Hello Karen,
My name is Amber Hatfield. I am a 40 year old adopted woman who has been looking for my biological family since the age of 13. I have very little information but it seems that you may have just filled in some of the missing pieces.

This is what I know.
I have a brother Glenn Jeffries.
We were born in Portsmouth, VA at the Naval Hospital.
Our Mothers name was Leah Deloe Hiatt.
Our Fathers name was Robert Glenn Cox.
Glenn (my brother) was born Glenn Edward Cox. 10/20/67
I was born Amber Diane Cox. 2/14/69
Shortly after my birth Leah returned with us from VA to her mother in Tulare County California.
In 1971 the state had to step in and take custody of us.
Our Grandmother was very ill so the state said she could not take us, she died just a few years later.

Most of this information has been obtained from the court appointed foster mother (Marilyn)that we got back in touch with years after we were adopted. She believed our Grandmothers name was Elsa but said it may be Elsie. I think the discrepancy in name may be why you and Robert had no luck finding them or a faulty memory. We were placed with her the day after the state took us from Leah. We lived with her for 28 months until we were adopted together. I was 4 1/2 years old when we went to live with our adoptive parents.
Marilyn took in many kids over the years and kept records and notes on all of us. She is in the process of searching for Glenn and my records. She knows she has the court papers from the day the state took custody from Leah and released us for adoption. She also believes she has the obituary from the death of our Grandmother. As far as she could recall off of the top of her head our Grandmother is buried in Farmersville, CA. She also seems to recall that Leah was living in Farmersville at the time we were removed from her custody. Marilyn said our mother did come to see us one time in the 28 months that we lived with her. I do remember, as does Glenn, the visit with her and I still have and cherish the Miss Beasley doll she brought me that day.
I would love to talk with you some more to see if maybe my mother is the Leah that you are looking for. I would also love to see the picture you say Robert carried in his wallet, to see if there is any resemblance. I would be more than happy to share pics of us with you also.

A bit more about us.
Glenn will be 42 this month and lives in San Diego, CA no children.
I live in Bakersfield, CA and am the proud mother of 6 children. 4 girls and 2 boys. They range in age from 21 years to 15 months old. I also have a 1 year old granddaughter. I always wanted a large family because I never felt connected as a child.
Looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
Amber
Just picked this line up in online research. My great grandfather was Lewis Ulysses Hiatt. My grandmother (his daughter) was Violet. I've heard stories that great grandfather did softshoe in chataqua shows and worked for the railroad. Have a typed autobiography of Alfred Hiatt (my great Uncle) about the family homesteading in Canada and just saw that his wife Helen Josephine(?) passed away this September.

Thank you, Craig.

The book is AVAILABLE -- which is exciting. And it is ALMOST affordable -- and the digital copy format is so interesting -- I'm retired and trying to winnow down my thousands of books (wish more of them were genealogy (:-) Affordable digital books. 60 years late for me, but I'm catching up with technology!

I've benefitted from Lynn Messina's HIATT research, which she has checked using Johnson's Hiett-Hiatt book, and placed a lot of it on-line --
in fact, Lynn used this message board to connect my husband and me to his HIATT genealogy. Once we'd documented names and birth info and family stories back to his grandfather, Enos Riley Hiatt of Randolph County, Indiana -- Lynn matched us to the whole HIETT-HIATT line -- and we found COUSINS! Fourth, seventh, eighth, ninth -- it was exciting and kept us traveling for years.

Lynn introduced us to the Randolph county historical society -- through their combined efforts we found a FIRST cousin, ALIVE, in his 80's -- that Bob never knew about. Still living in Winchester, Indiana. Still attending the same Quaker Church as Grandfather Enos Hiatt.

We visited. Bob was 74 -- and he and Burt looked like brothers. Posture, stance, the way they moved their heads while talking, hand gestures -- sense of humor -- they had the same inherited engineering gift from their Grandfather Enos Hiatt -- even Burt's home workshop looked like Bob's (only neater -- Burt's wife was a MUCH better homemaker than I was/am (:-) They both had patents -- and Burt had FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS -- a whole album, professional photos taken by Enos himself. And airbrushed, using his own invention, which predated (unpatented, secret) what we use today.

Thanks for the information -- and the chance to share good family-search memories with the message board.

YNK -- You Never Know where the path leads to which rainbows and interesting results.

Warm regards,

Karen@HiattFamily.com

Looking for information on Enoch Harrison Hiatt. Born approximately 1832 in KY or IL(census records show both). He appeared in Mobile, AL and married Mary E. Oden in Whistler, AL 5/4/1861. He moved to Choctaw county, AL after the war and remained there until his death. We do know that during the Civil War he was detached from the Army to work on the railroad in Mobile. (possible prior experience?). I have no information on any of his family so any information would be appreciated.
I can help you. Daniel's parents are Milton Hiatt and Roseann Adams. His *grandparents* are Wilson Hiatt and Lucinda Adams Hiatt, who are Milton's parents. Daniel was the brother of my great great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hiatt and uncle to my great grandfather James Henry Hiatt.

Milton died sometime between 1850-1860, although I haven't been able to get an exact date yet. Roseann was the daughter of John Adams and Susannah Childers/Childress. Roseann eventually went to live with her youngest son, William around 1870-1880 in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas where she died and is buried in Mount Muncie Cemetery (died of pneumonia.) I have a photograph of her grave.

Daniel is buried in Salona Cemetery in Lassiter County, OK. He arrived in OK Territory prior to the land rush and after Rachel died. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, sigining up with one of his Hiatt cousins, John Childers Hiatt in Springfield, MO. I have a signed affadavit by Daniel he wrote up in 1926 or so to attest to his cousin's military service so that his cousin could get a pension and a spot in the county veteran's home.

Daniel was in the Battle of Pea Ridge in central MO and a couple of other skirmishes. He was caught and served some time as a POW in Alton, IL at the penitentiary there and also served some time as a POW after a couple battles before escaping to Arkansas. He eventually came back after the war to MO and packed up his family and moved into Scott Co. AR, where I believe Rachel died and is buried, but I can't say for certain where she's buried.

How are you related to Daniel? I find him a most fascinating individual! I can scan up the affadavit for you if you would like to see it. Contact me at celedongeo dot yahoo dot com. I will happily give you what I have on him.

Take care!

Thanks. Looking at older census data also confirms all Wilson and Lucy Hiatt's kids were born in KY. He is still listed in Garrard Co KY on the 1830 census, with 4 boys and 4 girls.

I guess this means all the info pointing to him arriving in Missouri around 1809-1812 is wrong (such as the mention of him in "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford & Gasconade Counties, Missouri : from the earliest time to the present"). That is, unless he was constantly moving back and forth to have his children born in KY, which makes little sense.

I don't think that you will find a connection to Jesse as he lived in IA and sold his apple from his orchard there to the nursery. I know that the Hiatts of Howard Co., MO from which you are descended from originally came from MD through IN into central MO. The Todds came from VA through KY into central MO as I understand it but I may be a bit off on where they came from.

I'm related to the Todds and Estills of Howard Co. and know Estill, MO and the surrounding area fairly well. I used to go visit my mother's extended family there during my childhood holidays. My great grandmother's sister married Neriah Paul Todd and my great Aunt Elizabeth Woods married Clifton Rodes Estill. I'm also related to the Hiatts but not your branch of the family. Mine came from PA to Fredericksburg, VA to Garrard Co., KY to SE MO around St. Louis.

Your Theodore may have gone to Louisiana, MO but I don't think it was to sell the apple. Maybe it was to get supplies?

Here's to happy and hopefully not very frustrating hunting! Good luck!

Have you checked Lansing, Kansas cemeteries? Lansing is also in Leavenworth County, Kansas and sits just a few miles from Leavenworth. In Mount Muncie Cemetery & Mausoleum in Lansing, there is a listing for a Wesley Mourice Hiatt, b. 6/7/1898, d.3/23/1978. Perhaps this is your Maurice's son?

I have a full listing of Hiatt graves in this particular cemetery and can check for any other relatives of Maurice's if you are interested. Also, contact the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, they have all the old newspapers and other records on file there in their genelogical section. The papers in some cases date back to pre-territorial days.

Good Luck!

Does anyone have the book, "Hiatt-Hiett Genealogy and Family History" by William Perry Johnson? If so, I would very much appreciate if you could do a look-up for me.
I am looking for proof of birth and/or death dates for Lydia Hiatt (married surname Day). The dates were: b. Sep 4, 1819 and d. Oct 23, 1871 in Grant County, Indiana. A family tree on WorldConnect gave Mr. Johnson's book as the source, with the page number given as 317. Could someone please look for this entry and tell me if Mr. Johnson listed his sources for these dates in his book?
Does anyone have information on the parents of Daniel Hiatt, born 1822 in Kentucky, married Rachel Sullens 24 Jun 1844 in Franklin Co, Mo?
I have seen one source that lists him as the son of Wilson Hiatt and Lucinda Adams, married 15 Jun 1809 in St. Louis, MO. However, I am hesitant to believe this source as 1) it does not explain why Daniel was born fully 13 years later back in Kentucky after his parents had moved to MO, and 2) there were numerous other errors mentioned.
The source listing him as the son of Wilson and Lucinda can be found here:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.mis...
Any information to help confirm or deny this information would be greatly appreciated.
Gene,
In researching my Hollingsworth family, my GG grandfather Enos Hollingsworth married Ellender Hiatt on June 25 1844 in Jonesboro, Grant County, Indiana. An old family tale has Ellender as a daughter of the first white settler in Mill Twp, Grant County, Indiana. GrantCo Hist Soc says that settler was William Hiatt in 1824. The GCHS bio on this William Hiatt has him born in NC in 1775 passing in GrantCo, IN in 1855 with his wife as Eliz Sulgrove b NC passing in GrantCo, IN in 1859. Both William & Eliz are buried in the Friends Section of Estates of Serenity Cem in Marion, IN.
I do know that William & Eliz are the parents of Jesse Hiatt developer of the Red Delicious apple variety. However I have not been able to connect Ellender (Hiatt)Hollingsworth to this William & Elizabeth by document.
The family tale has been told to me by 3 of Ellender Hiatt Hollingsworths' g-granddaughters. I have not linked Ellender Hiatt Hollingsworth to this William Hiatt. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess I need to give a little clarity also. Ellender has been a brickwall for about 2 years now.
I'm not for sure we're talking about the same Hiatt line, Maisie (Maza) always lived in Patrick County, VA to my knowledge. I'm not familiar with her line she was a sister to my gggrandfather. They were a lot of Quakers in this family.

Two of their adult children, Emily (age 23) and William (age 20) were living with them. All 4 people in this household were listed as born in Kentucky. Daniel (age 28) & Racheal (SULLENS) HIATT were living next door.

Emily Jane HIATT married in 1854 to Robert F.
My grandfather was Edward Delos Rima 1901-1991. He had a farm in North Platte Nebraska, 1 son Edward, 2 daughters Mary Ann & June Mae. His was was Emma Mae Nelson. I'm looking to find any information on his family. We don't have much of anything to go on. We do know that his last name was a bit different then Rima before his family came to the USA, but we have no idea what it actually was. He stated his family was swedish, but we think he was really German, for he spoke German in his latter years to my son who was learning German in School. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance! Mari

Re: Hiatt/Hyatt/Todd

Mary --
Our HIATT family has a connection to Missouri -- one that I can't document . . . yet (:-)

Two Hiatt sisters, Anna and Nancy (daughters of Eli Hiatt and Nancy Conner) married in Randolph County Indiana, and traveled by covered wagon to Indiana with their husbands.

Anna Hiatt married her cousin,Eli Hodgson Hiatt, son of Jethro Hiatt and Hannah Hodgson (he was a widower with two children, MIRANDA HIATT b: 21 SEP 1849 in INDIANA
LEWIS HIATT b: 8 JUN 1852)

Nancy married Pleasant Stanley, born 3 Dec 1829

Some of their children might have been born in Missouri, but my husband's father and known older brother were born in Indiana.

Both husbands died in Missouri (Hiatt in 1869; Stanley in 1874) -- and the widows returned to Indiana -- and later, Nancy's son married Anna's daughter in Indiana -- and they were my late husband's grandparents. Yes, double cousins. Enos Riley Hiatt (1861-1936)and Mary Elizabeth Stanley Hiatt (1863-1932).

The family story is that the Nancy and Anna's "older children" remained in/around Carter County, Missouri. And so far, I can't find them! Don't even have a clue as to names, other than guessing about Anna's stepchildren, Miranda and Lewis -- I don't even know if they even WENT to Missouri, let alone stayed there.

So the Jesse Hiatt of apple fame is Bob's 3rd cousin -- five times removed. And yes, when researching the well-documented Quaker HIATT family, I have met 7th and 9th cousins -- life is surely interesting. Bob (DeLoe R. Hiatt, Jr.) grew up thinking he was one of few descendents in America of a recent immigrant. Maybe German.

And he was both 9th and 10th (those cousin marriages make the family tree interesting!)
9th and 10th generation American -- of the first HIETT Quaker immigrant.

If you find a HIATT-STANLEY Missouri connection to Bob's family, I'd be grateful to hear about it.

Meanwhile, I checked Lynn Messina's HIATT family postings on Rootsweb (she has most of the information from the HIETT-HIATT book by William Johnson)
-- and don't find any TODD connection. That is disappointing.

I suspect you might have to look further into Sophia's HIATT lineage to spot a connection -- and it might be like ours --third or fifth cousins! Still, it's a great family story, isn't it?

There are two family stories in the KONN and KING families that connect us to famous people -- and those aren't documented yet, either. Life is too short for all the genealogy research!

Good Luck!
Karen King Hiatt
Rocky River, OH (suburb of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County)
Karen@HiattFamily.com
