Capt. Henry Heth

I am in possession of the will of Captain Henry Heth who died in Pennsylvania. Is he the father of Capt. Henry Heth of Va. The brother's names all match the info on my Society of the Cincinnati document which has been handed down through my family through Rebekah K. Heth. There seem to be 2 of these documents. A Mr. Joseph Rubinfine has one for sale which he says is authentic. He is selling it because of the signature of George Washington which appears on the document. My family lineage is written on the back this document comes down through the Haynes/Heth side of the family. Captain Henry Heth from Va. would only have been 16 at the beginning of the Revolution. The names that appear on the back of my document are Captain Henry Heth, Colonel William Heth Lieutenant John Heth. Is this Captain the father or one of the brothers?

Thanks for your help.

Henry David Laughlin III

Thanks for the info. I can't get into one of these addresses, but the other one came up regarding the Battle of Chancellorsville. Maj. General Heth is my 1st cousin 5 times removed. His father and my 4x great grandfather were brothers. Stockton Heth, whom he mentions in his report, was his first coursin and the son of Lt. John Heth(Rev. War), his uncle. I have added this to my family records.

Thanks again,

Hank Laughlin

Harvey Heth is the brother of Andrew Heth and my husband's 3x great grandfather. The date I have for Andrew's death was written down in the family Bible by his sister-in-law, Rebekah Kuydendall Heth, widow of Harvey Heth. Andrew is supposed to have died during the time that he was in Pittsburgh attending to his father's business. His father, Henry Heth, was ill and died a year later, in 1793. He is mentioned in his father's will, as are William, John, Henry, Harvey, and Richard.

Mariann Laughlin

There is no mention of Andrew's wife's name in this record.
Thank you very much for your information on Andrew Heth. I am the historian for Clarksville INDIANA (not Kentucky), where Andrew lived and served as town trustee, along with General George Rogers Clark. He was replaced on the board of trustees in 1793, when he died.

Do you know if Harvey Heth was also a brother? Harvey owned a lot of land in early Clarksville and was a delegate to the Indiana Territorial Legislature. Harvey lived in Harrison County Indiana and there is a township named after him.

I have a Mrs. Heth in the town minutes who boarded "spies" or watchmen and another Andrew who was licensed to operate a ferry across the Ohio River between Clarksville and Kentucky. Might you know who they were? I assume Mrs. Heth was Andrew's wife. Do you know her name or when/where they married?

One question about the information you sent. In paragraph 2 the death date you show for Andrew is obviously incorrect. Do you have the correct date? I would be surprised if he died in Pittsburgh, as he lived in Clarksville.

I very much appreciate you help in this and would like any information you have on Andrew's siblings and their children.

Jane Sarles

Here is what I have in a nutshell. Andrew was my husband's 3x great uncle.

Andrew Heth was the second of 12 children born to Henry Heth (American Revolution) and Agnes McMahon Heth. He was the brother of my 3x great grandfather, Harvey Heth, who settled on his bounty lands in Indiana and developed them with William Henry Harrison. There is a Heth township around Corybdon, Indiana which was a part of these lands. Harvey also gave the land that the courthouse is on today. Harvey married Rebekah Kuykendall, daughter of Benjamin Kuykendall of PA.

Andrew was born in Virginia on August 11, 1752 & died in Pittsburgh, PA on July 11, 1752. He married. He and his wife had no children. But his nieces and nephews often seem to have stayed with him.

Andrew Heth served as a Lieutenant in his father's Virginia Company at Ft. Pitt on the Western frontier, October 1777 to January 1782. He went with George Rogers Clark to the Northwest Territory, and served as Quartermaster for Clark's Illinois Regiment. He recieved a Lieutenant's bounty for his service. He later married & moved to Clarksville, KY, where he developed and sold his bounty lands.

Henry "Harry" Heth was also a brother. He was born June 12, 1765 and died in Savannah, GA in June of 1865.

Hope this helps. I have Hank's great grandmother's handwritten info on the births, deaths and marriages of the other brothers and sisters if you would like them.

Mariann Laughlin/wife of Henry David Laughlin, jr.

I am looking for anyone who may have information about John Heth, born about 1882, died 1941. He was the son of Nathan Byron Heth and Mary Davy Heth. He was the brother of my grandmother Irmgard Irene Heth.
One of his sons was William Lamm Heth, born 1914, died 1953. William was a pro golfer and tennis player, also taught gliding and aircraft flying during and before WWI. Specifically, we are looking for any other descendants William might have had besides Sandra Heth Everage, a cousin of mine. We believe William was married perhaps two other times and may have had other children.
No, it is the same line. Major General Harry Heth, CSA was my great grandmother, Ella Heth Haynes' 3rd cousin. Their branch of the family stayed in Virginia. Ours moved on to Indiana and then Kentucky on Heth land patents granted to Major Henry Heth (American Revolution). I will have to get out her notes to get this straight in my mind. I will get back to you. Stockton was Major General Henry(Hank is what he liked to be called)Heth's,CSA, son and he mentions him in his battle reports. The Heth's had a regiment which fought first under Major Henry Heth (American Revolution). Major General Henry Heth CSA commanded the Heth regiment from Virginia during the Civil War. The regiment had been a family tradition since the days of the French & Indian War when Henry Heth I (American Revolution) had been a scout with the Indians under George Washington. He used to leave his mark a "double H" on the trees with his tomahawk so that the Indians would follow his trail while he was looking for the enemy.

Hank

Lt. John Heth and Lt. Col William Heth were brothers. They were both sons of Major Henry Heth who fought in the American Revolution. My 4x great grandfather, Harvey Heth, was their brother and Henry (of the American Revolution) was his father, too.

Henry David Laughlin III

Andrew was in what is today Pittsburgh. I do not know if he moved there after the Revolution or not. Henry Heth I(one of his sons was later named for him & they called him Harry) moved from Virginia to Pittsburgh and settled on some of the land granted to him. He called it "Heth's Delight." Andrew is mentioned in his will, which I am sending to you. It is a short, transcribed copy. Henry Heth I died in 1793 so the dates that you have would correspond with his death.

Did I miss something in your message?
Lt. John Heth, who married Margaret Pickett, was the son of Lt.Col. William Heth of the American Revolution, 3rd Virginia Regiment, d.15 April 1808 in Richmond, Virginia.
Was "Henry" in part of William Heth's name? Or is William the son of an older Henry Heth?
Just curious! Barbara

I am a little confused by your message in understanding the relationship of the people.
Maj.Gen. Henry "Harry" Heth CSA, 54th Va b.Dec 1825 in Chesterfield Co, Va., son of Lt. John Heth, War of 1812; and Henry's brother, Capt. Stockton Heth served on his staff during the Confederate War (Confederate Veteran). If I am clear on the lineage in the "Colonial Familes of the Southern States Of American": The Picketts of Fauquier: George Pickett had a daughter Margaret who married 13 March 1822 to Lt. John Heth. These were the parents of Maj. Gen Henry "Harry" Heth and Capt. Stockton Heth.
Am I just reading the posting wrong?
Just wondering! Barbara
