Sorry, I should know better :)

Ellen sometimes states that she was born in KY and other times IL (when she is young, she is listed as born in IL, when she is older, and prossibly answering for herself, it is KY). Her parents, assuming that Eli and Nancy were her birth parents, were living in Sangamon, IL (no Township given) in the 1850 census. Before 1850, they were in KY, most likely Casey County where Eli was born.

In 1860 the family is in Subdivision 17, Sangamon, IL. In 1870 I can't find her - but her parents are in Wilson, DeWitt, IL. This is the year that would most likely show a husband....

In 1880 she is living with George and Matilda in Wilson, DeWitt, IL (page 8 on Ancestry). I think I have her in 1900 and 1910, also in Wilson, DeWitt, IL.

Ellen (White) Hickman?

I am trying to find the husband of Ellen (White) Hickman.

Ellen was the daughter of Nancy Jane Moore and Eli White. She was born in Illinois in 1851.

Nancy Jane Moore had 3 brothers - John, William and George. When George More\Moore (spelled both ways) died in 1898 there was a dispute over his will. From the court records, it appears that George More left his estate to his wife Matilda and that after her death, the estate should go to Ellen Hickman. It was quite a large estate ($12,000 in real estate!) and George's brothers were trying to questoin the validity of the will... all very intriging.

In the 1880 census, Ellen and her chidren (Rosa and Kate are living with George and Matilda, Ellen is listed as married but there are no Hickman males in the household.

Ellen's sister, Perry White, married a Hutser Hickman - am also wondering if the husbands were related?

Does anyone have these Hickman's in their tree?

Thanks!

Please be advised that this is a quick search and needs to be verified!
I believe B.N. Sears is the son of Lawrence (Lowrence)& Malinda Sears. I believe that Malinda's maiden name was Lee and that she was married to a Mr. Bennett, widowed & then married Henry Sears (TN). I found Malinda in 1860 in Yell Co. ARK with Henry Sears (1825 TN) with both Sears and Bennett children..Bennetts being older.
In 1870 I found Malinda (b. 1821-23 TN) widowed with daughter Caledonia (b.1857 AR) & Lawrence (b. 1862 AR) and they were living with John Lee (KY)and his children. John was 2 years younger. In 1880 I found Malinda age 57 living with her son Lowrence age 19.
I could not find anything on Lawrence (who married Mary Weems in Pope Co. Dec. 18th, 1890)so I am assuming that they moved from AR and had B. N. Sears elsewhere?? Can't find the link but this needs to researched using all possible spelling variations.
PS..I also found that Rebecca Hickman and her husband must have died as her parents were raising Rebecca's children.
Pss...Looks like Caledonia Sears married Wiat Parker in 1878 in Pope Co.
This should get you started in the right direction hopefully.
Licia Babb
gsdmoonshadow@aol.com

Used Jane Hickman 1830 - 1913 for DAR Membership?

Jane was born in 1830 in Tyler or Harrison Co., VA(WV) and died in Tyler Co., WV in 1913. She was my gg-grandmother. It would really help me for membership in the SAR, Sons of the American Revolution if someone has already used her for membership in SAR. I'm having a real problem proving Arthur and Margaret Hudkins Hickman were her parents. Her birth was not recorded. Her marriage record does not list the parents names. Her death was not recorded. Help!
Jimmie Barnes
Homosassa, FL
jbarne17@tampabay.rr.com

Hi Tim,

My brother and our cousin spent several hours looking at Richie County records, looking for any record that mentioned Arthur, Margaret, Jane, or a connection to any of her siblings. They didn't find anything. This must have been a very private family.

Now, Jane and her husband Josiah are in the court records, purchasing and selling property.

We also looked at Richie Co. history books and found nothing on Arthur and Margaret Hickman.

There are genealogies that show she is the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Hickman but the SAR will not accept them.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Jimmie

Thanks for the response.

Jane Hickman married Josiah Collins in Tyler Co., WV on 22 Feb. 1844. At that time Tyler Co. did not record the parents names.

For many years Jane and her husband lived tree farms from Jane's parents and in one census they are living beside her parents. This was in Ritchie Co., WV. Jane's parents left no no deeds or wills. Neither of their deaths are recorded. There is absolutely no paper trail for Arthur and Margaret Hickman to connect them to Jane Hickman Collins.

If someone has used Jane Hickman Collins for membership in the DAR it will really aid my membership application to the SAR.

Jimmie Barnes
Homosassa, FL
jbarne17@tampabay.rr.com

Martha Maria Prynn b 1850 Camberwell London UK was my g/grandmother and I am searching for information concerning her marriages - I think there were three. Husband 1 John Hickman ?2 Henry Hickman 3 Joseph Hawkins. Two of her children had middle names of Stanbridge and it is possible someone by that name may have fathered at least 2 or maybe 3 of her children. Any clues and/or comments would be appreciated.
This is a very important connection as John Hickman/Ann Wingate/Ann Blount is what ties to the Royal lines of England.

African-American Draytons of Colleton County and Charleston County, SC

I am searching for my great-great grandmother, Affie Drayton in 1870. She first appears in the Federal Census of 1880 with Luke Drayton and three children, Luke, Jr., William and Lawrence. They are living in St. Phillip's/St. Michael's Township on the Charleston Peninsula. Luke Drayton, Sr. most likely came to Charleston sometime after 1870 from Colleton Co., Blake Township (Greenpond), and may have been married previously to a woman by the name of Phyllis. Two of his sons, Luke Jr. and William, are most likely the children of Phyllis, not Affie. According to the census records, Luke, Jr. was deaf and dumb and died in 1886. Lawrence (aka Larry), my great-grandfather, lived in Charleston unti his passing in 1933. He was married to Josephine Drayton (nee Collier) and they had seven children.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family line, I'd be interested in hearing from you. Thank you, and God bless.

I am looking for my maternal grandfather's family who originated from Abbeville, SC. The relationships are very confusing up until now, but I know that Prince Bradley was born in Abbeville SC in or around 1894. My grandfather (Clyde Bradley) and his siblings (Eva and Ruth) were also born in Abbeville during the early 1900's. They were mulattos and I am trying to piece together a very scarce amount of information to determine who their parents actually were. Their grandmother may have been Eva Bradley. Other family members included: LaRoma Bradley and Olivia Schumate. Sometime after 1910, part of the family (which included my grandfather and great-aunts) migrated to Atlanta, GA and lived on E. Cain Street for many years before moving to New York, NY. During the 1920's Prince Bradley opened a luncheonette on E. Cain Street and married a woman by the name of Mamie Simms. Prince passed away in 1936 and is buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery (later renamed Southview Cemetery). I have some photos which may or may not be of any help in identifying these ancestors.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family line, I'd be interested in hearing from you. Thank you, and God bless.

My maternal great-great-great grandfather was Lofton Hickman (wife, Rosa). They had several children -- my great-great grandfather, John Joshua Hickman, Sr., was one of the younger sons. Other siblings were Phillip, Charlie and Susie. John Joshua Sr. had a wife named Willie Ann Hickman (nee Carter). Her father's name was William Henry Claire and her mother was Celia Carter. They lived in the following towns in King William County, VA: King William, Acquinton, and Palls, and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church. They are related to the Roanes and the Braxtons of King William, VA -- brothers intermarrying with sisters and vice versa. I'm trying to find the old plantation Lofton was freed from immediately following emancipation. His first Federal Census appearance is in 1870 where he is living with a Braxton family in Acquinton Township.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family line, I'd be interested in hearing from you.
Hi I think you will find that Rose was married to Anthony Hickman - her son was Sir William at Gainsborough, and his wife was Anne Willoughby

Ruth

Yes I knew about St Clements Dane - he was also in a lot of trouble with the Puritans during the Civil War and Commonwealth period. I have his will which helpfully names a lot of his children and their spouses, I have the Hickman family back to Walter son of Walter = Alice Jephson, and for several genearations beyond. He died 1540. Anthony Hickman = Rose Locke(the above Anne's grandfather) was heavily involved in trade, in partnership with his wife's brother - they were in trouble with Mary for sheltering Protestants and fled to Antwerp during her reign, Anne's father was a lawyer married to Anne Wallop. I have posted my tree on ancestry, but there are a couple of errors which I need to correct

Ruth

I have been struggling with the Hickman family for sometime and was hoping you could help.I had got as far as Benjamin Hickman b1697 St Bride Fleet street,London -father Henry and Ann(could be spelt Anne. This was all from Lincolnshire Archives as there is a link between William (Gainsborough Hall) and Henry Hickman, but there are two Henery's (father and son). I have been unable to get the links here.
