I noticed there is a lot of talk about Hickens around the Walsall, Wolverhampton, Bloxwich area. I'm currently living in Walsall and I believe my great nan and grandad did also.

Does anyone have a Tom Hicken, born around 1914, or an Emily who married Tom who was born I think around 1912? These are my great-grandparents so I believe it would be a good place to start. Also, things I've overheard indicate that Tom's dad was also called Tom, I have no year for when he could have been born.

In reponse to your query, I have a Florence Ann on my tree b.24 November 1873. Her mother was Lucy J Hickin. As I expect you have found the name changes between Hicken & Hickin - even between siblings. I believe Lucy was in service and had Florence before she married James Perks on 28 Feb 1876.
Hope this helps.
Hi Cliff,
Are still looking for information on H.G. Hicken's Cash Store? I don't know if this will be of any help, but I have been researching my great grandparents and beyond.

From family information, my great grandfather on my Dad's father's side was Herman Hicken. We had been told he was in the Civil War, and that he was alive in 1900. The only H. Hicken I have found that was in the Civil War, was an H.G Hicken. He was in the Arkansas Militia, and in the 1860 Arkansas Census, he is listed at Ft Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas as a merchant. This would fit the description of being the H. G. Hicken's Cash Store. Hopefully this helps
Sue Hicken

I know this was an old message but here we go. I have a John Hicken b 1794 in Burbage Leicestershire (don't know who his parents were as I haven't gone back that far) - he married 3 times (i) to Sarah in 1818, (ii) to Eliza Palmer in 1843 in Hinckey and (iii) in 1859 to Catherine Crow. My grandmother was a Hicken. Does anyone out there have anything useful on this track? Jean (NZ)

I have a John Hicken married to a Maria, both born England c1813, in Boston twp, Summit Co, OH in the 1850 US census, with 10 children, half of them born in England, the rest in OH. They range in age from 17 to 2.
I have also found an IGI record of a John Hickin who married a Maria Garrat Hancock in Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, Eng on 4/29/1832. So it sounds as though the John and Maria are the same. But I haven't been able to locate John or Maria after 1850. I have found son Charles I think in Wayne Co., OH (next door to Summit) whose oldest son is also John. The first John was a farmer, Charles was a blacksmith who by 1910 was in the real estate business. Charles's son Frank, b1870, became a physician in Cleveland, OH, and would be my grandfather-in-law.

The children of John and Maria are shown in the 1850 census as follows:
Eliza Hicken 17 ENG
Sarah A Hicken 15 ENG
Richard Hicken 14 ENG
Luke Hicken 12 ENG
John Hicken 10 ENG
Lydia E Hicken 7 OH
Charles Hicken 5 OH
Harriet Hicken 4 OH
Walter Hicken 3 OH
Lewis Hicken 2 OH

I can send it to anyone who thinks they might know her,and the rest of my lost family. My mother says they lost contact with the MacDonalds in Scotland sometime in the thirtys.I hear I also am related to MacPherson and MacNeals or McNeals...This is a million to one shot but what the heck...

My Grandfather was Harry Hickin he moved to Yorkshire from Bloxwich Staffs, he did have a brother Alfred who I think was known as Fred.My mother was his daughter Catherine, she was known as Kate she went to work in Middlesex in the 1930s, she married and lived there until her recent death. I would love to hear from you if you think we could be related.

My father Philip Hicken was originally from Warwick born February 3, 1927. He had a sister Mary who died in childhood, and another sister Audrey who died a number of years ago. Their father was Alfred Hicken and mother Della Mauvereen Everall died when he was about 12. His father remarried a woman named Ellen. They have both since died.

I am mostly attempting for find information on Della since my father knows very little about her. There are marriage records, but no birth record can be found anywhere. He knows nothing of her family.

However any information about the Hicken family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The Family Hickin/Hicken

I am looking for info on my part of the Hickin family and to try and see how it links with all the other Hickins/Hickens scattered around and about. My Great Great Grandfather Richard Hickin was a coachbuilder in London, he left the business early in the 20th century to go to America where he is supposed to have worked for Henry Ford. After several years in America he returned to London and died around 1930.His son, William John Hickin, my Great Grandfather, took over the coach building business when Richard left for the USA, apparently this caused some bad blood between them. William John had two sons, my Grandfather Richard William Hickin and John F Hickin. John had no children and is still alive aged 95, my Grandfather had one child, my Father Richard Lewis Hickin. Between 1959 and the mid 1970's John corresponded with an American lady, Verda Hicken of Logan Utah USA who was tracing the family.Verda traced back to a Thomas Hicken in Woodhouse Leicestershire, christened 1773, who was a soldier who fought at Waterloo, he is reputed to have been an ADC to the Duke of Wellington. He won two medals which are now with the family Hicken in America. Verda also found relatives in Canada who she corresponded with. I believe Verda has passed away. If anyone has any info that links with what I know please contact me at Email: steve.hickin@tube.tfl.gov.uk

She met her husband on the internet and moved out along with a great dane and a pomeranian/collie cross! Her grandmothers name was Hickin, also from the West Midlands. We concluded that we must be related somewhere along the line! If you are interested I will give you her e-mail address.

I am looking for any info on my grandfather Henry Hicken who, I think, was born in Ky. He was born in 1882 and married Marie MacNamara when he was 18 (?). He died in Philadelaphia around 1944. If you can supply any info I will be most grateful. I have not been able to find anything about him.

Hello,

I have come along way with my Hickin research of the area of walsall, bloxwich, brownhills since February. On our Hickin again there seemed to be no Hickin cousins. It is a mystery, this may have something to do with thousands of them being girls and not taking the name with them.

Please contact me if your Hickin's are from the staffordshire, worcestshire at any point as they are all related. (This includes the ones that went to Canada!!!)

Jenny Evans

angel_jen_18@yahoo.com

Re: Benjamin Franklin Hicken

I am a sister of Kristine Hicken. My name is Susan Hicken, and I have some more information on Benjamin Franklin Hicken that might help us find out about him. He was born in 1866 in Illinois, and died in St Louis Missouri 8/15/1903. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and was killed in an accident in the railyards. His death certificate has him listed as Frank rather than Benjamin. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Thompson, and they had 5 children. Mamie, Ralph, Ray, Orville and Frank Jr. Sarah moved the children to Denver, CO because she had TB. She died in Feb 1906, and Sarah placed her younger brothers in the State Home in April 1906. Mamie also had TB, and died in 1908 at the age of 19. I was told Sarah died in Denver, but have no record. Mamie did die in Denver, and is buried in Fairmont Cemetary. She had a friend by the name of Clyde Murdock who kept in touch with the boys till they left the home. Any information on any of these people would be helpful. At one time, Clyde Murdock might have had family papers that Sarah had him hold onto.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
I searched for your relatives in my database but daly they were not there. I do have 42 Thomas Hickins but virtually all pre-date 1870.

A little about myself. I'm an environmental health officer, I have two boys Thomas and Samuel 11 and 9 but sadly I am separated from their mother.

As far as your own research is concerned the starting point would be your grandfather's birth certificate.

Hickins in Leicester

1895 is a little early for the IGI index.

I suggest you search through the marriage records held at St Catherines House. Start looking backwards from the date of the birth of their first child. Once you have found an entry for the male relative make a note of the date and reference number and then cross check it by searching on the same date for his wife. The marriage certificate will give you the bride and groom's ages and more importantly their parent's names. Good luck.
If you need any further help e-mail me on craig.hickin@lineone.net.

My great great grandfather was Henry Hicken (the spelling later changed to Hickin along the way in Australia where I waws born). Henry was born in Birmingham UK in about 1824 and went to Australia as a young man (in the early1840s?) where he married Mary Dunn in 1844. My problem is identifying Henry's parents in Birmingham from my location in Vancouver, Canada. Perhaps he had siblings who also immigrated to the New World. Can anyone help?
