Classification: Query
Surnames: Heyes, Hindle, Cottam, Grimshaw, Rothwell, Lowther, Mills, Whitehead.
I have traced my Heyes ancestors back to the mid 1700s:
George and Ann (Hindle) of Gt. Harwood or Rishton and their
7 Heyes children:George (1744), Laurence (1747), Christopher (1749), Elizabeth (1752), Mary (1756), Richard (1759) and Ann (1762).
Then the next George (1744), his wife, Nanny (Cottam) in Gt. Harwood had
8 Heyes children: Mary (1764), John (1767), George (1770), Thomas (1772), James (1776), Richard (1778), Ann (1784) who married Abraham Rothwell at Church Kirk and James (1785).
Richard (1778) moved just down the road to Church Kirk - now know as just, Church - and with his second wife Johanna (Grimshaw) produced
6 Heyes children: yet another George (1806), John (1808), Peggy (1810), Grimshaw (1812), Windham (1814) and Mary Ann (1819).
In Blackburn George (1806) and his wife Sarah (Lowther). They married in 1832 and yet I have only traced
1 Heyes child: son Yates (1846).
Meanwhile - I have just discovered - Grimshaw Heyes (1812) had married Ann Parkinson and had 6 children two of whom, George (1832) and John (1836) sailed to Australia in 1857 in the "Tudor" to join the Gold Rush. Between them they had 15 children - so there are lots of antipodean Heyes! Many still to be discovered.
Yates (1846) married Mary (Mills) from Rochdale and had
7 Heyes children: Landor (1871), Claude (1880), Fredrick (1884), Aida (1888) Grace (1890), Walter (1893?) and my father Arthur (1896). Landor was born in Bury, the rest in Salford. I was born in Eccles, where the cakes come from!
Other related Lancashire surnames on the distaff side: Hindle and Cottam from Gt. Harwood, Grimshaw, Rothwell and Lowther from Church Kirk, Mills from Rochdale and Whitehead from Salford.
I have plotted the distribution of the name Heyes thoughout the UK. 60% of them STILL live in Lancashire.
All this, and more, may be found on my web page. It has the unlikely name of:
