Re: Possible spelling change for American Hexamer/Heximer

As far as I can tell, Hexamer is the spelling in Germany. I have seen some really bad phonetic renderings in US records - Hicksheimer, Axamer, Hixmer, etc. - but my ancestors always used Hexamer here in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make the jump "across the pond" for this family, have not found their "hometown." Any thoughts?

Is anyone aware of any spelling changes to the Hexamer/Heximer name when immigrating to the Americas?

Also, I'm interested in religious histories of the name. Is there a religion that the family historically practiced?

I didn't realize I was on my mother's account (CTweed56) when I posted the query about Michael Hexamer but this is my usual account.

Michael is my g-g-g-grandfather through, his son, William James Hexamer (1864-1941); his son, Vearl Patrick Hexamer (1905-1959); his son, Vearl Patrick Hexamer Jr. (b. 1931); and then his daughter Cheryl Kim (Hexamer) Tweed(b. 1956).

I have been starting to look at immigration and ship records for Hexamer's trying to find Michael's father but without a first name or birthdate it is kind of pointless. Do you have any sources before the Civil War listings? Those are the earliest I can find.

As of right now, I am starting to wonder if he went by a different name (Michael is his middle name maybe?) or perhaps Hexamer has been grossly misspelled in earlier records. Just speculations on my part but who knows.

I live right outside of Anderson, where Michael is buried, and am planning on visiting the gravesite soon. Let me know if you are interested in pictures or anything.

--Kaleigh

Well, yes, Mary Romley was given as Michael's mother's name on his death certificate. However, there are several problems with that - we don't know for sure who provided the information; Romley is not a German name, and would have to be an anglicization of something else. And then we are back to the same old problem - in pension records, Michael declared that following the death of his wife in 1867, some of his younger children lived with his mother, here in Crawford Co. Well, there are no other Hexamers here, and no Romleys. I suspect perhaps a second marriage to an unknown man, but have nothing at all to go on in this regard. I keep hoping to find someone with that missing piece of information. I have scanned censuses for any women named Mary or Maria from Baden, or Germany in general. Came up with a few possibilities, but nothing definitive. How are you connected to Michael? He is my gr-gr-grandfather.

Hi everyone within the large family!

I'd like to post some general information which may be of interest. There are some things I found out:

1. The name: It should come from "Hexheimer", that is "one coming from Hexheim", a little town nowadays "Hechtsheim" (not Herxheim) and a part of the city Mainz in Germany (you will find it easily on the map). This place was formerly called "Hehhidesheim / Hehedesheim / Hechesheim / Hexheim / Hechdensheim / Hechisheim / Heckesheim / Hegsheim", it goes back to a personal name Hehith and means "Home (-heim) of Hehith". The original form may have been Hexemer, later becoming Hexamer, when the family settled in the region around the Nahe river. It is interesting, that the people of Mainz-Hechtsheim still call themselves "Hexemer" (= inhabitant of Hechtsheim") in their dialect.
2. For genealogical research there is a interesting small book (in German) "Familie Hexamer 1519-1900. Die Penningroth'schen Ahnentafeln Fam.Nr.69, Tafeln 1-10" by W.&H. Beltz and K.H.Küstner. You can order it at: Verbandsgemeinde Kirn-Land, Postfach 49, D-55601 Kirn (about 12 EUR plus porto). It considers especially those families living around Meddersheim, Sobernheim etc. For emmigration datas it is not very useful, you should know the exact dates of birth of the persons in question.

I hope that this may help you. Now I have a personal question. I could not find a connection of my Hexamer branch to the main part of the family. The earliest date is a Jakob Heinrich Albert Hexamer, born 1878 in St. Johann (today a part of Saarbrücken), his parents were Jakob Hexamer and Auguste Böttcher. He was married to Louise Wendling from Sulzbach/Saar (born 1881). Does anyone have any information?

Greetings to all
Iris
Mark,

The Hexemers came from Germany, in an area very close to Alsace-Lorraine, but not actually in that region. I have Jacob Johan and his family arriving in Boston, in 1830. They moved to Black Creek, Ontario, Canada and then to a little village called Snyder. We live in Niagara Falls. Our area if the former village of Chippawa and is not far from where the Hexemer homestead sat.

My wife is the one in the Hexemer line. Her mom was a Hexemer. There are still quite a few Hexemers (or Heximers) living in this general area (Willoughby Township, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, etc.). To date, I think I've 'found' well over 1,000 Hexemers.

So, please foward whatever information you have, and I will see what I can find for you.

Take care and have a great day!!

Rich and Marilyn Judge

Mark,

I've tried to find a link, with the Hexemer family that we have, but no luck, yet. No doubt, your father is part of the same family. The first Hexemer, in this area, Jacob Johann Hexemer, had 10 children. One of his sons had 17!! So, as you can see, it became a very large family.

Some of the Hexemers (Heximer, Hexamer) moved to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, NY and on to areas such as Texas. Do you have any other information, such as your grandfather's name, your mother's name, etc. The more information you provide, the better my odds of finding the link. Glad to help and share as much information as we have.

Rich Judge

My g-grandfather Friedrich Charles Hexamer was born 2 May 1822 in Meisenheim.
He emigrated to NY on the Gustav Edmond, arriving in August 1840, and settled in Newark, NJ.
The Hexamer name was (and still is)scattered around the area of Sobernheim, Meisenheim, and Meddersheim along the Nahe river. Not neccesarily all related to each other, but rather separate families.

Elky - if you have access to Meddersheim church records (perhaps a familienbucher), is there any indication of a Hexamer who migrated to Pennsylvania some time prior to 1823? He might have been married to a Maria Remmele or Rommele. I am a descendant of Michael Hexamer who was born in Philadelphia in 1823, of unknown parents. It's a bad "brick wall." Thanks!

My wife's family spelled their name Hexemer, although there were brothers and sisters, who spelled the name Heximer. We have not found any ancestors with the spelling Hexamer, although I believe all the spellings come from the same derivative.

Her first ancestors arrived at Boston, October 15, 1830, from Germany. There name was mispelled Heximan. You can see that the transcription was mistaken.

We know they arrived in the Niagara area of Ontario, Canada in the early 1830's and believed they spent some time in Pennsylvania. To date we have no documented support for that belief, but many of the German immigrants, in this area, came from Pennsylvania.

The first ancestor to Canada, Jacob Joahnn Hexemer, was born in Sprikelbach, Germany. His children's births are listed variously as Germany, or France. That reflects the changing control of their home area, between France and Germany.

We have not made any connection to other Hexemer, Heximer, or Hexamer families, from my wife's ancestors. Her Hexemer branch spread from here to other parts of Canada, New York State and Texas, to name a few.

Good luck with your search.

Rich and Marilyn Judge

Rich - for I long time I have been struggling with the antecedants of my gr-gr-grandfather, Michael Hexamer. Per self-report (military records), he was born 25 Aug. 1823, in Philadelphia Co., PA, of parents from Baden. I have never had even a hint of his father's name; his mother was listed, only once, as Mary Romley (Roemele?), but I can't vouch for the accuracy. I have not been able to find any Hexamer family (using any spelling)in PA or Ohio, 1800-1850. Michael showed up here in Crawford Co., northwest PA, on his wedding day in 1850, when he married a young French immigrant. Anyway, I am at the point of grasping at straws, but the name seems so distinctive, I can only hope there might be some connection. Many thanks for your time!

I grew up in Cooperstown PA which is about 5 miles from Deckards. I have been to the cemetary there numerous times to pay respects and get information (dates etc). I would be happy to share any information I have (dirk_beach@hotmail.com) and would love to know if anyone has ever been able to trace the lineage of Michael. He has proven to be a stumbing block for me.
Thank you,
Dirk

Hello, I found your posting here, although some time has gone since than. I am a born Hexamer from Germany. Most of the German Hexamers live around towns like Sobernheim, Meddersheim etc. But I found out that my familiy branch must originate from Alsace too. I am wondering how it is linked with the main branch. Maybe you can help me in this a little bit. My grandfather was Karl Albert Hexamer, born June 3th 1903 in Saarau (Saarland), a town which I cannot find nowadays, maybe because it has a French name now. Later he moved over to Saxonia and died there in 1976. I was told that his family originated from Alsace/Loraine.
So, if you have information on Hexamers in Alsace, please share this with me.
Lot of thanks!

Franz Josef;

My wife's family, Hexemer, originate from Wilgartswiesens. A book of devotions, which belonged to my wife's ancestor, states that he came from Spirkelbach. We have traced the family to Johann Jacob Hexemer (birth date unknown) and his wife, Anna Maria Scmidt. They had four children that we know of, with all born in Wiltgartswiesens, except the youngest. Johann Jacob born September 20, 1790 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); Maria Elizabetha born April 22, 1794 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); Anna Maria born August 2, 1796 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); and George Phillip born March 15, 1805(Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach).

My wife's family comes from the son, Johann Jacob. He married Anna Maria Fleck. They had five children, that we know of, before emigrating to North America (United States and then Canada). Margaretha born March 7, 1820 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); Elixabetha born July 25, 1822 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); Anna Maria born October 15, 1822 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); George Henry born November 27, 1826 (Wilgartswiesen, or Spirkelbach); and Jacob born 1829 in Wurtenburg. We believe that the youngest child, Jacob, was born as the family left
Germany.

They arrived in Boston, Massachusettes, on October 15, 1830. Unfortunately, we do not know which port they sailed from, nor the name of the ship.

If you could provide us with any additional information, it would be greatly appreciated.

The information you posted is very, very interesting.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Rich and Marilyn Judge

Mark,

I started to post a reply and then lost the message, so if you see an incomplete message, from me, please ignore it.

My wife's mother was a Hexemer (the spelling seems to varify from father to son and even with brothers) and we live in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We have done considerable research into the Hexemer family and have traced them back to Germany.

The first Hexemer to come to Canada, Johann Jacob, was born in Spirkelbach (near Landau) in 1790. He and his family arrived in Boston, Mass., on October 15, 1830. We believe, but have no evidence to date, that they lived in Pennsylvania, for some time. They moved to the Niagara area (Willoughby Township - now part of Niagara Falls) in the early 1830's.

We have compiled more than 600 descendants, of Johann Jacob's. Most spell the name Heximer, although we have a book of his, where the name is spelled Hexemer, in his own hand writing.

I've gone through our list and cannot find the Laurence Hexamer you referred to. Do you have any other names I can check and dates, or approximate dates of birth. We would gladly share any and all info that we have.

Good luck with your research.

Sincerely,

Rich Judge

My G-grandfather Friedrich C. Hexamer was born in 1822 in Meisenheim, Germany. He emigrated to Newark, New Jersey in 1840. Does anyone in this thread have any knowledge of him or his ancestry?

I am confused! Is this the whole Hexamer family line, or just yours? I haven't been able to trace further than Caterina Hexamer who died in 1912, in London. I wish I could trace my German ancestory however it proves difficult.

I only know that they lived in the Black Forest area, I know that this area is vast. But my Nana never spoke much about it, neither did her sister or brothers, they are all dead now.

Thank you for your information, I hope that you are able to answer my queries.

Chloe

I really envy your ability to to trace your tree back rather far! Thanks for the information, it is quite likely that they are have the same origin. Any information would be extremely helpful!

Chloe

Hello!

Sadly, we know very little about our German heritage. Caterina (or spelt in another way, we have three spellings for it Kahrena, Caterina and Katharina) Hexamer married Jacob Spengler in Germany around 1890. They had two sons before they moved to London, UK. They were called Jacob and Harry. We think they lived close to the Rhein (which is very long I know) and also on the outskirts of the Black Forest (also a large area). Are any of these places that you mentions in this albeit large locality?

Chloe

Chloe.Perren@btinternet.com

Fred Hexamer

The Hexamers are my mother-in-law's family. I have a Fred Hexamer in the tree, but no vital information about him (birth/death date). He is shown to be the son of Louis and Mary Hexamer and has the following siblings: Ella, Lillian, Grover, Elmer, Margaret, Richard and Charles. Let me know if this sounds familiar. Suanne.laqueur@wcom.com
