Michael Hibbert — I came across your note from two years ago Apr 2007. I am also researching my family history. I was interested in your reference to the name Partington. My Grandmother. born approx 1874. near Manchester, was Mary Partington. Her middle name may have been Jane. Her father was Peter and her mother, I believe was also Mary. She may have had a sister Louise and brothers James & Joseph. she married my grandfather Thomas Hibbert in the mid 1890's and my father also Thomas was born in 1896. They had a second child Beatrice around 1900 but my grandfather Thomas died early in the 1900's possibly 1902. He had sisters Blanche, Beatrice, Elizabeth and possibly Ann and Lilly and one or more brother, William.
If you or anyone reading this post has any connection I would appreciate hearing from them. My parents Thomas and Jane Hibbert came to Canada in 1930. Andrew

Just a reminder that in about 787 AD there was an Archbishop Hibbert in England. Do a "Search" for Archbishop Hibbert and you can read up on him.
Another theory is that it is an Anglo-Saxon name of HILDEBERHT meaning Battle Glorious.
Hi Ron, I too am compiling a Hibbert Family tree which I am starting today you can find it on the website called hibbert.tribalpages.com, I am searching for my late father's family members, his information is limited, his name was ARTHUR MATTHEW HIBBERT, born south africa 3.6.1931, his father is listed as Ben, born Ireland 1905, his mother is listed as Mary, born south africa 1905, he was given away at birth to a Philip and Nelly Wood of cape town, there are no adoption records. My dad married my mom Eunice Jacobs 14th November 1952 and had 2 children, my brother John Arthur Hibbert, born zambia 1953 and myself - Carol Linda Hibbert, born zambia 1956, I hope we can help one another, my email address is abrownprop@telkomsa.net, you should contact me as I have another website you can visit and see many many Hibberts, now to try and see where they link up to my dad.

Thought I had succesfully sent this previously, but it seems to have been dropped from the thread.
Apologies if you have seen it already.
George Hibbert and Robert Hibbert both had estates in Jamaica around 1800.
Their biographies can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hibbert
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Hibbert
They were both slave owners and philanthropists. George Hibbert founded the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, and Robert Hibbert founded the Hibbert Trust.
It is likely that Jamaican Hibberts are descended either from them, their families or their slaves.
The Johnathan Hibbert foundation is named after a notable Hibbert from Jamaica.
http://jhibbertfoundation.org/index.htm
Ray
I have been researching the Hibbert families interests in commerce, art, and the slave trade for many years. Recently I was filmed by the BBC at Hibbert House Kingston Jamaica. I have established a site www.georgehibbert.com which lists most of the information I hold. I am very interested in corresponding with those that hold original documents etc. Much of the Hibbert story will be told in the forthcoming book 'The Price of Sugar'.
I am interested in further information detailing the Hibbert's,
Merchant Fleet,
Art Collections,
Building of the West India Docks,
Portraits,
Botanical Interests,
Clapham Sect,
Cotton and Linen industries
and any unpublished histories or documents,
Nick Hibbert Steele.

The first reference I have found to the Hibbert name is that of Archbishop Hibbert in AD 775, under King Offa. If you do a "search" for Archbishop Hibbert it will give you the information.
The earliest Hibbert I have in Derbyshire is 1645, and the earliest in Wiltshire is circa 1540. The names tended to change spelling of course subject to the education, hearing and writing ability of the recorder.
Hopefully all the "Jamaican connected" Hibberts can work together to solve the mystery of their origin.

Hi Tricia

I would anticipate there would be lots of Jamaican Hibbert's.

My reasoning is that the Hibbert family of Manchester at one time had several plantations in Jamaica and controlled half the slaves on the island. On the presumption that with emancipation the freed slaves took on the surname of their former masters, as in America, then there should be lots of Hibberts of African heritage in Jamaica as well as some of mixed and European race.

I have details of the Manchester Hibbert's back to about 1684, they descend from the Hibbert's of Marple - but the connection is yet to be made - taking the Hibbert name back to 1506. The Hibbert's of Marple are thought to descend from Ralph fitzHubert a Norman knight who came across with William the Conqueror and was awarded lands in Derbyshire. His probable father Hubert de Curzon also came with the conquest and was supposedly awarded lands in Nottinghamshire.

Do get in touch if you think I can help further

There are two registered Hibbert Coat of Arms.

The oldest being that from when the Hibbert Family who purchased the Lordship and manor of Marple.

A second relates to the Hibbert family of Hyde. It is based on that of the Hibberts of Marple for although the connection could not be found it was accepted that the Hyde Hibbert's descend from those of Marple.

I would expect to find more Hibbert Coats of Arms. The three cresents on the two known coats of arms indicate that the Hibbert family fought in 3 crusades. As knights they would have had coats of arms, most likely under older spellings of the name e.g. Hubert, fitzHubert etc.

Also the Hibbert family of Manchester, Birtles Hall and Jamaica (another descendant line from the Hibbert's of Marple) reached sufficient elevation to gain entries in Burkes Peerage and may have coats of arms.

The Hibbert's of Hyde were important cotton manufacturers and politicians in Hyde and its surrounds. Their arms are reproduced in several places in Hyde Town Hall reflecting the members of the family who were Mayors of the town.

The Hibbert's of Manchester, Birtles Hall and Jamaica were the largest slave owners in Jamaica, at one time controlling half the slaves on the island. As part of the vested interest they were a large impediment to the abolishment of slavery in the British Empire.

The Hibbert's of Oldham, Bardsley, New Mills and Stockport and its surrounds are also highly likely to be descendants of either the Hibbert's of Hyde or Marple.

Please do feel free to contact me on anything Hibbert related.

Do you have his marriage cert - his father's name should be on it, which might help in locating John.

It will also give John's occupation - again, this might help. There is a John Hibbert, single, lodging in Newton in Makerfield on the 1901 (a coachman), born Baston, Derbyshire - but clutching at straws without further info.

Christine

Michael,
Many thanks for your 3 notes. Let's see if we can make a connection. My grandfather James William Hibbert was born in 1879 and was living in Bakewell Street , Beswick in 1881 with his parents Thomas Hibbert [born 1846] and Mary [born 1848] and Frederick [born 1865],Catherine[1873],John Thomas[1875],Ada[1882] and Herbert[1885]. I believe Thomas's parents were Thomas [born 1803] and Hannah [born 1810]. All the children ,apart from Thomas, are girls, Rachel[1842], Alice[1847], Ellen [1849],Mary[1851] and Hannah [1854]. I had noted another Hibbert family in Bakewell Street but had not been able to make the link. The big mystery for me is what ever happened to my grandfather James William ? He married my grandmother , Florence Celia Turnbull in 1903 and they had one child ,my mother, Mona Winifred Hibbert. I think he just "disappeared " not long after my mother was born. Maybe he emigrated to North America with Frederick ? I have also noticed a Herbert Hibbert living in Seattle in 1930 - possibly my grandfather's brother.
Any information about my grandfather would be gratefully received.
Kind regards
Adrian Birchall

HI ADRIAN

Is Thomas Hibbert's fathers name - Nathaniel?? I have found the census records for Thomas for 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. If his father is Nathaniel then the family are originally from Newton Heath abt 1816 and his wife Mary abt 1820 is from Macclesfield. Their children other than Thomas are:

William abt 1843, Caroline 1849, Ellen abt 1853, James abt 1855, Charles abt 1859,

HI ADRIAN

3 years later - sorry!! I do believe that there may be a connection here as in the 1881 UK Census, John Hibbert is living next door to Thomas Hibbert and Family in Bakewell St. Also nearby are the Lee and Booth families that are also in my tree. John is my great grandfather. I think his first wife had just passed on around 1878-1880. I think his age is reported incorrectly on the census register. John later married Elizabeth Meacham in 1887. I will do some tracking through the census and bmd index on Thomas Hibbert. I did pick up a bit of info on one of the messdage borads which mentions that Thomas' son - Frederick (born in Germany) later immigrated to Canada around 1911/12.

Regards,
Mike Hibbert

HI ADRIAN

I have census records for 1861 (residence 78 Benjamin St, Newton Heath and 1871 (residence 38 Dean Lane, Newton Heath)of Thomas Hibbert Senior. I think Hannah must have died before 1871 Census and both Rachel and Alice were married before 1871 - see below. Some info on the marriages:

Rachel married George Bown in 1865 (Mcr, St. John). (Residence 1871 Census, 22 Dean Lane, Newton)

Alice married Thomas Hay in 1866 (Mcr, St. John). (Residence 1871 Census, 281 Oldham Road, Newton).

Ellen married William Gent in 1872 (Mcr, St. John). (Residence 1871 Census, 20 Dean Lane, Newton). Hannah Hibbert also with her as a lodger, but not Mary).

Hannah also listed as unmarried and lodger in 1891 at 13 Acres Lane, Newton Heath and as unmarried head of household in 1901 Sale, St. Peters, 1 Hyde Road.

I will try some tracking of James William later.
Hi

Thank you for the reply. I also picked up on Thomas and Hannah and these names are more consistent with my tree. They are also from Newton Heath and I will do some research and get back to you. I believe that my great grandfather, John was related to your great grandfather, Thomas. My great grandfather had two children from Margaret Lee - (Caroline Hibbert - born Manchester 1875) and (Charles Thomas Hibbert born Manchester 1878 - my grandfather). Charles married Mary Catherine Mc Call in Manchester in 1908. He immigrated to Massachusets in 1910 and later settled in Harrisin, Newrk, New Jersey. Arrived first in Bristol Co, Massachussets (cousin James Arthur Jones paid his fare). My father, John Hibbert was born in Harrison, New Jersey in 1923. He returned to England with his mother (Mary Catherine Mc Call) around 1926 and grew up in Mcr before immigrating to Rhodesia in 1949 and later to South Africa where he settled around 1951.

My great great grandfather was also from Ancoats and he was also John Hibbert abt 181 - first wife was Mary Ann Bailey and second wife was Caroline Topping (formerly Caroline Plymouth).

I am trying to trace Charles Thomas Hibbert my grandfather who I believe settled in Newrk, New Jersey and died soon after 1926.

HI

Just got John Hibbert's marriage cerificate (2nd marriage to Elizabeth Booth, formerly Meacham in 1887). John is widower, Elizabeth is widow). John's father's name is given as Thomas Hibbert (profession - Packer abt 1823 - through my research Thomas was married to Sarah from Ireland born abt 1822). Children are: William 1848, Thomas 1846, Joseph 1850 - from the 1851 Census. Address is 191 Rochdale Road.

Going back to John's first marriage to Margaret Lee in 1873 his address at time of marriage is 19 Pilling St. St George is the sub reg district. He gives father's name as John and profession is also Packer.

If we look for Thomas Hibbert in 1881 Census, his address is 19 Pilling St, but only one son William is staying with him and wife Sarah. William is also a warehouse packer.

Hi Anne

I think that John and Martha may be my great great great grandparents. I am trying to get a record of their marriage from Manchester Cathedral Archives. My direct that I have thusfar is:

John Hibbert abt 1811 and Mary Ann Bailey abt 1811 married 1834 Manchester.
Re: John Thomas HIBBERT

Christine,

Thanks for your reply - on his marriage certificate it records his father as John Thomas HIBBERT, Joiner (Journeyman).

I have searched and looked through ALL the John Hibberts / Thomas Hibberts (with a father of the same name) on the 1871-1901 censi to see if I can find a match.

I haven't yet found a John Thomas who was listed as a Joiner. As both John and Thomas are very popular names there are quite a few!

It may be that I will just have to wait for the 1911 census; as I know his adddress at this time.

Regards
Annette

Trying to Find - John Thomas HIBBERT

Dear Ancestry Members,

My Great Granddad was John Thomas HIBBERT.

My main problem is that I don't know where "Thomas" was born. Listed below are the things I do know / details from certificates:

He was aged 49yrs when he married my Great Grandma in November 1913*.
He was aged 76yrs when he died in March 1841.
I have therefore estimated his birth year as 1864.
One member of the family thinks that he was born on 31st October, possibly in Durham, but they were not sure about this - another member of the family always thought he was born in Wales!

From 1902 onwards I know he lived in the Ashton-In-Makerfield / Bamfurlong / Platt Bridge / Abram areas of Wigan, Lancs.
At the time of his death he lived in Newtown, Wigan.

* When he married my Great Grandma at Wigan Registry Office in 1913 she was recorded as Martha Jane BINKLEY.

I have no idea where the name Binkley comes from; I have researched Martha's family back a further 2 generations.
Martha's maiden name was BATE and when she married her first husband her surname was BAKER.
Martha was widowed and living with her 5 children in Normanton, Yorkshire on the 1901 census.
Thomas and Martha Jane's first child together was born in June 1902, Wigan, Lancs.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Annette
