Burrell Higdon and Nancy Roberts(?)

Nancy married Burrell c1805. They lived in Laurens Co., GA and had about 6 children. Burrell died in 1845. Does anyone have Nancy's census for 1850?

She is with her daughter, Mary Ann, and son-in-law, James Shepard in 1860 in Laurens Co. There is a Nancy Higdon in the 1870 Mortality Schedule in Pulaski Co., GA, and refers back to a David Rowland and Emily. Is this Nancy who was married to Burrell Higdon? I thought it could be Emilia, wife of Nancy's deceased son Robert, but Emelia has a record in Laurens Co.

Can anyone help with this? Thanks. Virginia

I realize this thread is a few years old, but I have been trying to pin down the William Higdon/Jane Boarman marriage without much luck. (Benedict Augustine Higdon's daughter Susan "Sudie" Higdon was my maternal grandmother.) In "The Maryland Semmes and Kindred Families" there is an entire section on Major William Boarman's family. At page 195 it claims that Benedict Leonard Boarman's daughter, Jane Boarman, "died spinster 1783". Any help to clarify this will be appreciated.
Ron Miller

short story, my mom ran into some (down the line) cousins today at a hospital in Bessemer Al, they are from my Grandad's ---Father's---Brother side. Here is the info I have and looking for more :)

My Grandfather is David Riley Higdon Jr. of Birmingham Al (d. 1996) his sister was Jo-ella Higdon (d. 2002?) of Mississippi. Their father was David Riley Higdon Sr (d. ?) (my great grandfather) My great grandfather has many brothers (one's name is Paul, that was the only one my mom knew-her great uncle) and one sister, Cora Higdon.

They are descendants of the Higdon Alabama Higdon's. We were told that on of the brothers mentioned above was one of the founders of the town.

Sorry I do not have any dates at this time. We will see the newly found cousins tomorrow and I will get more info.

Re: Higdon Ancestory Looking for parents of Ignatius Higdon & Lucia Simpson

I have some lineage on the Higdon family name. John Ignatius Higdon came from Yorkshire England around the 1670's. He had 6 children. Each child had large families. One of his son's was John Jr 1693-1737, and he was married twice: once to a woman named Susannah in 1715 and again to Bathia Semmes in 1731. I do know that a branch of this family at some point moved to Kentucky. I only have the lineage to William who would be John Jr's brother. It was very common for women to die in childbirth and men would remarry quickly and have more children. So any of these ancestors could be related. Please feel free to email me with questions. Warmly, Erin (grandaughter to a Higdon)

I am not a member of your family, but I found a couple of postcards that I'd like to give to the right family.

One card has a real photo picture of Ruth Higdon, she looks about 8; there is no date, but it is addresses (but not mailed) to Mrs. Edith Hodges of Topeka, Kansas.

the other card has a real photo picture of three people, a young lady, a boy, and a girl. It says: Charley, Alex, Paul Higdon. This card is addressed to C.B. Higdon of Topeka Kansas and it was mailed in 1910 from Oklahoma.

If this is your family, or you can help me find them, please e-mail me at JanetFugateGumm@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Janet

Re: Anyone heard of Higdon Pickle Relish?

Here you go! I haven't made it but I have tasted this recipe made by my friend's sister and it is a great accompaniment to meat dishes. By the way, Molly Higdon was married to my grandfather's brother, William Matlock.

Higdon Pickle Relish

1 quart each of cabbage, green tomatoes, white onions, celery.
1 pint of green pepper.

Chop and put in jar a layer of the above mix and salt alternately.
Stand 24 hours. Drain well (squeeze.) Pour over weak vinegar and Stand 24 hours, squeeze. Put into a jar with ½ cup mustard seed, tea cup of mustard, cover with good vinegar, pin a cloth over the jar, place the jar in a pot of water, let water boil around it for 1 hour.
(We put it in glass pint jars and just set the covers on, then screw down after it has been on stove an hour.)

I found this entry from an American Dialect website for higdon from a Pennsylvania Civil War era newspaper in 1863---clearly it's an old classic:
http://listserv.linguistlist.org/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0512d&...
It says:
16 September 1863, THE AGITATOR, pg. 3:
HIGDON.
To 4 qts. cucumbers chopped fine, add 2 qts. onions also chopped, sprinkle with salt, drain over night in a colander under pressure, then add 1 tablespoonful black pepper, do. cayenne, half an ounce cloves, do. cinnamon, nutmeg, 2
handful mustard seed; put all together in a jar, and cover with strong vinegar.--Half green tomatoes may be used in place of all cucumbers.

And another historical entry about Higdon:
Ohio Farmer (1856-1906). Cleveland:  Sep 22, 1866. Vol. 15, Iss. 38; p. 299(1 page) :
HIGDON.--Last season our folks made a sort of pickle called _Higdon_, which we all liked so well that I will send you the recipe, believing if it was better known it would be far more generally used. Higdon is made of green melons, cucumbers and onions. Take off the rinds, and slice and chop them fine; green peppers are also used. Then add mustard seed and spices. Press it into a jar and cover with vinegar. In a week or two it will be ready for use. If onions are not agreeable leave them out. It is a nice pickle.
...
Searching for the wife's information is allot of guess work. But if you notice on the census that you've seen it always tells you the names of the states the peoples parents were born in. That's a start. Also if you are fortunate enough to find out where they were married (city, county or just state) and possible the year you may be able to find court records of the marriage which will give you the maiden name of the wife. Not all city, county or states have this record available and sometimes the county's name changes because it is split up into several county's. Also not all states have this information available on line but many do. I know it can be frustrating but if you keep searching somethings come up that will lead you to the answer. I'm still looking for allot of information as well. I keep having to go around in circles to find information. Good luck with your search. Remember the census sometimes have names mispelled so don't disregard information right of the bat. Hang on to any possibility and mark it a maybe or with some other word that reminds you it's only a possibility. There are allot of duplicate names all over the place. So there may be allot of people with your grandfather's first and last name but have different middle names or have a different birth date, etc.
Dianne

Have you checked census records? Also another suggestion is to look up the city or county he was born in. Some counties have geneology information and other records available on line. Some states even offer death certificate information which gives you allot of information about relatives.

It could be from any branch ie: Higdon, Potter, Jackson, Carpenter or unknown surnames. Does anyone recognize the woman or know of the photographer?

Diane,
Thanks for your help. My problem is that I'm not sure exactly where he was born. I have either Benton city, Benton county or Spring or Springtown, TN. Since I posted this message, I think I have a lead. I only had a name of one sister, but was told my whole life that he had 7 or 8 brothers & sisters. I could only find 4 in TN, but have since found that they lived in TX for awhile and there are 4-5 more born there, so I'm hoping I'm on the right trail now. I think his father b.1845 & grandfather b.1801 were both named Thomas, so I am researching this line now. I am such a novice at this, I really don't know all the places to look other than these paid sites. I have a trial membership with ancestry.com, so I'm trying to go thru as much as I can before it runs out.

Anyway, thanks again. I will try the counties that are listed in the census I found them in. If you have any other hints or suggestions, they will be very welcome.

I do have one more question. How do you research the wives if you don't know their maiden names, since this isn't in the census'?

William C Higdon, born June 5, 1878 in Spring or Springtown, Benton county/city TN. The only sibling whose name I know is a sister, Ida. There were supposed to be 8-9 siblings. He was in the Spanish American War according to the inscription on his headstone. It reads:

PVT 20 BTRY FA REGT

I have found his draft card for WWII, but nothing on SAW.

I have have some possibilities, but nothing I can be sure of.

I think his father might have been Thomas & mother Elizabeth, who I found in an 1880 TN census.

Thanks for asking.
Cindy

Higdon

------------------
From:k8ren
I hope this is not too much off-topic. I have a dear friend (not a Higdon) whose family grew up enjoyed a pickled cabbage and green tomato relish called Higdon. She has never encountered anyone else who has heard of it. I found a couple references in 1860s Pennsylvania and Ohio newspapers to Higdon relish with the same ingredients as my friend's recipe.

Higdon is such an unusual name for a relish that I assume it must be named after the family that thought it up.
I am not a Higdon researcher, but the name Samuel Terrell Higdon surely captures my interests.

Do you know of any connection between your Higdons and the YON surname? My G-G-Great Grandfather, Terrell Higdon Yon, was born in 1820 in Georgia. I am not 100% sure about the county, but I think it was Laurens which is not too far from Burke. Terrell Higdon Yon’s father, Jesse Yon, was born on 12/21/1790 somewhere in South Carolina.

Ever since the given name ‘Terrell Higdon’ was introduced into our tree it has been used multiple times across several branches (At least 5 times before 1900 and several more times after that). And this name was not just handed down by my Terrell Higdon Yon (b. 1820). Once of his sisters gave it to one of her sons, and one of his brothers also gave the name Terrell Higdon to one of his sons.

Did Samuel Terrell Higdon go by Terrell? It would be nice to figure out the relevance of this name to the YON surname. As of yet, I have found no blood relation to the Higdon name. Maybe it was someone who was just close to the Yons at this time.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight.
The 1850 census places them in Benton County Tennessee. There is a Thomas that would have been born in 1845 and his father's name was Thomas born around 1815 has he is listed as being 35 in this census. There is a Simeone Higdon age 70 and then the nexte family is John Higdon 24. I am guessing because they are together that they are all related.
