Hi! im so excited to find your post. My grandmother was Maris starkweather colley(died 1967) and Betty Alice's was her sister. According to the 1930 census both betty, who was almost 5 and maris, who was 2, were living with their parents, ralph john and madelin starkweather. on the 1940 census Maris, now 12, is living with her aunt Alberta and uncle Howard Dornhoefer. Alberta is Madelin's sister. My mother does not know why maris lived with them. Nor, did she know that Betty lived elsewhere. She said that the three children ( ralph John (1933), Maris, & Betty) were together as adults and they all had a relationship with their parents, who were divorced sometime after 1933.

I don't know anything about the Hoyt family. However, one has to wonder if Emeline Hoyt is related to Bessie Emeline Higby?

your post answered my question about the Hester & higby name!

How long did Betty live with the Hoyt's? Do you know why she lived with them? My mom is pretty sure that Madelin actually died between 1964-1966, not 1944 like you stated.

Betty was married to herbert volpe.... So, which one of the " Volpe" girls is your mother?

Tiffany

I have been trying to find more on Alice Higby who was 10 mos. old when the 1870 census was taken. She lived in New Brighton, PA with her father Charles Higby and mother Elisabeth (Lizzie J. Rhodes) Higby who died 2/25/1877). Alice had a sister Ella J. who was 2 in 1870. If this is the same Alice, her father was Charles, a Civil War vet, who died in McLoud, OK 2/19/1903. His father was Charles H. Higby, a physician, who died in May 1860.

You may also join the group if you plan to take a Y-DNA test in the near future. Results from other testing companies can be manually entered. A paid membership for Ancestry.com is not required.
Higby Family Ancestry

Bessie Emeline Higby (1875 - ??) married Leon L Starkweather (1875 - ??) around 1896. In 1903 Ralph Starkweather was born, married Madeline Hester E Ames (1904 -1944) who had my grandmother Bettie Alice Starkweather (1925-2005)

i found that around age 4 she moved in with Hoyt family, but there is no sources related to who her real parents were? What I was able to gather thus far is that I think her mother was Emeline Hoyt (1828 - ??)

Does anyone have more information to shed light on this subject. Thank you

Doug Troxtell

Austie Higby (Dghtr of John Higby & Mindwell Lewis??)

In my research I have come across an Austie Higby b.1764 d.1845 (daughter of John & Mindwell Higby). She was married to a Lemuel Wilcox (via World Bride Index). Anyway, some family lineages show that Lemuel & Austie (or Anste - that I have seen on some trees) had several children: Lemuel Jr b1787, Anste b1788, William b1789, Lewis b1792, Lyman b1793, Harriet b1796, Alfred C b1798, Jeremiah b1800, Columbus b1804, and Angelina b1806. My research leads through Alfred C and Angelina (siblings). I am hoping someone can help me with this line: Alfred C & Angelina moved to Columbus, Franklin Co., OH and both are found in the census. Alfred C and Angelina are both buried in Green Lawn Cemetery. I have traced Alfred C and Anglina back to New York by way of Angelina's interment record stating her parents were Lemuel & Harriet Wilcox. Now, comes the tricky part...no where in my research have I been able to locate a "Harriet" Wilcox married to Lemuel...only Anste or Austie. I have also not been able to come up with any documentation showing proof of Lemuel & "Anste, Austie, Harriet" and the names of their children. Can someone show me or direct me to where I can locate resources showing proof of their marriage, lineage, and their children. This family was based in Saratoga County NY. I have documentation of Alfred & Angelina's migration to OH from NY; however, I do show Angelina back in NY in the 1860 census living with a Harriet Miller (who I am thinking could be her sister as the age fits from the list of siblings above Harriet b.1796). Is Harriet named after her mother?? Confusion has set in and I am in hopes that someone can provide proof or documentation. Thanks, Claudia.

My Uncle Johnny Pitts showed me a large amount of information gathered on the Higbe family. It was compiled by

Robert D. Faust, Sr.
11321 Broad River Rd.
Irmo, SC 29063-9671
rdf2472@aol.com

It does have a few errors in it. One of which is me. It lists me as the child of my brother for some reason. Kind of hard considering he was 4 when I was born.
My name is Shawn Higbe. Grandson of Robert F. Higbe who is the son of William Becker Higbe and grandson of Wellington Winfield Higbee according to the information in the paper. Born in Akron Ohio and raised in Toledo Ohio. Former Chief of police who died in Columbia SC in 1927. What's interesting is that in his obituary in the newspaper article they list him as William Wellington Higbe.

I'm originally from Andrews SC. I'm pretty sure I'm your cousin. If you are who I think you are then our grandfathers were brothers. I now live about six houses down from my cousin Tommy Higbe's home at the lake in Summerton, SC.

There is a wealth of information on the Higbe family available from Mr. Faust for a small fee he was requesting to help cover his expenses for anyone interested.

Shawn

My father, Fred Higby is a decendent of the founders of the Higby Resort in Big Moose, NY. He remembers visiting the resort and lodge often as a young man after WWII with several of his cousins who lived on Higby Road in Utica, NY. Unfortunately, the Higby Lodge was sold in the 1970's and is no longer owned by the original family. I had a creamer pitcher also from the Higby Club at the Big Moose Lodge, but misplaced it several years ago. My father was also an integral part of forming the Tipperary Hill Harmonica Band in Syracuse, NY in the 1950's. We still have many relatives living in Lewis County in New York.

Very interesting...with variations is spellings throughout time, our Higbys may have a previous connection...We are from our progenitor, Richard Lyman, who came to Boston in 1631 with his family from High Ongar, Essex, England (his wife was from the neighboring Kent County...his will was the first to go into probate in Hartford, Connecticut...I was curious about the Higby family because they were an excellent family who married into the Lyman and North family (the Norths from New York State, Fly Creek)...some of these fascinating families were marrying here in this country and were moving progressively from the East to the Midwest and beyond...without all of the modern conveniences, it is amazing how they all did it...It is awesome that you got back to me. Thank you so very much, and best wishes to you. Kind regards, Susie LaMontagne

Hi Sue,

I don't believe my Alice Higbee is the same one as yours....
Alice Beavers Higbee, was born April 06, 1889 in Waterloo, Kingman Co., Ks., and died August 15, 1974 in Enid, Garfield Co., Ok.. She was the dau. of Mahlon Hezekiah Higbee and Elvira Ann Lakey. Mahlon Higbee was the son of Hezekiah Higbee and Abigail Costello.
It is possible our Higby/Higbee families connect somewhere up the line, as mine have been traced to John Hygebed, born 1452 in England. They migrated from Long Island, New York around 1646 to New London, Conn. His descendants migrated from Fairfield Co., Ct. to New Jersey around 1715.

Gary Tharp

I know that in my family, an Alice Higby (daughter of Richard Higby of Fly Creek) married Sylvester Lyman. I have some more info. in a storage box, but I know that Sylvester died in Wisconsin in a train accident when he was young...they had one daughter (I think she moved back to New York) and I often wondered what happened to her. ~ It is interesting that Alice Higby Lyman's mother also had the maiden name Higby (Cynthia Higby married A.P.Lyman and was quite a lady!)...I would assume that Alice would have re-married after Sylvester's death, but I do not know if this is the same person you are referring to! - Sue LaMontagne

Bride Pawned Trousseau for Rail Ticket - Mrs. M. E. Crowley to marry P. Higby

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 5 February 1903, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

BRIDE PAWNED TROUSSEAU

Woman on Her Way to Be Married Caught in Bad Predicament

Wichita, Kansas: Railroad stations are not considered pawnships, but chivalrous nature caused the Santa Fe ticket agen here to stretch a point and accept the trunk of a stylishly dressed lady in lieu of cah as a pledge for a ticket to Guthrie. The lady in question was Mrs. M. E. Crowley, a widow who had lived in Wichita for a few months, who was on her way to Oklahoma's capital, where she is to marry P. Higby, a banker of Coyle. The trunk contained her wedding finery. Mrs. Crowley's fiance had sent her a check with which to buy her trousseau and a railroad ticket. After making her purchases she had just a $5 bill left. Then she gave it to a little boy to get it changed, but he never returned. She waited nearly an hour, and just a few minutes before the train time blushingly informed the agent of her predicament. The agent was impressed with her sincerity and furnished transportation without much ado

Russell Gilman Higby - California Death 1949

Los Angeles Times, July 26, 1949:

FLYER DIVES TO DEATH OVER WIFE'S GRAVE

STOCKTON, July 25 - A young Stockton pilot terrorized this city for an hour today with repeated buzzing and then power-dived to his death in the graveyard where his wife was buried four months ago.
He was Russell Gilman Higby Jr., 23, son of a well-to-do produce merchant here and in Bakersfield.
Sheriff Carlos Sousa said the young man was flying his father's monoplane. He took off from nearby Orange Airport. Then, for about an hour, he made repeated low-flying runs over the city, and finished with a 60-deg. power dive from 2000 feet into the cemetery.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Higby told officers their son had been despondent since his wife died in Bakersfield April 1 in childbirth.

Higby Family

Hello,
I too am a relative of Daniel Elton Higby. He is my 6 times great grandfather. Daniel Elton Higby--Daniel Higby--Daniel Higby--Leonard Higby--Clara Higby--Norman Mumford. Norman was my grandfather. I have been researching my family since 2000 and met my distant cousin Jann from this website. We have put many pieces of the family puzzle together, but are still missing a few. Would love to hear from anyone with ties to this family.

Some of this information parallels that of my grandfather, William Higbe. (A recent search of his obituary tells me his middle name was Wellington.) We were not close, but I know he lived in Charleston, SC when I was a child, and I thought he served in the Air Force, not the Army. I recall that he worked at a post office in Charleston while he and my grandmother, Evelyn, lived there. My father, Thomas William Higbe, is an only child and served in the Army. I know that there is extended family, but unfortunely, I don't know details.

Do you, by any chance, mean Jedidiah Skidmore? It sounds like you're talking about one of my ancestors. If so, we may be related=) My biological father decends from Richard Skidmore (Scudamore) and Thomas Skidmore (Scudamore), Richard's son with wife Agnes/Anne Lawrence. Both men are from Mayshill, Westerleigh/Westerly (seen it spelled both ways), Gloucestershire, England. Richard was born about 1580, married in September of 1604- to Agnes/Anne- and died in November of 1606... almost two years after his marriage?! His son, Thomas, was born just one year (or less) before he died... in 1605. Besides Agnes/Anne, Richard was also married to Joanna Baldwin and Sarah Howes. Thomas and his wife, Ellen Prigg(e)/Priggle, had one child... John Skidmore (Scudamore), who was born in April of 1643 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.Thomas died in October of 1684 in Fairfield, Connecticutt, USA. This entire thing is sooooooooo confusing to me! It took me about an hour or so just to sort it all out, and I'm still not sure I've gotten it all correct?! It's very confusing.

Thanks Brenda for the information.

I hope I have my line correct and that my Judath J. HIGBY (b ca. 1646) is a child of Edward HIGBY and Judidiah SKIDMORE.

I don't have a marriage date for Edward HIGBY and Judidiah which would help. It seems they probably married in Conn. or NY.

I haven't done much research on this family. Do you know a good source for information about the HIGBY families?

Brent
bbaughn@aol.com
Thanks Brenda for the sources of your data. Ancestry.com seems to be the best on-line source. I also use it a lot at a local library. Some times it's difficult to tell what is correct or not...a common problem in genealogy.

Maybe church records exist of the marriage of Edward HIGBY and Judidiah SKIDMORE.

Brent
bbaughn@aol.com
Thanks for the interesting data.

Do you have the names of the 5 children of Edward HIGBY/HIGBIE/HIGBEE (b. 3 Feb 1616) had with his 1st wife, Judidiah SKIDMORE? Do you have one of the children named Judiath Jedidah HIGBY (bc 1646-7) who married a Samuel JACKSON (bc 1645 - d. before 12 Feb 1717 Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT -- will: 30 Aug 1712)?

Where is Pequot Harbor? Is this the harbor of now New London, New London Co., Conn. or maybe in Fairfield County? Were the lots #23 & #13 in Pequot Horbor?

Which library in Illinois is your g-grandmothers family material?

Do you have Judidiah SKIDMORE's parents as Thomas SKIDMORE (b. before 1604 Mayshill - d. before 13 Nov 1684 :Inventory -- will 20 April 1684 Fairfield Co., Conn.) and Ellen WHITEHEAD ( bc. 1600 Wayne, Herefordshire, ENG - d. before 1660 probably Fairfield Co., Conn)?

I have not seen this will...maybe it's not in Fairfield Co., CT?

Thanks for your help,
Brent
bbaughn@aol.com

Wow, thanks for all the great information on Edward HIGBY and wife Judidiah SKIDMORE. You have been a big help.

It is looking like I have an error in that Samuel JACKSONs wife, Jedath HIGBEE/HIGBY, is the d/o Edward HIGBY.

I will see if I can get more info on Samuel JACKSON (bc 1645 - died before 12 Feb 1715) and his wife. I need to find a copy of his will dated 30 Aug 1712 Fairfield, CT. Maybe there is another HIGBEE/HIGBY family or maybe the name HIGBEE/HIGBY is incorrect for his wife's surname.

Sometime finding wife's surnames are very difficult. A lot of research has been done in early CT, so I hope I will be able to find an answer.

I live in the Los Angeles, California area and there are several good libraries near by. I've done very little research on the JACKSONs so far. I need to make a library trip.

Thanks,
Brent
bbaughn@aol.com
