Hi I was a Higham and my family lived in Westhoughton and Hindley from the 1750's ( and probably before)until recently. I have traced my family back to Mary Higham ( born approx 1771, buried 1854)? maiden name and she lived in Baldwins Farm Westhoughton( which is still there) with her family and her son Richard lived there after her and all my close family have since lived within 5 miles of the farm, but I have not been able to find her marriage date which I think was to Joseph Higham, he was buried in 1854, but I am still checking the parish registers.
However my male family names have been Richard, Joseph and William, and Peter not James
I have a Richard Higham( born 1801)and Ellen Higham ne Magnall(in my family)but they lived and died in Westhoughton near Bolton Lancashire.
However there was a child Abel in the household born 1860 so it could be a family name.
Hope it is of interest.
D

My great grandparents were Edward Joseph Higham and Hannah Amelia Seaman. I have seen Hannah's name down as Sullivan on a tree somewhere else and realized that this could be the same person but with the name wrong. Edward and Hannah had 11 children. They came from Norfolk, but moved to London in the 1880's. I am not sure if this is the same family. One child was Ernest J Higham, but BMD has him as Alfred Ernest born in King's Lynn in 1882. I cannot trace him after the UK 1891 census, so perhaps this is the same as your grandfather. Please let me know.

Hi Dave,

It's been more than 8 years since your post, but I'm also interested in Highams that apparently came from the Bolton, Lancashire, England area. James is the predominant male name in our family, too.

We're descended from James Taylor Higham, b. April 6, 1831 in Philadelphia, PA. His parents (whoever they were) were born in England. In 1851 he migrated from Philadelphia to Keokuk, IA with Abel Higham, b. Nov 14, 1806 in Bolton or Westhoughton, Lancashire. They share the name Higham and both have Quaker connections, but I don't know how they're related. I believe Abel is the same who emigrated from England to Philadelphia in 1828. His parents might have been Richard (b. abt. 1778) and Ellen Higham (b. abt 1782) who were "disowned" Quakers in Philadelphia in 1832.

I can account for all the James Highams descended from our James Taylor Higham, but perhaps you and I are related through his ancestors.

If you or anyone else has information about these people, please share!

I hope you found your Richard Higham relatives. This probably doesn't help you, but I have a Richard Higham in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1832, who was disowned by orthodox quakers for joining Hicksite quakers. He was apparently born in Westhoughton in Lancashire in 1778. There are several Richard Highams of Lancashire. I'm particularly interested in any information about any Highams that emigrated to the United States before 1831.

Hello there
I just noted your family connection to Eydon and wondered whether I could be of any help? I am secretary of the Eydon Historical Research Group so we have access to a lot of information, plus I live in the village so I can always get you a few local snaps. We have just set up a new website at www.eydonhistoricalresearchgroup.org which may be of interest to you. If you have any documents or photos relating to Eydon they may be of great help to us, so I would really appreciate a copy. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards, Alison

It is Robert 1786 I am interested in.

My Robert Higham was a soldier in Cornwall in 1805 and 1806. He was with the 3rd Garrison Battalion and his roots were probably in Lancashire, although we have never been able to find him. 1786 as a birthdate would make him 20 in 1806 which would be about an age to marry.

Now if you know what happened to your Robert of 1786, then I can eliminate him from my search which would be a great help.

thanks

Sue jenner
