Tried the web site listed on this forum but could not get the site to come up for me, so here are the Higgs I need info on.
1. Elias b abt 1835 marr Polly Ann Painter. Need his parents & siblings & children for him & Polly. She was the dau of John Painter & Deliah Roberts Aleshire.
2. Simon P. b abt 1810 marr Susanna Louderback. Need their parents & siblings. Their dau Elizabeth b 6 Apr 1839 marr Henry Painter who was also a son of John & Deliah. Also need children for Henry & Elizabeth.
3. Jacob T. b 10 Aug 1858 marr Barbara Ellen Painter 23 Nov 1876. Need Jacob's parents & siblings. Barbara was the dau of Joseph Painter & Margaret Lucas. Also need children for Jacob & Barbara.
4. Susan b abt 1840 marr Pendleton Fleming. Need parents & siblings for them. Their dau Estella b abt 1868 marr Barney Calvin Painter 8 Nov 1891. Barney was the son of Noah Painter & Susannah Huffman. Also need children for Barney & Estella. Any info appreciated.

Thankyou for your reply. I did have William Sayer Higgs temporary down for Stephen Higgs father but I have changed that all now. I have been adding quite a bit to the family tree, I can see you are busy working on it too. Alot of the info came up automatically from Ancestry. Like you my tree is set to private as I have many photo's on there. If I can be of any help please let me know. Not sure if I gave you my email address its

The information for the Higgs is on the IGI, I did put the family down on my first message way back in 2006
William Higgs & Harriott Holloway are the parents of :-
Letitia Higgs baptised 13 December 1824
Frances Higgs baptised 24 September 1826
Rosina Higgs baptised 14 October 1827
Ann Maria Higgs baptised 25 May 1828
John Reuben Higgs baptised 24 July 1830
Stephen Higgs baptised 2 February 1833

Letitia was living with her brothers John & Stephen on the 1841 census. It is Letitia who is my direct line.

Because I cannot locate a marriage for Letitia to Joseph Abel Pickett I ordered her sisters marriage certificate to confirm her fathers name and hoping it may give some clues from the witnesses names, but sadly I do not recognise the witnesses names, so that is why I was wondering if you had Stephen's marriage to Sarah Mary Ann Hawkins.

I don't know where you got the name William Sayer Higgs as Stephen's father?

The other Stephen Higgs who was born around the same time as our Stephen can be found on Rootsweb family trees.

Maybe Chris who is researching this family too might have Stephen's marriage certificate.

What makes you think that William married again?

I have the names of Sarah Mary Hawkins parents if you need them?

I did have the name William Sayer Higgs down for our Stephen's father but no mother. If William Sayer Higgs is not the father then the data I have on about William Sayer Higgs would be void.

The only info I have on our Stephen is the Marriage Certificate Q1 vol 1a - Page 66. I am thinking of ordering it in the future, bit busy at the mo.

Stephen had 2 siblings John and Lottina or (Leticia)

William Sayer Higgs is the son of Henry Higgs & Elizabeth Sayer he was born in 1798 Coleshill, Berkshire, he married Phillis Martin in 1829 Coleshill.

I don't know what children William Sayer Higgs and Phillis had.

There were 2 Stephen Higgs born around 1833 in Berkshire and they both married girls by the name of Sarah, our Stephen married Sarah Mary Ann Hawkins. Our Stephen was the son of William Higgs & Harriot Halloway and the other Stephen Higgs was the son of Joseph Higgs and Letitia Bristow and he married Sarah Fisher.

I am wanting information from Stephen's marriage to Sarah Hawkins to help me with my search, ie; fathers name and fathers occupation, names of witnesses and Stephen's occupation.

You mentioned in one of your earlier messages that William married twice, can you send me what information you have via my email address Sedds48@aol.com

Thanks for your message. William Stephen Higgs and Ellen Deane were my Grandparent! There is a william sayer higgs Born 1798 that is coming up as Stephen James Higgs father on the IGI records. I am not sure about this now since I saw your last message. Have you heard of a William Sayer Higgs?

Thanks to both of you for your repies, it appears there are 3 of us researching this family.

I am trying to establish parentage for my ancestor Letitia Higgs born around 1824, elder sister to your Stephen James Higgs. (IGI)

Because I cannot locate a marriage for Letitia to Joseph Abel Pickett born 1837 Witney, Oxfordshire. (Letitia was 13 years senior to Joseph), I obtained the marriage certificate for another of their sisters (Rosina Higgs to John Hudson) this certificate shows Rosina's father as William Higgs and his occupation was a Gardener, it does not mention that he was deceased.

I found Letitia on the 1841 census living with her 2 younger brothers John and Stephen, so I presume the parents are not around.

I think Frances who was born between Letitia and Rosina married twice. I have not found a marriage for Ann Maria and am not sure who John married, he may have married a Esther in 1848 but would need to obtain the wedding certifcate to confirm this.

I am interested in the other family you mention (William's 2nd family!)

Firstly, I must tell you that I am researching this family for an elderly friend so it is not my own family I am talking about.
Now, can you tell me why you have discounted Wlliam Higgs born 1796 in Buckland, Berkshire and married to Harriet? The IGI gives a baptism for William, son of John Higgs and Martha Watts 7 May 1796. As all the children were born in Buckland it seems reasonable to me to think that their father is likely to have been from there.

Stephen James 1833 is also my friend's great grandfather through his son William Stephen who married Ellen Deane. I think this makes you second cousins!

And yes we do live in England, in Essex. I will ask my friend if she would like me to make contact with you.

I have William Sayer Higgs Born 1798. I am not sure what sort of a life William lead. I think he could have had 2 wives going at the same time as many of the children born clash with the other family. Stephen James Higgs Born 1833 was my Grt Grandfather. Are You in England if so I will call to explain.

Hi,

In the census of 1871 Stephen James Higgs is shown with wife Sarah and children Ann Maria, Frances Fanny, Agnes Jane, Amelia and Ann Matilda Hawkin, his wife's mother. So I searched for a marriage between Stephen Higgs and Sarah Hawkins and found Mar 1860 Kensington 1A 66 Stephen and Sarah Mary Ann Hawkins. This is confirmed by the 1881 census where Sarah appears as Sarah M A Higgs.

John Higgs chr: July 15, 1715 Parents: John Higgs and Martha possibly Hussie or Hossie(Spelling?) married Oct 30, 1709 South Oxfordshire, England. Other children Elizabeth (Nov 1, 1709), Mary (Aug 26, 1711), William (Mar 10, 1716), Martha (March 25, 1718)

John Higgs chr: Apr 14, 1715 Parents: William and Elizabeth Higgs. Other Children: Elizabeth (Nov 1, 1709), William (Sept 2, 1711), Samvell (Nov 25, 1717), Hollon Thomas (Feb 15, 1719), Samuel (Dec 13, 1722), Thomas (Oct 21, 1725). I think up through the William of 1711 in this group.

Contact the town and see if you can get a wedding certicate. It might cost you money. But they usually have parent's names on them. Unless not filled out completely

Seeking information on Charles Higgs born in England. I have two dates of birth. Marriage Certificate has DOB as 18 Dec, 1863 and his Death Certificate has his DOB as 2 May, 1864. He died 22 Oct, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
He married and Divorced Katherine Evans and had five living children. Charles b. 1887, William b. 1890, Flossie b. 1891, Lottie b. 1899 and Harriet b. 1902. They lived in Pittsburgh, PA. Charles worked in a steel and iron works as a puddler. I am trying to find the father and mother of Charles.

forgot to say I am a decendant of Thomas(1768)and Elizabeth Grover`s (2nd wife)third and last son- Thomas 1802 (born in south stoke) who married Elizabeth cock of cholsey, oxon. They had nine children.

According to the parish records some details on the children of John Higgs and Ursula Butler were (all dates are chris dates: Elizabeth (Mar 16, 1741)John (Oct 10, 1746), Samuel (Aug 7, 1748), Mary (Nov 5, 1750), Ursula (Feb 19, 1752) and Thomas (June 20, 1756).

Through an online research request I was able to find a marriage license for William and Sarah in the South Stoke parish records.

1765 Nov 18 by licence
William Higgs, farmer & Sarah Mason, sp.
Witnesses: Abraham Deane & Elizabeth Manville

I thought maybe I would be able to find a baptism record for a William Higgs in South Stoke records but there is no record of one from 1730-1750 so maybe he wasn't born there (or wasn't baptised). Also the marriage license for William and Sarah doens't list the parents names so from here down might be a challenge.

It is a hard book to find. I haven't seen it myself but I have access to it and have a lot of the information and trees that are in it. William Higgs (The one married to Sarah Mason) isn't directly mentioned in any of the trees but there is an implied link noted in one of the trees. William and Sarah had two children and then kind of fell off the radar - I am assuming they moved but I haven't pinponted exactly where yet. Good luck!

That's the book! It has family trees in it so has helped me guide through the branches. It is about 500 pages and can be hard to find. If you would like me to email you the tree information that I do have from the book just let me know! I have been trying to fill in as many of the Higgs branches as I can and the book has been helpful with that.

From what I can see you are correct - there is a link which actually then takes the Higgs name to about the 1400's. I have recently gotten copies of the pages from the Higgs book and I have one generation that may be a little fuzzy but for the most part I think I am on the right track. I have that it goes - Thomas - William (1742 - wasn't born in South Stoke) - William (1711 - Born in South Stoke), William (1666) etc. Take care!

Have you been able to get any farther back them William and Sarah? I have some promising leads but haven't been able to confirm much as William born somewhere else and the records are available for purchase yet with the area he was born at. I believe he was born in Marcham, Berkshire and so was Sarah I think.

I have just published a biography of my father, Egbert Thomas Eames (1892-1971) a complex and interesting character. A WAYWARD INTELLECT The Life of Egbert Eames - by Lida Logan (that's me). The book is available online.He
was a prolific letter writer. In the book are letters written to him by friends eg Jas.M.Higgs dated 1911. He and my father were in the civil service together in their early training. I have the originals of these letters, some written from Bournemouth, one from London, where he was working. He would have been about 20 I should think.

Stephen Higgs (Buckland, Berkshire 1833) married Sarah Mary Ann Hawkins in Kensington, London March quarter 1860. Their children were as you state except it was Letitia not Lettia. In the 1841 census, Letitia and her brothers John and Stephen are living in Buckland, apparently without parents.It looks as if Letitia is caring for her two younger brothers.

I'm sure they did have other children, but I'm not able to check at present I'll get back to you on that. I think they were born in South Stoke, Thomas is ,anyway, in 1768.
My conclusion is that William Higgs and Sarsah mason are Thomas' parents. They are married in 1768.
I'm using South Stoke, Mongewell and Checkenden parish records.
They are available from oxford family history society as microfiches at about £3.00 a set.

Thanks for information on william Higgs' and Sarah Mason's marriage in 1765.
Like you I can't find a baptism record linking this William with any South Stoke predecessors . At the moment I'm assuming a direct link to another William (1711-1785).
In response to another query, I working on one more male child from William's marriage, a Richard Mason, born 1767.

I'm working on the assumption that William links with one of the two Williams born at South Stoke in 1711, 1716.
There's probably a generation missing which I can't locate at present.
If there is a link, the two above Williams I think can be tracked back to John or Griffith Higgs who are recorded in South Stoke in the 1580s

My great, great, great grandmother was Lettia Higgs born 1824 in Buckland, Berkshire, she married Joseph Abel Pickett (though the marriage cannot be found)around 1856.

The family I have found on the IGI for the Higgs are the parents William and Harriat Higgs nee Holloway and their children Lettia, Frances 1826, Rosina 1827, Ann Maria 1828, John Ruben 1830 and Stephen 1833.

There were two Stephen Higgs who married Sarah's both born in Berkshire aroudn the same time.

Do you have the marriage for your Stephen to Sarah?

Hi - My great,great grandather was also Joseph Malaby Higgs. I am trying to trace back the Higgs line to the original family in Bermuda. I am finding good information on the Tuckers with Captain Daniel Tucker but the first Higgs is something I am having difficulty with. I did see on some lineage that Higgs may have dated back in Bermuda as far as 1612 through a Thomas Allen Higgs from Oxford England. Dead end......... Hope you are still working on your site. I am reading a good book called Sea Venture about one of the first groups of several ships sent to help the Jamestown colonists but was caught up in a hurricane and separated from the original group and ran aground in Bermuda. It does mention Captain Daniel Tucker ( someone attributed to poisonening the Indians in a false peace treaty!), in Jamestown but have not got to any Higgs as of yet..... I do know that Tucker was sent to Bermuda as governor somewhere down the line maybe 1614? I have always heard family stories of pirates and a few other bad intentioned fellows in the family. trying to find the connection... Oh family lore!

There is a query on this board that I found regarding a Bejamin Higgs and Julia Wood parents of Benjamin Higgs, Emeline Higgs (my gr,gr maternal grandmother) and Ann Maria Higgs(Moshier). Emeline (Higgs)Williams daughter Mary Elizabeth Williams married my gr grandfather William V. Tilton. I am just beginning this line so I have no valid information yet. There is a IONB query listed here with info on Barton, Higgs, Wood and Moshier. Here's luck to both of us on our searches. Carole
