I'm helping a friend who was adopted learn more about her biological family. Her birth father was Lotis Hignite, and she was also adopted in Richland Co. OH. He is, I believe, another son of Frank T. Hignite. (Sounds like there might have been a pattern of adopted children from this family!)

Does anyone have any information about Lotis? From the little I've found, it appears his full name was Marvin Lotis Hignite, b. 25 May 1922 in Carter Co., Kentucky and d. 26 Dec 2007 in Franklin Co., Ohio. I've found one website that indicates he married someone named "Nell" and had two daughters. I've found another website that indicated he had never married.

Any info is appreciated.

Coosey Hignite

According to family tradition, I have two Hignite lines in my family tree, but I believe that one of them is not a real Hignite.
My greatgreatgrandmother was Coosey or Kusy Hignite, married to Hiram Gray in Knox County KY. I have found no possible Hignite on the Knox County 1860 census, or on the gedcoms on Rootsweb that could be her. On the 1900 census she is listed as Lucretia, and on the 1910 census she is listed as Lucy. She was 60 in 1900 and 71 in 1910. She and Hiram were married about 1865, and she died about 1920. Although I have been able to find marriage and death records in the Knox County Kentucky records on line for others in the family, I find no record of her, except in the two censuses. Family members of my grandfathers generation, who knew her, said that she was Indian or part Indian. Since she was born about the time of the Cherokee removal, I suspect that her family may have taken the name Hignite to conceal their identity as Indians. There is a gedcom on rootsweb that lists her name as Cooney, but has no other information about her.
Does anybody have any information about her? Were there any Hignite Indians, or any Indians that changed their name to Hignite? I would really like to find out more about her background.

Re: Searching for descendants of William H. Hignite

Hi, Cherri: Thanks for answering my reply. What prompted my query is that I've been researching descendants of my great great grandfather who had two families: One in Union County, Tennessee, and the other in Knox County, Kentucky. William H. "Willie", of course, is a descendant of the Kentucky branch of the family. Basically, I lost contact with Willie's family following the 1930 census of Knox County. From what I can piece together, some of the family moved to Michigan where it appears that Willie's wife, Mary, passed away. However, as I said, I have drawn a blank. I know that Estill passed away in the Los Angeles area last year as did his brother, Walter D. in 1988. An Evelyn Hignite also passed away in the Los Angeles area in 1995, but I don't know how she fits into the family. I have an old photograph of Willie with his mother, step-father, and half siblings that was taken some time around 1902. If you are interested in the Ridenour/Ridner part of your family history, please feel free to contact me directly at jimr@cet.com. I would be most happy to share my information with you. Thanks again.

I'm searching for descendants of William H. Hignite, the son of Mildred Frances "Fannie" Ridner and Robert Hignite. William was born August 1888 in Knox County, KY, and died on 6 Mar 1963 in Bell County, KY. William married Mary Newmans and they had at least four children: Myrtle, Estill F., Walter D., and Maude L. Walter passed away in March 1988 in Pomona, CA; Estill passed away in March 2003 in Rosemead, CA. William's mother, Fannie Ridner, was my great grandfather's half sister. I would like to share information with this family.

Frank T. Hignite

I was wondering if anyone had any information about Frank T. Hignite that was born in Kentucky. He was married three times, once to my grandmother, Leatha Jessie. His daughter was my mother, Edwina Hignite who was adopted by her step-father, Jack Armstrong. It looks to me that she had approx. 16 brothers and sisters from Frank's other marriages. Any information that anyone can give me would be appreciated.

I am in search for a Hignite or Hignight and his ancestry. He had a son named Joe by Dora Couch, in the Kentucky area or surrounding areas somewhere. He was born 27, NOV 1906. I don't believe they were ever married. She married Ike Gibson and gave this son the Gibson name. I do not know anything about this Hignite; Hignight, but I am desperate to find the link/ancestry. My grandfather Paul Gibson, Joe's son, had dark features as if he had Indian in him. If anyone can help me, please email me at: angelmelady@hotmail.com. It would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Tonya
