you found evidence of his service in other wars? Perhaps, Indian Wars?

In my research for Hatfield I have discovered that my line goes back to the spelling of Hetfield. Moses Hetfield of Orange County, NY, (served in the Revolutionary War) had sons, one named Adonijah. Thus far I believe that Adonijah was my ggg grandfather. Adonijah and some of his sons migrated to Ogle County, Illinois, but his son David (my gg grandfather) and another son migrated to Northmoreland,PA about the same time. Those who moved to PA exhibit a name change to Hatfield in the records, but Adonijah and sons in Illinois kept the spelling Hetfield. I still have a lot of proofs to do, but from records I have thus far gathered, I am pretty sure I am on the right track. Will be happy to share any info I have.

Cinda, you & my wife Mary Ann [Hewitt] Grafton are cousins! {How 'bout e-mailing us?} Bette Hewitt is still with us, although she is currently [7-25-06] in the hospital in Lynchburg, VA, after suffering a mild stroke. -- Aunt Margie died of lung cancer 16 Apr 1997. {Bette Hewitt is still in touch with the Collier girls, by the way.}

Has anyone run across a John Hetfield born in NY in about 1816? He didn't sit still much after birth. He went to Chicago for awhile and later ended up in Indiana. I think that his first wife was Caroline McMellen, then Sara Milligan was the second. I am just a dabbler, but I thought this might turn up something. Thanks.

Sorry, I have not run across Elmira Hetfield within my searches, but I will keep my eyes open for her now. My John died in Warsaw, Indiana at a very old age. His daughter, Emeretta, was the end of our Hetfield line in Kansas.....Tracie.

Thank you for responding and keeping me in mind. No, I haven't found out anything much about John yet. However, John was very active in a couple different wars, so I plan on requesting his military records. From that, I may find info that leads me to his parents and siblings. I'll keep John in mind as I look for Ferdinand Oscar Hetfield in New York. FO was born in 1816 so they could be sibs or cousins. Have you heard of any Hetfield contempories for John?

I did contact the TFA Genelogist,but they probably were having the same problem you were with my e-mail. I sent a letter out today to Patricia Thayer Muno,(Thayer Family Historian), and gave her what history I have so far on my Thayer ancestors. I do believe I might have some of the info you want.
My gr-grandfather is Ferdinand O. Hetfield.
His sister was Ellen Elvina Hetfield b. 1852 and married George Washington Thayer April 8,1871 in Detroit, MI. (also married G. Riggs, 1st marriage).

I have info on the Hetfield line. Part of it I have traced back to the Raymonds ie.. Elvina's grandmother's line.

Hey, I'm one. My father was Charles Lawrence Hetfield Jr.(gramps of course was Charles Lawrence Sr.). Believe the family originated in Britain somewhere. We lived in St. Paul MN but my father was originally born in Montana. I believe James Hetfield from Metallica is also related to us somehow, probably through Marjorie Hetfield (nee), now Mrs. Louis Collier, if she's not already dead. There is also a Bette Hewitt in Virginia (Newport, I believe) that is a Hetfield, Chuck, Margie and Bette were the only three in my father's family. Charles (my dad) has been dead since 1951 but I believe the sisters are still alive. Let me know if you think we are related!!! I have a sister Paula who is still a Hetfield, she lives in St. Paul.
