I believe we may have exchanged emails a few years ago through Jeff Palmer, about Frank's grandson Samuel, my grandfather. I have a picture of Frank from Jeff. I used to have a dagurreotype of Lorena, Laura, and Kate together. My dad knew some of them, had stories about Aunt Hat. I know a little about Nancy as well. I would be happy to exchange information

William Baker Hight is buried at the Bowden GA cemetery. I have pictures of both of his grave markers. William B is the son of Wiley Gilbert Hight. Wiley Gilbert is the brother of Howell Hight Jr., my GGGGrandfather. In the book The Hite-Hight Families of Sussex and Surrey Counties VA, by Robert Wallace, there is listed a brother of William B Hight, listed as Fielding Hight being born in 1818, so three years older than William Baker Hight. I believe the F Hight, listed in Co B, Floyd Legion, Georgia State Guards to be Fielding Hight, William Baker's Brother.

Interestingly enough, since the original posting, we've located another grave marker in Anniston AL for a Frank M Hight, CSA, 1840-1899. I'm now on the search for that one too. :)

I found some interesting information on Henry Hight's first wife, Margaret Dennison, recently. She was married to John W. Elder during the Civil War. They apparently divorced as they are married to other people after that. Margaret's father's (Joseph Dennison) estate lists 4 of Margaret's children as surviving her (she died before her father). Monitor and Manville Elder and Ida and Della Hight. The year is abt 1885. Henry Hight/Hite claims not to know the whereabouts of any of them, but we know that the girls come back into Henry's life. It is all quite mysterious that Henry would not know where any of these children were. Their share of the estate was turned over to the Circuit court and as near as can be told, never distributed. It only amounted to $45 to be split among the 4. contact me off line at krettinger@kconline.com for more.

In the 1860 census, my Samuel, was in Miami Co., but they spelled his name as "Hite". My g-grandfather James Thompson Hight went on to Cass Co.
I am descended from Asa Hight and Elizabeth Shewey Hight. They were in Allen Co. Indiana in 1851. I can follow them from there through Williams Co., Ohio and Defiance Co., Ohio through a brief stay in Jones County, Iowa in the 1860's. They were in Kansas by 1870. My records show that Asa and Elizabeth had 12 children (including my gr-grandmother, Hester, between 1824 and 1850. There is probably a connection somewhere, but I do not have a Jesse in my records. I have quite a bit of info on Elizabeth Shewey (Shue) Hight - but very little on Asa. Would love to hear from you if you can make any connection. Jean Evers

I am a descendant of Josiah's brother Samuel Hight, b. 1803 in NJ and d. 1887 in Cowley Co. KS. They were born in Hightstown, NJ and their father was Jacob Hight b. about 1775 in NJ. They left NJ about 1812 and settled in Campbell Co. KY. I have also found our Hight's in Clermont, Brown and Hamilton Counties in OH. During the Civil War, they moved on to Miami and Cass Counties in Indiana. I saw the pic on your website of Joseph Hight and can see the family resemblance.
Rev. Lawrence M. HIGHT accused of murder (1924, Mt. Vernon, IL)

IS HELD IN DEATH

PASTOR ARRESTED IN UNUSUAL DEATH OF WIFE.

Death of Another Man Also To Be Investigated

---

Edwardsville Intelligencer (Edwardsville, Illinois) > 1924 > September > 19

Mt. Vernon, Ill., Sept. 19 -- Rev. Lawrence M. HIGHT, 46, Methodist minister of Ina, 12 miles from here, waived preliminary hearing when arraigned here today before Justice of the Peace T. Morse, on a charge of first degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Anna, and was ordered held without bail for action by the October grand jury.

---

Mr. Vernon, Ill., Sept. 19 -- A network of circumstantial evidence which police say, tends to indict Rev. Lawrence M. Hight, pastor of the Ina Methodist Episcopal church, was being woven here today about the death of the pastor's wife Anna.

And while the investigation of this was being pushed, another probe into the death of William Sweetin, with whose widow the name of the pastor has been linked, was under way.

A positive statement that Mrs. Hight died from arsenic poisoning and not from Ptomaine as had been believed, was in the hands of the coroner today. Another report on the Sweetin case was expected by afternoon from the coroner's chemist to whom the exhumed [vieal; sic] organs of the man were sent yesterday.

Pending the second report, the pastor is in jail here, formally charged with the death of his wife, but still protesting his innocence.

Dr. William D. McNally, who analyzed the vital organs of Mrs. Hight was decided in his opinion as to the cause of death. "There were large amounts of arsenic in the liver, kidneys and stomach," his statement reads. "There is no doubt in my mind that the woman's death was caused by the poison."

Some action by the Methodist Episcopal Conference which meets at Carbondale Tuesay also is expected. Rev. Hight already has hade [sic] a statement denying guilt in connection with his wife's death to the ministers of the district[.]

"I am not guilty of my wife's death," he declared[.] "I had nothing to do with it[.] It is bad enough to lose her, to have my home broken up and my children separated from me. I am not guilty of any wrong doing."

Pending his indictment by the grand jury the first week in October Sheriff Holcombe said October 13 had been tentatively agreed upon as the trial date in circuit court here.

Meanwhile the little community of Ina is in an uproar with its population about equally divided between those who believe the psator guilty, and other who believe his protestations of innoence [sic] and regard his arrest as a persecution.

The report of the Chicago chemist to whom the vital organs of Wilford Sweetin were sent last night, is being awaited with intense interest. Sweetin died at Ina about two months ago under circumstances that caused much comment. He was a member of Rev. Mr. Hights's church. A coroner's verdict at the time tated [sic] that Sweetin died of natural causes.

"I don't know why they say these awful things," Rev. Mr. Hight told newspaper men today when interviewed through the bars of the Mt. Vernon jail. "I had some arsenic in the house but we ohnly used it for poisoning rats. Anna, my wife, was taken sick a while back. I don't know what was the matter with her. I wasn't sick and the children weren't. I don't see any reason why they want to connect me with her death, or with the death of Wilford Sweetin[,] a member of my congregation[.] There's no reason why I should want to get rid of them.

"My children are separated from me--why there's no reason on earth why I'd do a thing like that. They're staying with my married daughter Marie Robert[;] the youngest is 14 years old, and Mildred is 16. The worst part of being in jail is to have them out of sight."

Peter Hight/Hite (1760 - 1840) in Montgomery County, Virginia

My family and I have been desperately
searching for the parents of my gr-gr-grandfather PETER HIGHT - who was first found in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1820 (over the age of 45). It is not known where he came from but he already had a large family of 9 (4 adults and 5 children) according to the 1820 Census of Montgomery County, Virginia. His name is listed as "Hight" although on some documents I have found in the courthouse, it was recorded as "Hite". I have several items (papers) which he signed in his own handwriting and he spelled it "HIGHT"
He worked for the Prestons of Smithfield Plantation. So did my gr-grandfather
JAMES PETER HIGHT/Hite (b. 1818, d. 1886) - who was overseer for William
Ballard Preston. JAMES PETER HIGHT was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Linkous. Her parents were John Linkous (d. 1822 the same year Eliz. was born), and Elizabeth Trollinger.

My grandfather WILLIAM BALLARD PRESTON HIGHT/Hite was named for his father's
employer. He lived 1858 - 1935 in Montgomery County, Virginia.

We have spent months and months and months and months searching and
researching every Hight, Hiett, Hite, Hyat, (you name it) line, trying to
find Peter's parents and where he came from.

We have 2 hints: 1) James Peter Hight (my gr-grandfather) had a middle-age
"moment" in his 50s and left his family (all the kids and wife) and married
another woman 2 counties away (Floyd County, Virginia). The marriage
application states that his parents were "Peter & Catherine Hight" He married CHLOEY CARROLL, in her 30s. THey had 2 children before James P. died in 1886 - Andrew J (b. 1879) and Jane P (born 1881)

2) My father BENTLEY HITE, who passed away in 1992 at the age of 91, told me
hundreds of times throughout my life that "our Hites went to Ohio and came
back"

When James Peter Hight pulled his little "marriage switcheroo" in 1873, the
older sons (some of them adults) broke ties with him completely and tore his
name out of the family bible. There was also a split in the family after
that time as to how we spelled our name. Peter Hight and James Peter Hight
always spelled their name "Hight" (I have their signatures on courthouse
documents). My grandfather William Ballard Preston Hight spelled his name
"Hight" when he married in 1882, but started using "Hite" shortly
thereafter. My father used the name "Hite" exclusively after he went to
college in the 1920's and I was born "Hite", When my 20-year marriage ended
in 1996, I used the divorce opportunity to legally change my name to MARTHA ANN HIGHT. I married again in 2001 and am now Martha Hight Anderson.

Peter Hight had many children (reading from the 1820 and 1830 census of Montgomery County, Virginia), but the only two I know about definately are JAMES PETER HIGHT and MARY HIGHT (who married Henry Kelly in 1836 in Montgomery County).

James Peter Hight had John T., Daniel, Abram, Gordon, Joseph, William Ballard Preston, Floyd Crockett, Mary Elizabeth and Catherine J. Both girls died of fever in 1854 (per Montgomery County death records) at the ages of 12 and 2 respectively. John T. lived in Radford, Virginia as an adult and had 2 daughers - Deborah and Melvina . He served in the Civil War as a Confederate Soldier. Daniel married late in life at age 40 to Nancy Gusler of Giles County, Virginia. Abram joined the Civil War as a Union Soldier and never returned (presumed killed in action). Gordon married Amanda Harrell and had a large family and lived in the Pulaski area. Joseph married Victoria Strader and lived in Giles County, Virginia. Floyd married Emalilne Price and lived in the Pulaski area. My grandfather, William Ballard Preston Hight/Hite married Martha Jane Scott in 1882 and lived in Montgomery County, Virginia.

I will be happy to share my information with anyone interested in this line, and hope that somewhere out there, there is the answer to the question "WHO WAS PETER HIGHT AND WHERE DID HE COME FROM?"

I enclosed a photo of my grandparents William Ballard Preston Hight/Hite and his wife Martha Jane Scott, from around 1882, at the time of their marriage.

Thanks,
Martha Hight Anderson

Hights in Wisconsin

I am looking for any information about Joseph and Josiah Hight, who lived in Pepin County, Wisconsin, during the mid 1800s. Joseph married Ann Bignell and Josiah married Martha Rands (who was Ann's mother - don't ask). I am interested in knowing if there are any descendants of Jospeh and Ann and who Josiah's ancestors might be. You can find some background information about them at http://kieransfamilytree.blogspot.com/2007/07/ann-bignell-hi....

Re: Jesse Hight-Hite

This would be our line. My husband's family descends from Henry Hite [Hight}, son of Jesse Hight & Mary Polly Cozad. We have not been able to identify any records after the 1850 census. I recently came across across the 1860 Plymouth, Marshall County Indiana and find a J. Hight, age 60 Farmer b. PA listed with the A.C. Staley family. Has anyone followed this link any further?

I descend from Henry's brother, Thomas. I live in the general area of Marshall and Kosciusko County where the family came in abt 1851. I now work at the local museum in the archives. I recently started working on Henry's descendant line using censuses and obituaries.

My goal is to find Jesse's parents and other families that came with the Hite/Hights to this area from Ohio. There are 3 Hite lines in Marshall County that arrived here about the same time. None of us have been able to connect them.
I'll be happy to share with you.

Karin Hight Rettinger
